Monster Zero
All my friends like the new Trek film as well but I just think it takes nonsensical to a new uncharted level. Trek has always had plot holes and some general daftness but the amount of them in the Trek film just leaves an old nit picker like me speechless. I have no problem with the concept of a franchise reboot and throwing in a decent cast and some big bucks cgi is all good but I don't even know where to start on the stupid stuff!A couple of examples, how can a cadet who hasn't even qualified from the academy be promoted straight to captain of the flagship of the fleet! (a navy/space Captain is the equivalent of an army Colonel). The hugely convuluted sub plot/action scene to paradrop onto the dangly drilly thing to disable it yet a single well placed phaser shot would destroy it as easily as shown later when blowing the dangly drill on Earth.Where was the protection for earth, not even a single shuttle flew up to stop the big dangly thing even though it was pretty much undefended. How could a massive big mining ship sit in earth orbit and threaten the planet even if it did have access codes to get through the outer defence layers. Somebody surely must have had enough sense to go and shoot it.Why when you are supposedly sneaking through to destroy the earth would you do your drilling right on the door of Starfleet command which is technically meant to be the most heavily defended area, pick Antartica or the desert somewhere. At the beginning one old Starfleet ship puts up a reasonable fight against the big drilling ship and badly damages it when it rams it yet later on 9 more advanced warships get shredded easily without a scratch on the Romulans. However later on the Enterprise destroys an entire missile volley easily fired from the mining ship and there seems to be a complete lack of shielding and no point defence on the Romulan ship so it should have been a sitting target regarldess of being from the future, it wasn't a military vessal.Beaming to a ship in fast warp which at the point of doing was was many light years away, hmmmmmm.Don't get me started on the interior layout of the Enteprise and it's waterworks, brewery, oil refinery, full size airport, branch of KFC and Wallmart. I know they have rescaled it to make it bigger but the come on!I have to get back to work but if I can be bothered might add another dozen or so other parts of the film that hugely annoy me later.Dude, it's fucking Star Trek. I bet you hate the bit in 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' when he goes over the cliff in the life raft as well eh?
Alan Cynic
Assault on precinct 13Missed the start, so didn't recognise the lead actor. thought it was OK, but not as good as the original. And whoever was the lead guy was crap. The BeastRe-watched this last night...always enjoy it. Wonder if it gets many showings on US TV nowadays? Monster Zero
The BeastRe-watched this last night...always enjoy it. Wonder if it gets many showings on US TV nowadays? Is that the one also known as 'The Beast of War'? Is it Jason Patric that is in it and a guy gets squashed under a tank track? If so, good film if I recall.
Alan Cynic
That's the one! Takes the Afghani side in their fight against the Russian invaders (although the mujahadeen are made out as less sympathetic characters than the 'real' people). Yes, it's utter garbage, like most modern remakes - all "attitude" and rappers. The original was a low-budget masterpiece of atmosphere and tension. Great score too.The Beast - great movie if it's one about the tank, not so great if it's the Peter "Jaws" Benchley TV movie about the giant squid. Diesel
Dude, it's fucking Star Trek. I bet you hate the bit in 'Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom' when he goes over the cliff in the life raft as well eh?Yes, granted it IS Star Trek, but some of the stuff in that movie was just plain ludicrous. The scene where Scotty (a legendary character fucking ASSASSINATED by that ginger cunt) goes skittering thru the clear (and seemingly functionless) tube of clear liquid, only to be rescued at a blatantly obvious and ridiculously contrived safety valve, would have been a complete insult to the intellience a pre-school child. No, I'm with The Man of Norse on this one
Norseman
Exactly, another overly contrived scene pointed out by Diesel. I said in my post that Trek can on many occasions be daft but generaly it is in fitting with the episode/film but the new one doesn't stick with it's own internal rules or logic and is just too contrived. Lots of big flash and bash but completely nonsensical and headless. Nowt wrong with Indy and the raft. There is daft and there is the new Trek film. Bigsby
Not seen the new Trek but would just like to point out that there's plenty of crap in the old ones:
Monster Zero
The last 'Star Trek' just stood no chance of competing against such past slices of realism as the Tribbles.George Lucas lost the gritty documentary feel of the original trilogy on the introduction of Jar Jar Binks. Shaki
Youth in Revolt - A bit different than what I expected. Not your average goofball teen comedy. It kind of washed over me. Think I laughed once near the beginning at the line "shit on a dick!" 5/
Chris
InceptionTried to go in with no preconceptions and thought it was fantastic. Great cast, interesting premise and an ending that's still got me thinking through the whole film this morning. Superb from start to finish. girl anachronism
