Guest Tam o' Shantie
giles is right. 5 year old spelling, joey from friends and scottish nationalism aside, anybody else got anything to contribute other than the odd backpacker album or the 99% white roster of def jux?how about some of your favourite rare hip hop singles of days gone by?One that I have loved since I heard it is 'MCs Ain't Sayin' Nothin'' by Staten Island one-hit wonder Perverted Rhyme Throwwa. YouTube - Perverted Rym Throwwa - Mcees Ain't Sayin' Nuthin'It's actually quite a melodic and innocent track, considering that it would have been marketed at the height of fellow 'shaolin' inhabitants the wu-tang clan's underground success, and the artwork makes it look like the work of some part time murderous street thug, part time murderous MC. Aside from the fact that it is a nice track though, is the astonishing rarity of it...I don't think I've ever seen a copy for sale, and old ads or forum posts that had it for sale were asking near enough 100 for their copy.Another underground but slightly better known track, from Hi-Tech who did a couple of singles before disappearing as far as I know. This is a pretty laid back but hard hitting cut intersperced with some weird eerie, fuzzy spaced out bars.YouTube - Hi-Tech - 24/7I am really not big into the West Coast sound in general, but it's the really ugly, creepy underground NY stuff that really grabs me. Aside from endlessly catching up on the unfamiliar cream of the last 30 years of hip hop, I spend most of my time looking for these one offs & unheard slabs o' wax. Murrr
I'm all about Elzhi's "The Preface" album at the moment (he used to be in Slum Village, who I've not yet listened to). Plenty of snare and bass in Black Milk's production - the beats are lively and upbeat without getting boring, and Elzhi's a skilled lyricist with a tight flow that's deceptively aggressive at times. Also, new Ghostface tracks. This one I really like; there's some classic Ghostface storytelling going on and the beat's real nice. It tails-off a little when Fabolous shows up (not a fan at all), but it's pretty decent all-round.YouTube - Ghostface Killah ft. Fabolous & Shareefa - Guest House [CD Q]This one, however, sounds fucking terrible. I don't know what he was thinking...YouTube - Ghostface Killah - Baby
Spoonie
I love rap and have done for years. Not gonna sit and type up a tonne of recommendations because i'm too tired and a lot of the good stuff has been covered, but a UK album I strongly recommend would be 'Council estate of mind' by Skinnyman. He's from Finsbury in London and if you prefer the lyricists lounge approach to rap rather than the stories of urban decay and struggle then this won't be for you but I absolutely love it. Some great wordplay, cracking choices of sample and just a solid album start to finish. One of my all time favourite albums regardless of genre. Woodsinho
Been listening to Chemical Warfare from Alchemist a fair bit lately. Lemonade
For some reason I was listening to 50 Cent this morning. Why, when he is rapping, does he sound like he has a cock in his mouth? (Apart from the obvious answer of course). He sounds like he has a speech impediment or something. Some of his rhymes are almost undecipherable.
