Red Sonia: not the type of film you're going to sit down and properly analyse, so here's my favourite things about it.

  • bunch of blondes with long swords (and longer pins)
  • 60 foot squatting stone Buddha, 30 foot stone bull, and other the massive props
  • Arnie's RAGING cod-piece
  • Arnie's RAGING growl at the kid
  • Everyone's unnecessarily impractical fighting gear
  • Bunch of bad guys wearing jeans (in the middle-ages)
  • Agile mechanical dragon-serpent (in the middle-ages)
  • Brigette Nielsen's outstanding pins - before she turned into a mess.
  • Everyone trying their hardest to see who can act the worst.

Overall I love how Arnie keeps appearing, and risking his life to save an incompetent ginger woman that hates all men!!! Would be brilliant after a few drinks. Utter cheese, but totally watchable. 6/10

I watched 8MM recently and what a great movie...the only thing that let it down was Nic Cage and his ridiculous acting....really do not like him or believe him as an actor...Tom Hanks now there's an actor!

Are you forgetting Con Air?!

OMG his accent was rubbish in that film

Requiem for a Dream - Never seen this before, but have always meant to get round to seeing it at some point. A very good film, if not a little fucked up in places. Felt really sorry for the character, Sarah Goldfarb. Would recommend it if you've not seen it.

Great movie, sad!

Finding Nemo: having recently read that this film made it in to Time Magazine's "100 greatest films of all-time" list (!) and held the record of biggest-selling DVD of all time (!!) I figured it'd be worth checking out.

I used to be called Dory for my short term memory loved Nemo!

Oldboy - Korean revenge flick. Fucking ace fight scenes, lulls a bit in the middle, but then a super fucking sick double-or-triple-twist stuck into you right at the end. Fucking yaldie.

One of my fave's great movie!!

Last night's viewing:

The Devil And Daniel Johnston - Wow. As a documentary it's a brilliant film, and an unbelievable story. Sad in places, funny in others, and just unbeleivable in others. It really shows you the effect a mental illness can have on a person and also those around them, and at the same time it's almost like a Forrest Gump story of a guy who's had this incredible life, blagged his way on to MTV, and worked with the likes of Sonic Youth. Truly a 5-star movie, see it, see it, see it.

Thumbs UP

The Incredible Hulk - The newest one with Ed Norton. Thought it was pretty good, Norton was really good, lots of action and the special effects looked good, but it didn't really have anything in it that we haven't seen before. Baddies smashing up Manhattan? Not only has that been done before but it's been done in Marvel films before, ie Spiderman, Fantastic Four 1 and 2. It was good but not brilliant, just kind of lacking in originality. A lot better than Ang Lee's effort.

Thumbs UP

You're right. Nicholas Cage is terrible. I think he and Travolta are quite good in Face/Off, but other than that, he is garbage. Con Air is a great film, but he's shite. S'all about Malkovich. That guy is unfuckwithable!

4 Months, 3 weeks and 2 days: didn't even read the synopsis for this one (wish I had so it didn't rock my face off!) but watched it because of the critical acclaim it's generated. Pretty brutal - subtly and graphically in parts - and realistic drama that hits home pretty hard. The acting's extraordinary and there's a lot of long single-take shots that heighten the drama drama - similar to Michael Haneke films. More than anything, the film's about the extremes of friendship. A must-see if you like your world cinema, but for others it'd be very much love/hate. 7/10

Momento - been a while since I watched this and was not sorry about re-watching it. Keeps you on your toes, specially since it's backwards and with the guessing "Who dunit", great twists and ending :)

Hangover - has to be said I never thought I would enjoy one as much :) Laughed all the way through, the guy Alan was hilarious - I want a friend like him ha ha

Transformers 2 - OMG dragged and kinda bored me. Think had I been 15 years younger and male and I would have thought it was spot on. Lot's of bits which just seemed unnecessary to a fuck-off long film THEN there was trailer clips.....huh! The fact I had sore knees & freezing (always cold in that cinema) didn't help

Is it that bad?

I like Michael Cera and Jack Black. I thought it could be quite good.

Yeah i thought that too. It has a good cast etc, it just kinda seems to try to hard to be funny.

Kinda got to the point where we were just wanting to leave. Theres some outtakes at the end - I wasnt hanging around to watch them.

The Watchmen. I haven't finished the comic book yet. Apparently, I'm not so into comic books these days... my fault not their's. But the first half that I did read in the comic was amazingly true on the screen. It really didn't feel like 3 hrs either. I proper enjoyed this film!

If I could criticise, the soundtrack was overloaded with 60s classics. i get that flashback is a huge part of the movie, but it really killed the 80s feel.

Jurassic Park Trilogy, Play.com for a tenner. Still good movies, I'd only seen the 3rd one once before and I think I actually enjoyed it more this time. While they all have their daft moments, The Lost World has to take the crown for the sequence near the end where the Tyrannosaur apparently manages to kill everyone on board the ship (the Tyrannosaur can even get at the guy in the wheelhouse, having the ninja style moves to sneak up and get him to the point his hand is still dangling from the controls!) whilst still managing to become shut back in the hold with a dead guys hand on the hatch control preventing it getting out.

The end of the 3rd one with the Pterodactyls flying off into the sunset to the apparent approval of all concerned is pretty dumb as well though given that they tried to eat every fucker earlier.

Also watched 'Vampire's Kiss' again, I still like it and Nicolas Cage, he is no more of an overactor than John Malkovich in 'Con Air', come on!