Micmacs Re-watched this last night. Lots of fun and extremely charming, if a little whimsical (even for Jeunet). Some really nice sequences involving intricate machines and contraptions which I really liked.Gainsbourg Went to see this with virtually no expectations yesterday and was absolutely blown away. Some seriously brilliant acting along with some lush scenery and backdrops and and wonderfully surreal. Only slight complaint would be the length, for me, the film seemed to lose pace a bit after the 1960s and was ready for the end credits by the time they came. Was a lot I didn't know about the guy. Norseman
Not seen the new Trek but would just like to point out that there's plenty of crap in the old ones: didn't like that one either but found it easier to watch than the new one. Every Trek film and episode has ample examples of daftness, they just pushed the boat out with the new one.Saw Inception last night as well and really liked it. Monster Zero
Mesrine Part One:Killer Instinct/Part Two: Public Enemy No.1French film about real life gangster Jacques Mesrine, played by Vincent Cassel. Really very good although I think the first part shaded the second a bit. Got this 2 film set for 3.99 in a charity shop. Bargainous.9/10 and 8/10DjangoSpaghetti Western starring Franco Nero (played the general guy in Die Hard 2). Was banned in the UK for years due to a graphic bit of ear cutting that was 30 years ahead of 'Reservoir Dogs'. Bad dubbing as per for these kind of things but ace.9/10A Bullet For the GeneralAnother Spaghetti Western starring Gian Maria Volonte (the bad guy in the first 2 Dollars films) and Klaus Kinski.8/10Shrek Forever AfterWent to see this on Friday with the bairn and missus. Some good laughs but a strange kids film, not really a plot to keep young ones interested. Not sure they should have bothered with a 4th...7/
Monster Zero
The Taking of Pelham 123The newest one, with Denzel Washington and John Travolta. Denzel plays a subway controller who ends up having to deal with a subway train hijack led by John Travolta. Its not too bad, probably not as good as the 70s one with Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw that had the colour coded baddy names idea that Quentin Tarantino nicked for Reservoir Dogs. John Travolta has short hair (he seems to have decided to own up to male pattern baldness), handlebar mussy and a bad-ass neck tattoo and overuses the word motherfucker to show what a mean dude he is. But he says it like I would if I was giving an over-exaggerated impression of a gangsta rapper. He is actually quite a mean dude in this, shooting folk with little prompting and so on but he just overdoes it a little bit in the dialogue stakes. Its directed by Tony Scott so the visuals are by turns pretty cool and also headache inducing, with lots of those momentary freeze-frames that he seems to like that are pretty pointless. It also has a pretty ace sequence where a cop car is zooming through New York and crashes into a taxi quite heftily but just keeps going like it run over a rabbit. Later on it gets twatted by a van side on and goes flying around before falling over a bridge and landing on its roof for good measure. My first thought was that the 2 poor cops driving the car were a bit unfortunate to have been killed in this fashion but its OK, they get pulled out, a bit bloodied but otherwise looking in pretty good shape. Im fairly certain they would have been dead. So believable plot development is not this films strong point. John Turturro also pops up in a role that pretty much anyone could play; Im actually getting a bit sad he isnt as good nowadays. Tony Soprano plays the mayor but isnt really in it that much.7/
delboy
Sex and Drugs And Rock n Roll - felt it was a bit disjointed and didnt really tell the whole story of Ian Dury but Andy Serkis was superb in the lead role and a very good cast of well-known support actors. And the music was naturally cracking.Edge Of Darkness - was never gonna be as good as the TV series and they had to miss a fair bit out to condense the six hour series into a 2 hour film but Mel Gibson was on top form. Script was a bit slow in places and it was obviously made for Audiences but still more than watchable. And the great Ray Winstone was superb in both. Also poor bugger dies in both but he probably dies in nine out of ten films he's in!
Alan Cynic
Sorry to say this Del.....I 'm not a Ray Winstone fan....puts me off watching the films.

It's still excellent, despite the rock bottom production values.****Titanic 2 - Who's dumb idea was this? Terrible acting and CGI so bad it looked like a cartoon. Even the fucking boat is CGI. Bigsby
Date Night. Steve Carrell and Tina Fey as a couple of parents who try to put some romance into their life by going out on a hot date. Starts off as a fairly typical romantic comedy but takes an abrupt left turn into comedy thriller territory, in the vein of, say, Beverly Hills Cop or Midnight Run. They don't seem to make those kind of films anymore, but this works really well. Great supporting cast too with the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Mark Wahlberg, Leon out of Curb Your Enthusiasm and that guy that's been in loads of stuff lately like Prison Break and Entourage.Great, fun film, 4/
Lemonade
Hah, I saw that while flicking through the programme guide. Nothing could tempt me to actually watch it though! I'm suprised that you seem surprised how bad it was.I didn't watch all of it, it was just so, so bad. Even the bit when the iceberg hit the ship was completely devoid of any excitement or suspense. The actors looked like cheap-priced porn stars. The CGI boat was so bad that even when they cut to a long shot of the outside of the boat, the waves were moving up and down but boat was sitting perfectly still, not bobbing or anything. In the middle of a fucking tsunami.
