Metal is shit

You misinterpret me, my comment wasn't a direct accusation towards anyone, I was merely commenting upon the general tone of the thread. It's absurd to complain about how a musical genre is or has become shit; rule of thumb dictates that within any genre there is going to be a large percentage of garbage, whether that is subjectively or universally. Best thing to do is block out the shit and listen to the good

I see what you mean.

It is more that the media are trying to portray bands like Bullet for my Valentine, Trivium etc as some kind of metal saviours.

There is nothing exciting like Demanufacture by Fear Factory, Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia by Dimmu, City by Strapping Young Lad, Vulgar by Pantera etc etc You know? Like a classic (perhaps not the best word) for 2007.

Please don't tell me that the recent MH album is it:down:

Totally agree about the Devildriver album, quality piece of work. Also very taken with the new Turisas album. Looking forward to the new Nightwish and Overkill albums next month and Exodus shortly after that.

Got to say as well that I am very impressed by the last albums from Motorhead, Saxon and Maiden, shows they still have a trick or two up their sleeve while still retaining their "sound".

I caught some of the Kerrang Awards while browsing through Freeview channels. I saw the guy from Busted giving a lifetime achievement award to Deftones, "the best f**king band in the f**king world" and I laughed and laughed. I also laughed at Scott Ian's beard and at men in their 30s acting like teenagers. Metal is funny to me. I do like a good riff though.

I agree that Mainstream 'metal' is shit. bands like Lamb of God, Trivium, Atreyu, Bullet for my valentine....etc. etc.

I also agree with the Machine Head comment. IMO all their albums loosley followed certain trends.

There are so many other good heavy bands that don't change to fit in with trends! This month alone there are albums being released by High on Fire, Today is the Day and Down (among others im sure).

If every year had a classic album the term 'classic' would become null and void.

To be honest I found Deathspell Omega's 'Fas -- Ite, Maledicti, In Ignem Aeternum' to be positivly the best metal album I've heard in a very long time, possibly the best metal album in that style since Emperor's 'In the Nightside Eclipse'. I also have high hopes for the new TITD album.

I second the Deathspell Omega recommendation. Possibly better than Kenose. You should download "Mass Grave Aesthetics" if you can, off a comp on Northern Heritage - my personal favourite and fucking ace.

There's always been an interesting lunatic fringe (not referring to DSO here) somewhere in heavy metal. It's a durable, flexible old beast. If you look hard enough you will find.

But aye, Machinehead are/were gash.

no joke, I'd rather go see Enter Shikari than something like Bring Me the Horizon. I don't actually mind "Anything Can Happen In The Next Half Hour". There's far worse out there.

I get the feeling that is like choosing between drowning in shit, or drowning in vomit....

not really a choice...is it?

I can understand why it's easy to dislike enter shikari's music, but there are a lot of comments on here that are utter bullshit in regards to them.

They got where they are through 2 or 3 years of getting in a van and constantly playing shows anywhere and everywhere with a work ethic that I have never seen from another band. And at least they sound entirely different to all these indentikit shit metal bands that everyone is complaining about...

Granted, the above doesn't automatically make them a good band - but is at least a more worthy accolade than playing gigs in kef and the moorings once every few months and then pissing and moaning on a message board about other bands making it big by daring to do something different and working their balls off.

(that was directed at no-one person in particular)

I might add, I don't enjoy them on record, but the live show is pretty spectacular.

I guess alot of people are just pissed because they have exposed themselves to bands who have clearly worked 110% and have given it their all and seemingly got nowhere, where as from an outsiders view you see enter shikari posters / flyers / videos plastered

everywhere without seeing the hard work from the band but from a record label or street teams / groupies / whatever.

p.s Metal has become pretty diabolical, regardless of commercialism.

Indeed, good on them for working hard and getting somewhere. It is not easy.

Just think they have horrible songs etc etc.

"Riders Of The Plague" the new Absence album is pretty good as far as metal is concerned. Also, the new As I Lay Dying album is a cracker, and I know how uncool it is to say you like a 'metalcore' band such as them.

But if all else fails, and if you're bored with all current metal... go back and dig out those classic Testament, Forbidden and Death albums. And if you don't own any of them then, then you should be ashamed of yourselves.

There are far too many OKAY bands and nae enough ACE ones. New release-wise i have yet to be grabbed by anything this year. That includes High on Fire & Down (yes i've heard the new one) whom i am a HUGE fan of. Even the "Back from the Dead" bands such as Obituary, Gorefest are yet to truly excite me by what they have to offer in there new material. It's all paint by numbers, by my tastes anyway.... but i'm clearly too "Elite" for this thread! haha

Metalcore has not & shall not EVER do anything but bore me. But, Classic albums aren't made every year as you say. Be cool to have more than just an okay one now and again though!!

Rediscovering old gems or just plain discovering old gems is where it's at really... Unless you fancy following the New Wave of Thrash of course. SSS, Evile and the well established Municiple Waste are worth checking out. Personally i have been adventuring through Grindcore but have yet to find anything that gives me goose bumps likes Inhale/Exhale does. I'll be sure to let ye know if i find it!!!

I was just thinking about the "death of metal" (well, the period when it was very popular to NADA)...

when the glory days of earache passed and all the excitement and freshness of death metal just evaporated and turned into a pastiche of itself....I remember getting the Korn promo and thinking "WOW....this is amazing" - to see that 5 years (if that) after hearing it..."metal" again ate itself and turned into a dry husk of a copy of a copy.

As someone already said (like any "good" music), you just need to know where to look...it's the faddy stuff that is not "the essence" but some piss poor marketing ploy to "get the dollars in", to which most true "metal" fans can sniff a mile away.

the heady days of "original grind, death, splatter etc" will never be repeated - but that does not mean to say that some new exciting "genre" will emerge and drive a scene.

I look forward to exploring "new" not "recycled" ideas in music. so my advice is, don't just look in one corner of "music world"...

blah.
