Last film you watched?

I love the fast and the furious and the second one for no reason other than you can turn your brain off at the door and just sit back and enjoy it. I made the mistake of watching it with a few guys who are obsessed with cars though and it drove me nuts. Paul Walker is a completely lifeless actor but he plays the role well, can't think of a more established actor who could pull it off any better anyway.

I am super excited about number 5. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker AND The - fucking - Rock!!! What more could a girl want?!?

Day off yesterday so watched 3 dvds. I love buying 1p dvds from Amazon.

Anyway...

The Man

Samuel Jackson and Eugene Levy in this so-so comedy about a dental tools salesman who gets mistaken for an arms buyer. A few laughs so will give it a 3/5

Rendition

Jake Gyllenhaal (sp?) stars in this film based upon the extraordinary renditions carried out by the US and the CIA in order to hold (and torture) suspected terrorists in secret prisons all over the world. Reese Witherspoon is the missing man's wife. Bit slow to begin but was alright, and I enjoyed the mini-documentary on the special features about renditions. 3.5/5

The Negotiator

Samuel Jackson and Kevin Spacey star but there's quite a few familiar faces in the supporting cast. Thought this film was great. Basically an experienced Chicago Police negotiator gets involved in a situation involving negotiations when he suspects he's been framed for murder. 5/5

Race With the Devil

Pretty cool 70's film starring Peter Fonda and Warren Oates. 2 couples head for Colorado on a ski trip in an RV and stop off in a remote spot where they witness a Satanic ritual and spend the rest of the movie being pursued by the participants.

8/10

Drum

A charity shop special, bought mainly because Warren Oates is in it and I'm a bit of a fan of his, but also because the film sounded so out of wack. It's set in Louisiana and concerns slave trading and particularly a slave called Drum who is enlisted for Oates' slave stud farm. If you are particularly sensitive to racism then I wouldn't watch this, liberal use of the N word and a no-holds-barred depiction of the attitudes that prevailed when slavery was an accepted thing would likely make your head implode. Yaphet Kotto is in it as well, playing a stud slave called Blaise. Oh and Pam Grier from 'Jackie Brown' is in it a bit. I really couldn't see them making a film like this nowadays.

6/10

Somers Town

Shane Meadows film about a young lad who travels to London from his home in the East Midlands and gets in tow with a Polish lad. They get drunk and try to win the affections of a French waitress. Not his best film but a few humorous bits.

7/10

The kids are alright - first good family drama I've seen in a long time. Was skeptical about Julianne Moore playing a convincing lesbian but she's great. Annette benning flawless as usual. In fact, I'd say the best thing about this film is the casting. You get the feeling the writers didn't really know how to end it but up until the last five mins or so this is a well observed touching film. A good film about lesbians with no scissor scenes, who'da thunk it?

Slim pickings again at Blockbuster, so the weekends filmage comprised....

Wake Wood

Fairly entertaining Hammer production starring Aiden Gillen, Eva Birthistle and Tmothy Spall about a bereaved couple - their daughter was savaged by a dog - who take on a pharmacy and a vet practice in the titular sleepy Irish village. A modern take on the old Monkey's Paw story withy overtones of Pet Semetary. Watchable. 6/10

Savage

Character study and revenge drama about a meek Dublin press photographer, who suffers an unprovoked and brutal attack at the hands of some drunk/stoned neds. The story follows the stages of his physical recovery and the breakdown of his mental state. Thought-provoking, if a bit hollow. 6/10.

* As a footnote : the lead, Darren Healy, assaulted someone in a pub 2 years prior to this movie and the victim died from the results of a brain clot. Healy got a 2-year suspended sentence. Seems a strange choice of role, especially so soon after the tragedy. Perhaps it's some kind of penance?

The Human Centipede

Complete and utter bobbins. Interesting subject matter, filmed with inept "actors", risible dialogue, lame (not very) special effects. Shite. Avoid. 0/10

Splice

Finally talked my "I don't like Sci-Fi" partner into watching this and it was easily the best of the bunch. Adrian Brody and the excellent Sarah Polley play two geneticists, fresh on the back of a successful experiment to create a life form (with the aim of producing valuable livestock proteins), go a step further and introduce human DNA into the equation with spectacular results. Contains one of the most uncomfortable and bizare sex scenes I've ever watched. 8/10

What surprised me most at the weekend was that a fairly gory movie (Splice) with a pretty graphic sex scene got a 15 rating, yet a lame dose of shite (Centipede) was rated 18?

