It's arguable which is correct, for example - American's like to use the singular to describe bands and sports teams also.

e.g.

"Aberdeen is having a great soccer season this year."

"Arcade Fire is rad, dude."

My English teacher at college said that both are technically correct, and it just depends on how you see the entity you are describing. Americans seem to see teams/bands/etc as a singular entity purely by the name, where as we seem to see the band or the team as groups of people, rather than just an individual name.

Does anyone here use the gloves they provide at petrol stations when filling their cars? I don't know anyone that does, but anytime they show someone filling up on the TV, they always wear the gloves. Don't spill petrol on your hands silly billies.

Never. I do use the bucket of sand if I spill a little thought.
