"Comedians" that aren't funny

I'd have to disagree there. "Live and Smokin'" is utter crap. He's nervous, unfunny and almost definitely high in a bad way. The rest of his performances are amazing though.

I thought it was funny, as well as pretty groundbreaking for the time. Plus you can get it for less than a fiver. Ah well, can't please em all.

I think you'd probably be nervous if you were the only white person in a club performing to a load of black people...... Poor Richard was the reverse of that.

You're wrong about Bill Hicks, but you're bang on about her. Gina Yashere. Why the fuck is she on TV? She must have a well worn set of kneepads. When she is on Mock The Week they actually do have to add on laughter track after she says something (you can hear the change in the sound). Then they cut to an edit of Dara laughing at something else. She boils my piss.

She wasn't on it last week. I used to love seeing her crack a joke and people feel obliged to laugh.

Bill Hicks makes me sick to my stomach. What a horrible bastard he is, he's just so fucking conceited and - at a stretch - supercilious. Maybe I'm not as bright at all you folk that like him, maybe I just dont get it, but I really despise him and he makes me feel sad; not happy like a comedian should. This upsets me as he was a huge influence on Tool - who are one of my very favourite bands - and I feel like a bit of a "cop-out" for this reason. I agree with him on many points (religion as an example) but I think he sholud have had slightly more respect for other people. Que arty-farty folk: "but he's expressing himself, he speaks the truth man!" Fair enough but shh.

anyway.

Bill Bailey makes me laugh out loud, the Mighty Boosh, Billy Connelly (Connely/Conelly), Lee Evans, Reeves and Mortimer yadayadayada.

Saw Andrew "King of Comedy" Maxwell at The Lemon Tree and thought he was pretty funny as well.

You should have more respect for the dead!

I've a list of folk to check out now, hopefully comedy overload is round the corner. Seen bits of Bill Bailey and think I'll dig that. What's his best stuff?

Bill Bailey, all three of is DVD's are purified genius, but I prefer Part Troll, the newest one.

There's a guy called Russell Howard (I think) on Mock The Week who's pretty shit. The kind of guy who would be the funny one in a group of friends but looks completely outclassed next to Frankie Boyle, Ed Byrne, Dara O'Brien and Hugh Dennis.

and yes, thats bang on.

Frankie Boyle is probably the funniest on TV just now.

when that Secret Policeman's Ball was on ages ago on channel four, there was an amazing comedian, an American woman called Sarah Silverman or Brightman, can't remember, was on. The most un-PC comedian I've ever seen; really appealed to my sense of humour, but may offend just about everyone.

Sarah Silverman is very funny but really close to the bone.

Check out the documentry " the Aristocrats" She is on there along with a whole host of other great comedians like Emo Philips, Steve Wright and George Carlin.

It is an awesome movie.

I've seen the documentary 'the Aristocrats' It's a great watch, really made my laugh. Robin Williams was surprisingly funny on it actually.

I myself came across him around 91/92, back in the good old days when there was no intermeweb and only four telly channels. They showed his set from the Montreal Comedy Festival I think on Channel 4 late at night

This was also my first experience of Hicks (I'm a tender 27), I still rate him as one of the greatest.

but I really despise him and he makes me feel sad; not happy like a comedian should.

This is precisely the effect I imagine he aimed for - the definition of 'challenging'....

Every time I see his smug looking face I just want to take a baseball bat to it.

that's how i feel about hicks. i watched that clip of relentless last night to give him another chance and it's fucking awful. he's just a dick and 80% of his recorded output seems to be him with a mic in his mouth, making annoying sounds. ooh, cutting edge!

I'm a fan of Denis Leary. He plagarises a lot of Hicks' material (or copied it word for word, depending on what account of it you read) but tones it down a wee bit and since he's married with kids he delves into family life as well. Some of his stories about his kids are fantastic. He rants and raves but it's not as aggressive as Hicks - Leary is almost like a cariciture at times.

For me he is a more bearable alternative to Bill Hicks. No doubt that will go down well with the Hicks' brigade, but there you go.

No Cure For Cancer and Lock & Load are recommended Leary offerings.

Andrew Dice Clay is another Yank comedian I find amusing - not just for the x - rated nursery ryhmes. Live in New York is brilliant.

I agree with the earlier point about Al Murray - I used to despise the guy but his stand up show is hilarious and I even like his Saturday night show now.

Don't remember seeing Top Buzzer mentioned here before? That is quality British Comedy. Written by Johhny Vaughan and featuring loads of familiar faces it is a quality alternatibve to "Ideal" with Johnny Vegas. And it's only 4 on Play just now - highly recommended.

Do you like Linkin Park because they're a watered down Deftones? Do you like Busted because they're watered down, family friendly punk? Do you read Maxim because it's watered down porn?

Ah mediocrity. The world loves it so.

Leary's a fucking hack. He sold his soul by ripping off other comics and doing beer adverts for a ticket to the big game (hollywood). Well done, you appeared in Demolition Man. That was really worth losing your credibility for.

The whole point of Hick's material was that it was going to grate with some people while others would love it. He wasn't trying to please everyone, just put across his act the way he thought it should be done. Without compromise. Which is why he was so upset when the Letterman show cut his segment due to their worry about offending sponsors.