Jurassic ark 3 seems to get slagged off a lot, when really it's just as ridiculous as the other 2 and is just as good a watch in my opinion.

The scene when Alan Grant is asleep on the plane and a raptor turns to him and says "Alan!" had me in stiches in the cinema. I was the only one there that seemed to think it was funny though...

At last got round to seeing Transformers 2, enjoyed it in the brain turned off sense, big robots bashing the crap out of each other is always fun. However, the American sense of World geography raises it's ugly head again, do any of these guys have a clue!!!! Don't get me started on the nit picking regarding the military aspects as well, lucky the good old US of A is the only country in the world with armed forces to save everyone though apart from 2 Jordanian Blackhawks (overflying Cairo!!!!!). Obviously the issue of Egypt having one of the largest and most modern armed forces in the world these days is conveintantly side stepped and don't even get me started with the military operation in Shanghai, WTF!!!!!!!

Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Wasn't expecting much after hearing mixed things about it, but I really enjoyed it. Probably the best film I've seen with Seth Rogan (well, Superbad was probably better but that was a supporting role.)

The Notorious Bettie Page. Pretty good, but not as good as I thought it would be. 6/10. Not bad, but not great either.

Anvil: The Story Of Anvil

For the uninitiated, Anvil were a metal band from back in the day with a brief bit of success (i'd never heard of them either). Whilst Metallica and the like were making millions, they were not so lucky. Skip ahead a few years and they are still plugging away under the radar playing to half empty bars whilst holding down day jobs. Basically, they go on tour and make an album in attempt to capture the recognition they missed out on.

What a great film. All those people who watched King of Kong after reading this thread, this is your next documentary to watch. It would have been easy to turn this into a Spinal Tap-esque piss take but as hopeless and comical as these guys are, you never get the sense you're laughing at them, even though it is a funny film. Some genuinely decent guys in the band and you begin to feel it's a real shame they didn't make it. Some brilliant moments of honest emotions that tug the heart strings as well as some out and out comedy (the main guy says at one point: "Yeah it went wrong, disasterously wrong... but at least there was a tour for it go wrong on").

I'd be interested in knowing if anyone had actually heard of/listened to the band before this film was made?

Tell No One: French thriller about an innocent guy caught up in a bunch of murders. At over 2 hours long I thought the film would drag a bit but as the story twists and turns its fairly edge-of-your-seat cinema that keeps you watching - the biggest problem was that, by the end, the twist-o-rama gets pretty confusing. Another minor downside is the presence of so many similar-looking women that its all a bit confusing in the middle of the film. The actings superb, given that there are no French heavyweights in the cast and the overall look and feel are very realistic. Ultimately, a very good piece of cinema should go down well with anyone that likes a good film. 8/10

Crank: holy-shit has pretty much won the worst film Ive seen all year title already. Its like someone polled the nuts and zoo readers asking the 100 things youd most like to see in a film, then tried to link them all together, but failed - epically. Someone obviously put Latino Gangsters because our old pal Noel Gugliemi made another appearance as the ultimate typecast! More like watching someone play Grand Theft Auto than a film. Full of: bad product placement, terrible acting, mostly pointless scenes and rubbish stereotypes. Id almost slipped into a coma by the end of it. Less substance than a low-budget porno avoid like the plague. 0.1/10 (only because theres a boob)

The Darjeeling Limited: (with Hotel Chevalier). The fact that theres a pointless short film before the main feature shows how needlessly up-its own arse this one is. Not a big change from any of his previous features with the usual themes, style, casting and characters; so if you like other Wes Anderson films you should love this. The whole film is pretty quirky and contains loads of pretentious symbolism / imagery, as well as the occasional cheesy line. The three brothers play well off each other, and although theyre relatively safely cast its entertaining to watch their spiritual journey. The soundtrack dominated a lot of the film, and was clearly put in to make the it exponentially cooler. The decent strong story saved this one from being another Life Aquatic... 7/10

Gran Torino - Quite good but not amazing, for some reason I expected more. It just kind of fizzled out at the end. Clint Eastwood was good in it though, if it is indeed his last acting role it could have been worse. 8/10.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army - Not bad but felt overlong, probably could have shaved 20 minutes or so off the running time. 7/10.

Martyrs - The weirdest, most f**ked up film I've seen in years. I can't see me wanting to see it again in a hurry, but in terms of the plot development, etc I recommend it, it took several twists and turns along the way and it certainly didn't go where I thought it was going to. 9/10 for originality and sheer gruesomeness.

21 - Kevin Spacey plays a maths professor who rounds up his most gifted students to start a card counting scam in Las Vegas. It's mostly fluff and no filler, the film (and cast) look great but there isn't much of a story to get into, though Kevin Spacey does his best to add some substance with a good turn and pretty much out-acts everyone else in the film without breaking much of a sweat. A couple of plot twists and turns but nothing too dramatic. An enjoyable film if you don't want to have to think too hard. Think Casino meets The O.C.

Thumbs UP

Barbarella - I think I said somewhere else in this thread that so often "sci-fi classics" from the 50s and 60s offer little other than kitsch value. This is a prime example, it is an utter pile of drivel. Other than cutesy costumes and kitsch 60s special effects, the plot was dire, boring and confusing, the acting was beyond wooden and the dialogue so clunky it was almost impossible to follow what was going on. Total and absolute shit. Every copy of this film should be burned. I hate it.

Thumbs DOWN.
