its a shame to see local business's close down especially as they employ alot of staff but I cant help think that its been on the cards for a while even though they have a website which hopefully would boost sales I often thought they were over priced and nobody wants to pay more than they have to. Sad days !

I feel for all the staff that have been there for years, even though it's not my preferred shop of choice (prefer rnb) - i used to buy books and stuff from there about 20 years ago when i started playing.

It can't have helped that all of Aberdeens retail seems to be centred at the other end of union street and this must have had a knock on effect over the years, but a sad loss if indeed it does close.

could be difficult to sell the business as a going concern if it isn't making a big enough profit.

R&B would be the logical choice but failing that - Strings Direct - Online Guitar Strings and Accessories

support your local business...... 8-)

Thought someone would say that. I do, I've bought every guitar I've ever owned locally either at R&B or Bruce Millers plus various accessories and countless packs of strings over the years.

But having said that Strings Direct offer a great service and I also use them a lot for bulk buying strings and picks.

I think the problem is not the price of stuff compared to online but more the greater selection availiable online. Was wanting to try out peavey amps recently and went to RnB and BM and neither of them had what i was looking for.

If they did have something and i was happy with it, I would prefer to have tried it and buy it there.

Eugh. It's a real shame that Union Street has turned into any other high street. Maybe something to be said for reduced rental/rates for local businesses a la BMs? But then, why would they when The likes of Hugo Boss and G Star Raw can and probably would pay double whatever it is just now.

It'll be interesting to see if the independent other retail outlet(s) last up that end. Signature is the only one i can think of, but no doubt it will go soon.

I don't think it's the landlord's obligation to reduce rents and the council have to adhere to a fairly strict set of rules when it comes to rates. The small business bonus scheme helps those further down the food chain but unfortunately its the middle guys like BMs which are left stranded.

You must spread....

Damn shame if it's true.

Aberdeen, like every other toon centre, is losing it's identity.

:(

Like many other people, I agree with the sentiment here. I do not want Aberdeen to lose all of it's independant retailers. It seems like Union Street is becoming vacant and every shop is moving to one of the many faceless shopping centres we now have.

Sad that union street is turning into a wasteland.

Interestingly according to this link the musical instrument part is doing fine, just all the other parts aren't. Not surprising really, especially the A/V stuff.

Have they thought of downsizing? And just specialising in musical instruments?

Aye, Old St Nicks centre wis the harbinger of doom aa'right, my dentist got huckled oot o' existence, and George Street's fate was sealed.

Trams, thats what Aberdeen needs, its going well for Edinburgh, no?

I've been prophesying the doom that will be "Planet Tesco" for at least 4 or 5 years...

The internet has a lot to answer for when it comes to places like Bruce Miller's being in trouble, but so does Tesco (/other big supermarkets). How much cheaper are electrical products in the likes of Tesco? Yes, for the most part they will be much shitter, but people buy what they can afford. And one major part of it is perception. People think that everything is cheaper in supermarkets so they just go there. Plus the convenience of being able to buy everything you could possibly need under one roof is obviously killing off local, independent stores as well.

Tesco will own Walmart soon. Fuck, Tesco will own Mars (the planet) soon.

Do whatever the fuck you like (as long as it isn't making light of/ fun of people who've worked hard for countless years trying to save a business losing their jobs).

I hope nobody has that type of vindictive streak in them

Has been a bit of an institution over the years, shame for a lot of the staff; a lot of good people who have been there a long time and know their stuff.

Why do you think that they will turn it into something else. The buyers are likely to keep it open because it has a good reputation and history. It a good retail opportunity. It the buisness that is being sold not the retail unit. It might stay open.

Who told you that?

I was not told that by anyone. Im thinking of it from a buyer's point of view. Its a attractive buisness because it already has a good history and reputation. It just needs to somebody to turn it around. I hope someone buy's it. The people on this thread are thinking of the worst the place is not closing down it just needs to be bought. Think of it from a positive side of view.

It will be sad for the music gear buyers in Aberdeen. Probably as mentioned the use of online shopping to buy gear cheaper most have a knock on effect. Saying that, I have felt differently of BM since I saw them sell a 2nd hand guitar as new. Aye okay it was in mint condition, but it was still 2nd hand and this was not mentioned. I'm not sure of the legal side of that but it still bugged me.

Good guys in there though and have passed many an hour looking round and chatting. Bought quite a few things from there over the years as well.

It will be interesting to see if R&B up their prices even more if BM (the shop) do shutdown. If they do it might be the end of music shops in Aberdeen as people - I feel - will just say enough is enough.

it will be interesting to see if BM do close down how quickly people will start to head there to pick up a bargain or a cut price deal for stock that needs to go. It's the same whenever a shop shuts down here, flies round shit looking for a bargain.
