What is terrible at my work is that it's flexi-time, but if you come in at 9am everyone makes terrible jokes (did you get the evening paper? Whatever that means). So, on Friday, to avoid this inane bullshit and the Banchory-Aberdeen traffic, I came in for 730. "How do you like that?" I thought as my tormentors arrived 30-45 minutes later, but the joke just turned into "Oh, he's obviously trying to get a pay rise or a promotion! Hey Moose, you fishing for a pay rise?!? guffaw." Then, when I went to leave at 4pm, it was: "half day today Moose?! guffaw."

I do like the people I work with though, they're just old and have rubbish senses of humour.

For the last few months I've been reliably trundling in to work between 9.30 and 9.45. So far this week I've had an 8.30 and an 8.45 start. People won't let it lie.

My boss doesn't give a hoot really, in fact he made me leave at 3 one day because it was a nice day. Its all the contractors around me, them and their precious day rates. Yes, you have to work an hour more than me every day, but you probably get paid about 7 times what I get! To be honest, it's all "teh banter", they're just not gifted with good comedy like me. They aren't maliciously unsettling me, their chat just stinks.

You are probably right, overall.

Temping with the local government should be avoided, which is what I've done for years both up here and back home, barring the 6 month position. The recruitment policies are relentlessly strict, and a temp can't just be made permanent because he's good at the job. A post has to be created, and that has to be approved by a hoard of different committees, and then it has to be advertised to the public. Then again, I know of folk who have temped in the oil industry and have been made permanent in less than than a month, so temping is good if you go to the right place, and you're not just covering someones long term sick or maternity leave.

Spot on. I have temped in both the public and private sectors. I would personally recommend that nobody commits to a temporary contract at any public body. The public body and the employment agency will absolutely take advantage of the situation, and generally treat you like a commodity. My experience of temping in the public sector, however, is very positive. I was made permanent after about 6 weeks in a previous role in Aberdeen, and as a result managed to learn new skills and gain new experience, but sadly the company was liquidated in 2009. I fucking loved that job. I'd say temping in the private sector in Aberdeen can be very rewarding, and unquestionably something I'm looking to return to. The job market in Aberdeen is still surprisingly healthy compared to almost anywhere else in Scotland, I'd suggest.
