i dont think most people would class them as hip hop but give it a go.

That's a really odd statement, no offence, also Porn Theatre Ushers and Smut Peddlers disbanded nearly ten years ago.

This is utterly the wrong forum for any hip hop chat, i'm glad no grime was posted.

Roll on the "recommend me some dubstep thread" where everyone posts vicious brostep and then someone posts a Digital Mystikz tune with a "i don't know if this can be classed as dubstep" type comment.

Happy times.

I don't know, some people seem to have a funny idea of what hip hop is. I've heard them referred to as "dirty rap, that's not hip hop".

I would say they're hip hop bit so many people I've mentioned them to don't.

I'm aware they are no longer around but they're music is still good.

It hasn't been that bad a set of recommendations, has it? I mean, it is mostly "alternative hip-hop" and it is mostly canon picks, but there is enough of a selection for someone just beginning to explore the genre. Canon classics are probably what he's looking for.

I don't think I really get many of your posts. Sorry.

Are you disapproving of people's recommendations for someone who knows nothing about hip hop? Or are you poking fun at the general direction many 'recommendation' threads go? i.e. needless interpretation of the minutia of genre.

Just wondering. I mean, I quite like recommending music to people (not that I have in this thread). It's a nice feeling when they go away, listen and really enjoy it and as the guy above said, it's been alright for someone new to hip hop.

Nah, he's just trying to make it very clear that he is substantially superior to anyone who has recommended any music to anyone else ever. Because he knows what's what.

Jeez, Giles, you don't half like lording it over us peasants do you?

I haven't had a chance to sit down with my laptop and search out all these recommendations, but I'll tell you something, it's going to take me a while to explore them all, and I'm delighted with the responses so far - it's exactly what I was looking for, and exactly the purpose I posted the thread.

Your post was exactly the opposite of the reason I posted this thread.

Stop being a knob.

You should have learned by now that Giles uses this forum exclusively to lord it over us peasants.

I've been on a bit of an American hip hop binge recently, figure i might as well share.

Earl Sweatshirt - EARL

The Rangers - Go Hard

Turf Talk ft E40 - I Got Chips

Tom should weigh in here as well, some of the beatsy stuff he has been listening to lately would appeal to fans of dilla.

Although i personally think that most people who say they like Jaydee, just prefer agreeing with Pitchfork/Wire/common opinion rather than making their own minds up.

Also Ricochet should get some Grime links up, i'll start for him.

ha ha nice 1 giles, if u dnt lyk dis deres no point in u tryin 2 listen 2 ne grime!

The Streets (what genre is the Streets? Doesn't feel right calling them hip hop)

I bought Original Pirate Material on a whim on Friday, it's 3 in the HMV sale, and I'm glad I did. Doesn't really matter what genre you want to put it under, it's really good. Same thing as with Boy In Da Corner by Dizzee Rascal

Not hugely into this type of music if I'm honest, but have liked Public Enemy ever since I saw them live a while back, and I can handle a bit of Snoop Dogg these days.

It's what the Internet was invented for, no?

This thread has been grand, I ken eff-all about Hip Hop.

Pretty much everything I'd recommend has been mentioned before;

GZA - Liquid Swords

Wu Tang Clan - 36 Chambers

Dr Octogon - Dr Octogon

Public Enemy - Fear Of A Black Planet

Ultramagnetic MC's - Critical Breakdown

Gang Starr - Step Into The Arena

Brand New Heavies - Heavy Rhyme Experience

I'm a pretty big soul/funk fan, if you're interested in hip hop I'd suggest digging a bit deeper and checking out:

Eugene McDaniels - Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse

The Impressions - Young Mods Forgotten Story

Bo Diddley - Black Gladiator

Ronnie Foster - Two Headed Freap

The Politicians - Psycha-Soula-Funkadelic

Funkadelic - Maggot Brain

VA - Shaolin Soul (Collection of tracks sampled by the Wu Tang Clan)

I love all of those above and think, to a greater or lesser extent, they've all been part of the foundations the hip hop I enjoy have been built on.

You might also find something of interest on my blog - The North East Beast - but it's mostly garage/psych rather than soul/funk/jazz.

So far I've not had the time to get into the depths of this thread, but I will.

I just went mental one day and bought Three Feet High And Rising - it's nae bad. Been listening in my car on the drive to and from work quite a lot, and some of the tunes are pretty good.

I also listened to Straight Outta Compton on Spotify the other day - that's good, I like that sort of shit. I listened to 2Pac a lot when I was about 18 (just his Greatest Hits, but I mean, I listened to it everyday for about a year), and love it. The NWA stuff sounds kind of similar.

I was going to post this in the new albums thread, then I thought that the board could do with a thread for hip-hop discussion, new and old.

After years of record label problems and legal wrangling Saigon's "The Greatest Story Never Told" is finally being released.

And it's great!

YouTube - Saigon - The Invitation (Feat. Q-Tip & Fatman Scoop) (The Greatest Story Never Told Album) 2011

YouTube - Saigon - Bring Me Down Pt. 2 [Official Full Version]

And just to get the thread off to a strong start, I might as well repost the absolutely awesome new Tyler the Creator track.

I've listened to that on repeat for about half an hour yesterday.
