Villa did have a couple of smashing touches today. I still think Spain don't need to play the 4-2-3-1 with both busquets and alonso. The way they can control possession means they really don't need those two defensive players in there.

Despite the media saying they wouldn't go over the top, they already are. England were sensational and Spain were dreadful. Fat Frank is keeping things in perspective though.

"We're very pleased. It's great to beat them now - they are the best team in the world. We won't get carried away over the fact we beat them. Let's be realistic, they dominated the game. Our back four, with Scott Parker in front, were brilliant. We won't be shouting from the rooftops. We have game on Tuesday [sweden] and the reverse may happen."

Got my tickets for Culter Vs Partick.

I used to write about the juniors for the Press & Journal and the Hunday, erm, I mean the Sunday Mail; and I always loved going to wee Crombie Park to cover Culter games. Bobby Gray was the manager and he was a top bloke - always made himself available for pre and post-match interviews, and always invited me into the boardroom for a whisky with him and the committees of both clubs before the game. His interviews were great and he really knew his stuff about that level of football and what was required from a player to excel at that level (aggression, the ability to win the ball in the air, and a Highland League level first touch). His sides were constantly littered with ex-Highland League players and they had this striker called Roddy Cameron who, for me, was the best player in the North East Junior League for two years (along with a fantastic midfielder at Turriff United called Dave McKenzie). Genuinely two-footed, pacey, and highly aggressive. He was brilliant in the air, too. I always felt he could have played league football, but I think he liked socialising a little too much to apply himself to the extent required to play part-time league football and hold down a full-time job simultaneously. I'm so happy Culter have got this tie.

Glentanar were also a club who were welcoming - they once took me and the Evening Express junior correspondent down to a Scottish Cup tie against against Neilston Juniors, who had Barry Lavety amongst their ranks. He was as fat as Jo fucking Brand. They plied us with booze on the team bus on the way home. Great bunch of lads.

Cool fucking story, bro.

I just love how relentlessly, unswervingly stupid OF fans are. They'll just never learn, and frankly I hope they don't. Seeing their clubs being shat on by UEFA is one of the few joys I get from football these days.

Also got to love Peter Lawwell. He was doing well for a start....."It's an embarrassment to the club"....."We don't want it, we don't need it".....and admitting that "We were inundated by complaints from our own fans".....etc etc.

....but then reverts to type with "we have the best supporters in the world and hold that reputation dear". Epic facepalm.

Oh, and erm...reputation? A "reputation" is an opinion held by the community at large, not by yourselves as a club you inwardly- looking fuckwit. Celtic's reputation outside of Glasgow is in the fucking toilet and has been for a hundred years.

Fucking disgusted by this (the story, not your post).

Why some Celtic fans think it's okay to chant that shit I'll never know. I haven't been this season, and have only been a few times in recent years, but it was quite rare to hear sectarian chanting at Celtic Park recently - it was always the away games where the fans were letting the club down.

I hope they get chucked out of Europe, and it might teach them a lesson. They will just get a measly little fine though. After Rangers' third offence to be punished, they've got a pretty small fine in relative terms and have to play one away match with no fans. So, Celtic's punishment will just be a fine I would imagine, unless the CONSPIRACY spreads across Europe and Rangers are getting favourable treatment by UEFA...

Agreed.

Culter are a great wee club. One of their former players used to work for me and he arranged a few pre-season friendlies over the years with who ever I was playing for at the time. They were really tough to play against and it was good for my guys to experience that standard of football. We were always made very welcome at Crombie Park.

I might try and make that match.

Scotland under 21s beat the Dutch 2-1 in their own back garden:

Experts in youth coaching systems eh? Up yer orange arses. Mark Wotte was obviously the linchpin and he's ours now. £10 on us being reigning World and European Champions come 2018. The future's bright...

Good article, though it is pretty much a long winded way of wording Y No Wingers?

Pedro was injured, but both Jesus Navas and Santi Cazorla are both very good in the wide positions. I imagine it could be a case of having so many good central midfielders and the need to utilise them all, even if they are not playing to their strengths. Alot like England did for years. When there's Xavi Alonso, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas and David Silva all available, it's difficult to leave 2 or 3 of those out for the sake of an unglamerous name like Navas or Cazorla.

I said before that they don't need to play Alonso and Busquets in the same team. The article talks about Silva and Iniesta both coming in from the wide positions and causing the team to be too narrow. However Iniesta should really be playing in one of the midfield three as he usually does with Barcelona. And Llorente should play up front.

True. Iniesta is a bit like Rooney when he plays on the left. Both can do an alright job, but it's not playing them to their strengths, nor do they properly operate like wingers anyway.

I can't stand Sergio Biscuits. He's a right knob. I'd rather see Alonso in there. He's a good man, apart from the Liverpool thing. Javi Martinez is solid too. He should get given a go.

Busquets is a knob but a fantastic player. He's really developed a lot over the last two years. I thought he was one of Spain's top 3 players at the world cup. Alonso is great too but I think I'd favour Busquets to play alongside Xavi and Iniesta purely because they know each other so well.

I also wonder whether a change in coach after the world cup would have been a good idea. France changed coaches between winning the 98 and 2000 tournaments and Spain did too after winning Euro 08. I think someone new who would want to prove themselves would help maintain levels of motivation and prevent the side being too complacent. It might just be friendlies they're losing but I think there's some truth to the cliche that winning is a habit and it might be tough for them to suddenly turn it back on when it comes to next summer.
