He died of a heroin OD, while shooting up with the drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, which is why the drummer got sacked. Jonathan Melvoin had two twin sisters - Wendy Melvoin, who was Prince's guitarist (the one in the Kiss video), and Susannah Melvoin who Prince was engaged to, and he wrote 'Nothing Compares 2 U' for her.