Let Me In - I'm sure everyone knows the story. It's a remake. But, as I haven't seen the original I can't compare. It looks really nice and had a good story to it. The kid actors are pretty decent in it too. Beautifully shot at times. Only bad things would be the suspense building. At times it was done well and it others it wasn't really suspense building but more, just nothing happening. And

they should've kept the whole pedophile thing from the book in and developed the character of the guy that does the killings. I haven't read the book but my gf has. Going to read it soon though.

.

Brilliant kid actors and a rather good story. - 7/10

(I went back to the out of 10 thing instead of stars as I though 4/5 was too much but 3 was too little.

about 10 years ago this was one of my favourite films. I've seen it loads of times.

Completely agree with this. I also finished it feeling a little sad for the father character, I'm not sure if I was meant to.

Also watched Back to The Future 3 after seeing the first 2 last weekend. It's gotta get 10 out of 10. But something kept bugging me and I couldn't enjoy it as much after noticing that

If the Doc in 1955 knew that '85Doc was going to end up in the wild west and die due to the delorean then all McFly had to do was tell '55Doc not to build it, go back to '85 and everything would be right as rain.

I know that doesn't make for a great film but knowing this bugged me. It's like the whole bird thing with LOTR. I still love the films but can't help thinking "Hmm...." all the way through.

Watched this at the cinema back in the day. Just absolutely Godawful.

I'd seen it before too and thought it terrible and way too long apart from 2 lines "why don't you kiss my left nut?" and "I just don't like his asshole face" which I still sometimes use today....and of course Ferrell's cameo because he rarely fails to make me laugh.

Just watched The Prestige for the first time. If I understood it then it was stupid and disappointing. If I've misunderstood it then bravo to the people who made it but that's equally frustrating. WTF?/10

I enjoyed Wedding Crashers. It's a throw-away comedy, but it's inoffensive enough. Ferrell's cameo is superb.

Speaking of which, gave Stranger Than Fiction a rewatch last night., It's a good film, and I really like the premise, but Will Ferrell isn't suited for such a serious film. Found him very unconvincing. Good plot. Schmaltzy ending, but that's actually part of the plot, as it wasn't meant to be a schmaltzy ending.

Also watched Little Miss Sunshine. Seen it before but was definitely worth another watch. Great film. Great characters. Great twist at the end.

Oh, and Sweeney Todd. Man I fucking hate musicals. This is no exception. Too many cockney accents too. Horrid tones.

Antz - looked great, stunning animation, and a stellar cast boasting Sly Stallone, Dan Aykroyd, Woody Allen, Christopher Walken, Gene Hackman, Danny Glover, John Mahoney, J-Lo and Sharon Stone! But as I find so often with Dreamworks movies, it was let down by the script, which lacked almost any funny lines. Of course we learned all the valuable lessons and got our hearts warmed etc. but it's the lack of funnies that leaves Dreamworks chasing after Pixar IMO.

***

Halloween H2O - Jamie Lee Curtis reprises her role from the first two movies in this film which is an addition to the large selection of shitey Halloween sequels. Where to start with steaming turdpile? The fact that at 88 minutes long its way too short? Plot holes like a security guard getting shot MULTIPLE TIMES INCLUDING IN THE HEAD AND BEING DEAD ON THE FLOOR and then turning up at the end saying that the bullet had only grazed him (yet somehow this had caused him to go down like a pile of bricks and be unconscious)? Michelle William's character, a young, attractive blonde girl, surely prime slasher-fodder, driving off to safety and never actually being killed (or even heard of again?). The fact that there isn't one scare in the whole film? Poop. Avoid.

I hope you never see Halloween Resurrection. It's the worst thing ever. You can tell it's bad as it has a rapper as one of the main people. Just terrible. Worse than H20 by miles, and as you said, h20 was turd.

Middle Men (2009) - IMDb

This was a really good film about a bunch of guys who pioneered internet porn and made lots of money with disasterous consequences. Excellent performances from Luke Wilson, Giovanni Ribisi and James Caan. One of those films that you watch and then wonder why nobody's ever heard of it.

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (Video 2010) - IMDb

Four hour documentary about the making of The Nightmare on Elm Street films.

I don't even like the Nightmare on Elm Street films but I'm a sucker for film and music "making of" documentaries and this was ace. Watched in in chunks though, four hours in one go would be a bit excessive.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams: Werner Herzog documentary about the Chauvet Cave Paintings in France. Very good, although maybe not quite as good as I'd expected. It's not as compex or intriguing a film as Grizzly Man. Herzog does a good job of building up the drama of the paintings, which are astonishing, and there are a lot of lingering and atmospheric shots of them. Not surprisingly he tends to focus on the quirkier people who have studied the paintings, which is okay but they could probably have done with a more conventional documentary treatment to give a bit more depth. Still very worth going to see, even though it's only in 2D at the Belmont.
