Quick Questions

I have two cups of filter coffee and a an instant coffee in the morning, another filter on the way home and at least 7 or 8 cups of instant or tea throughout the day and evening as well. It's all I drink, I almost never drink water, milk, juice etc. If I'm drinking exclusively caffienated beverages I really wouldn't be that surprised if I had become dependent on it.

That's a terrible habit. You should definitely change that. Caffeine counteracts the hydration of the drink quite a bit. You should drink more water or juice. You could even become prone to kidney stones.

Holy shit dude. I thought I was bad with 4 cups a day. Listen to Dr Jerk.

That's baws.

Caffeine causes the body to excrete more fluid than the drink provides. Moderate use isn't enough to dehydrate, but Lucky's coffee intake seems a fair bit above moderate use. My dad drank nothing but coffee for years. Several cups a day. Never drank water or juice. Got kidney stones, caused by an excessive caffeine intake.

My Dad must've got a shit scare-mongering doctor then. I'm probably still more likely to believe them than a website though.

That was just the first link in the seach results. There was pages of the stuff. It's been fairly common advice in the running mags I read that caffeine doesn't dehydrate (in fact most of them advise drinking coffee before a race as it can aid performance).

Doctors will give advice based on what they're taught. They're just as prone to propagating myths as anyone else.

Anyway here's some science:

Kidney stones can be caused by dehydration but drinking coffee isn't going to cause dehydraton on it's own. In fact doing a quick google suggests that some urologists even recommend drinking coffee to prevent kidney stones:

Still, too much caffeine is bad for you...

Too much caffeine can make you restless, anxious, and irritable. It may also keep you from sleeping well and cause headaches, abnormal heart rhythms, or other problems. If you stop using caffeine, you could get withdrawal symptoms.

Well, um, abnormal heart rhythms sounds, um, lovely.

No it doesn't. It's a total myth. You're still drinking liquid and taking on more than you'll lose through the diuretic effect of the caffeine.

I have heard that, but I've also heard it's bullshit. So who knows what to believe? My piss is usually the colour of lager though, so that would suggest dehydration. This one time I decided to drink shitloads of water and after a couple of weeks of it the massive bags under my eyes disappeared and I didn't look like a raccoon for once.

Seriously, drink more water. Living off coffee and tea exclusively is incredibly bad for you. I'm surprised you're still alive as it is.
