To me, Independence Day is enjoyable cheese. Like Con Air. Indiana Jones was the wrong side of cheesy. It felt like hard work to watch it all the way through, where as Independence Day was joyous.

Speaking of which, watched Con Air the other night too. The bits with Poe running in slow motion to a soundtrack of epic guitar solos is just so righteous. It makes me want to punch the air.

Con Air has Nicolas Cage in it though so good chance it will be awesome (disclaimer:this hasn't applied for most of past ten years). His hair is particularly amazing in it. Need to dig it out, haven't watched it in ages. I did dig out The Rock a while back, its also superb. Have you seen Drive Angry? Now thats a great dumb action film in my book.

Temple of Doom is the worst original Indy film by far. Irritating comedy sidekick and a role for Spielbergs wife, nae great decisions. It does however possess a remarkable amount of casual racism. Maybe stereotyping. Not sure. Maybe both.

Have you blokes seen Cage's version of The Wicker Man? There are a load of compilations of the "best bits," on Youtube, but the whole thing is a gigantic treat from start to finish. Almost none of it makes sense, except Cage's acting. He acts the SHIT out of every little thing. The opening scene is an all-time classic.

 

Did you know there are 12 Cage films on Netflix? Pretty much the only reason I still have a subscription.

The Wicker Man was a hard one for me because I love the original and I think the whole remake clouded any judgement. I do seem to recall an awesome bit with Cage dressed as a bear punching an old woman.Did that happen? I need to try it again.

I watched The Croods last week with my son, its a great film anyway but there was an awesome bit where the character voiced by Cage does a very Cage exclamation, i was pissing myself, my son was like "wtf nothing funny happened..."

Daniel Craig has done 3, Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall. The first is still best imo but Skyfall is pretty close. The second is...ok....certainly infinitely better than a lot of the Moore ones, plot was just a bit hashed i thought. Craig is an aceic Bobd.

I don't want to start ANOTHER Nicholas Cage discussion since I think there's been at least three lengthy ones already, but that is the reason I love Nicholas Cage. He acts the shit out of everything, in every film ever.

To tie that in with trash movies being fun- Face/Off. Utter bunkum but Cage makes it great.

Sinister - Was pretty good. Better than Insidious but wasn't nearly half as scary as it was made out to be.

47 Ronin - Was okay. A bit long. And I was just dying for Keanu to say "I know kung fu".

Disagree. Both leads were great, but it wouldn't have worked without Cage. Put Travolta opposite anyone else in this movie and it would have been total balls.

Monsters University

 

Pretty fun sequel. Well, prequel, actually. I'm not a Pixar fanboy, but they are pretty great at elaborate slapstick comedy. Charlie Day is in it, and he's excellent, though he should have had a bigger part. It's a bit wishy-washy, as its for kids and all that, so it's got a super cutesy ending, and the day is saved, and all that. Worth a watch if you liked the first one.

 

 

Stitches

 

Mindless slasher flick starring comedian Ross Noble as a shitty birthday party clown. He is killed at a birthday party after having his shoes tied together, and then falling on a knife. Years later, he returns to the same house on the same kids birthday to seek revenge. The kids are all teenagers now, so they're all getting wasted and shagging and stuff. For some reason, Stitches is some immortal being, so he turns up, and kills a bunch of these rowdy teens in comedic gorey fashion, whilst the victims attempts of stabbing him in the head are mostly fruitless. Pretty dumb, and the story line is minimal. It's very short too, at 1hr 10 mins, but it's fun for what it is. Might help if you're a fan of Ross Noble.

 

 

Eyeborgs

 

I love a shitty sci-fi picture. This is one. Set in the not too distant future, the government have implemented Eyeborgs all over America, which monitor everywhere at all times, and also have the ability to reprimand criminals, and use necessary force. I.e, they can shoot baddies. But the Eyeborgs system has been infiltrated by terrorists, turning the Eyeborgs against the civilians, with the intention of assassinating the president. You can't argue with a plotline like that. The president is out of the country, so the eyeborgs target the president's nephew and his loved ones. Some purple haired punk kid who plays in a heavy metal band. The eyeborgs kill his girlfriend, and then kill DANNY TREJO, a friend of the presidents nephew who fixes guitars, obviously. Bad Religion are on the soundtrack too. I bought this film for the missus as a joke gift, as we saw it in Morrisons and laughed at how shit it sounded. The joke was on both of us. It turned out to be great.

Pretty pants. 'couple of cheap jumps. But it's pretty poor. More of a comedy. The two blocks get up to some hijinks.

This Is 40

Sort of spin-off from Knocked Up, with Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann playing a couple both hitting 40 while dealing with a troublesome teenage daughter, money worries and parent strife. Some really funny bits, a lot of filler as with most Judd Apatow films. Could have shaved off a half hour. Not bad though.

The Identity Thief

Melissa McCarthy is a white trash con-artist in Florida who steals Jason Bateman's identity and spends all his cash, so he goes to track her down and take her back to confess to his new business partners and save his career. Pretty funny movie, Bateman just does his usual thing and McCarthy remains watchable despite threat of over-exposure.

Alan Partridge:Alpha Papa

As with most TV spin-off films, not as funny as the TV show but still plenty of decent laughs to make it worthwhile. The miming to Roachford scene was amazing.

Only God Forgives

Ryan Gosling owns a Thai gym with his brother, who kills a young prostitute and is in turn killed by the girls father on direction of a corrupt cop. Ryan is urged to seek revenge by his gangster Mum, played by Kirstin Scott Thomas totally against type. A strange movie, slow with minimal plot but it looks ace and I liked it.

The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug

 

Better than Unexpected Journey, but still not good. It's way too fucking long. Fleshing out a book that's 1/3 of the size of any of the 3 LotR novels and making it into 3 films was always a fucking awful idea. It's not TERRIBLE, but it's not good.

Thor: The Dark World

 

Fucking loved this. Partly because I'm a Marvel fanboy and partly because it's awesome. Some good twists, some great action, lots of explosions and shit. Fuck yeah. One of the strongest in the current generation of Marvel stuff IMHO.

Lawless

 

Really, really awesome in places, some terrible pacing and shiteyness in others. Overall, cracking film - well stylised without being obnoxious about it and good performances all around. Spiffing. The ending was a little.. unexpected..? It reached the conclusion that I foresaw right at the start... but it took an odd route in getting there, which I liked.

Elysium - I was hoping this was gonna be better than it was. It just never really got going, and the suit thing Damon puts on seems kinda pointless for what he went through to get it on. Some good bits and the guy from District 9 is good in it, but the rest is pretty much throw away cinema.
