paime
I work in the oil industry as well albeit in an area (real estate) which allows me to branch off into other industries. I don't mind my job, i get to travel lots throughout Europe and Africa and sometimes Houston, Dubai etc and the pay is far better than i would ever get with a private client firm at this stage in my career. I go by the mantra of work to live rather than live to work. I think the vast majority of people have dreams of working in another industry and actually fully enjoying their job however that's a rare thing to achieve imo. I also reached a point in my life where i could follow music or live in the real world. Pursuing a financially rewarding career in music is extremely difficult and i didn't and still don't have the talent to make it happen. As it stands, whilst i hardly get excited at the prospect of going to work on a Monday morning, i'd much rather earn the money that i do now which pays for my lifestyle than live in a basement somewhere with no money and no luxuries apart from a guitar to keep me sane. Money isn't everything but it's better to cry in a Mercedes than on a bicycle etc etc.
Captain America
I like my job. I don't love 9-5 that much but I do like it more than I would shift work.Working in software development/support I'd like to work for myself in the future ideally which I can see is a real possibility with enough experience etc. The company I currently work for is pretty good not quite Oil Industry money but still very good and lets me live how I'd like to with the possibility to keep doing new roles etc. Also working on an oil/gas related project I see as really good experience and CV fodder for getting jobs with other companies in the future. My main problem with working in software is as you spend all day programming or fixing and debugging boring applications it makes me not want to do it in my spare time. When I'd really like to give developing apps or the like a go. I guess that's more of a motivation thing but I'd really like to do that in the future.I think Paime nailed it though most people just work to live how they'd like to live. Not live to work. That's certainly how I see it. I'd much rather be spending time with family friend, playing video games and playing guitar than programming anything! The Milner
Im an internal sales expeditor now a days, started off here in quality assurance, moved into sales admin, now im responsible for scheduling the packing of all of our orders and a lot of the shipping paperwork. I chase up late suppliers and chase up our manufacturing team when they are late. I can now also do stores work, booking in goods, driving forklifts and what have you.Im bascially the person no one wants to answer their phone too. I'm also the only person in the building who can process an entire order, i can quote it, process the PO, arrange the internal paperwork, pull it from stock, pack it, do the qa and then ship it.So im kinda a big deal, y'know? Petroleum Club is a good one for getting lounge access and such like but you can't beat a bit of Gold member status. People say things like "good morning Mr Watt" when you get on a plane, it's saweet. I've got another 30 flights to take before i reach the dizzy height of Platinum but i reckon i'll get there before the end of February next year.
