Last film you watched?

It was for a mate's 30th. Think there was about 20 people there and it cost around 130 to get screen 3 for 2 hours. You just take the DVD of the film you want to watch along and they show it on the screen. It's a pretty cool idea for a special occasion if the person in question has a stand out favourite film.

That's a fantastic idea.

*makes mental note to do that for my birthday next year...

Much as I enjoyed In The Loop, I really love his more surreal stuff like Time Trumpet or the short-lived Armando Ianucci show.

Re-watched the Armando Ianucci show not too long ago. Still amazing. I had forgotten all about the old guy going on about how the internet used to be in black and white and how 'we didn't have sushi in my day, our mum used to make it out of corned beef' ... comedy classic.

As for the Belmont, what a great idea. Definitely gonna do it at some point. I'd probably rent it out for an Ernest retrospective. Ernest goes to camp would of course be the highlight.

Wirelessly posted (SonyEricssonK770i/R8BC Browser/NetFront/3.3 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)

I've talked about this in another thread. For my 30th in January i'm going to get all my mates in the Belmont to watch Animal House, and then back to mine for a toga party. Toga! Toga! Toga! Toga!

Can you bring your own drink into the cinema for this?

That would definitely be the clincher for me!

Airheads.

Hadn't seen it in fucking year, used to love it when I was younger, it somewhat got me interested in "the alternative" scene.

"Who would win in a fight, Lemmy or God?"

"God."

"No, wrong answer"

"Lemmy."

"No, it's a trick question, Lemmy is God."

Genius movie. I'm going to have to dig it out and watch it now. Unbelieveable they got Fraser, Buscemi and Sandler all in the one movie fairly early into their careers.

Gomorra: Italian crime film that half follows a young chav, tailor, businessman, two youths and mid-level gangster who are all vaguely linked by the war (between rival wannabe mafioso gangs). Sounded good, but it wasnt the case. Spent the latter half of the film contemplating whether or not to turn it off, and trying to figure when it would all come together which it never really did. Totally underwhelming considering how epic the trailer made it look! Score: 3/10

I think that's why it's so good, as back then they were all coming into their best.

Watched Shaft last night, fucking awesome film. He's not just black, he's black with an attitude.

Traitor - an interesting post-9/11 thriller about terrorists planning a major bombing campaign in the US, starring the always-reliable Don Cheadle and Guy Pearce. Pretty damn good, with a great twist ending. 8/10

Donkey Punch - Started watching it the other night on Fillum 4, but couldn't get into it. I can't identify with the Ecstasy and "'avin' it large" culture and the characters were so unappealing. Even the spectacular porn-bod on the lass with the short dark hair couldn't compel me to watch more than 45 mins of the movie. no rating.

Watched Richard Linklater's Slacker the other night. I had never seen it before but knew fully what to expect after seeing all his later films. There's not much of a 'story', the film just meanders in and out of various conversations and situations. Really enjoyable in parts and eventhough some of the pontificating and generallly pretentious intellectual conversations are a bit annoying at times, it is still a great film. Think a live action version of that animal welfare thread and you're not far off.

We went to see Funny People today. It was fairly enjoyable, but very rarely laugh out loud funny. Adam Sandler is one of my least favourite comedy actors, but I like the supporting cast. Some very cringeworthy product placement, involving Apple and Myspace. Urgh. Also, a ridiculous amount of pointless cameos. There's one scene where Adam Sandler is receiving advice from Eminem (?!) and Eminem gets pissed off because Ray Romano of Everybody Loves Raymond is eye balling him. Eminems anger towards Ray did lead to a fairly amusing "I thought everybody loved you" gag, which was probably my favourite joke of the whole film.

Not as good as the last Seth Rogen film I saw, which was Observe and Report. That was pretty decent. But it was better than Pineapple Express, which was toilet.

The Other Boleyn Girl - An entirely fictional but also entirely enjoyable biopic of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII. Don't watch it expecting a history lesson, but if bodice-rippers with lots of treachery and a spot of incest is your thing, you'll enjoy this. Natalie Portman is great in the baddie role. The girl can really act, she's almost entirely unlikable, but in a good way.

****

Robocop - Haven't seen this since I was a kid, and just bought if for nostalgic reasons really, but there's a lot more to this than the blood and bullets-fest I remembered. It's a real satire of the excess of 80s America, and is set in a future where the corporations and more importantly, the yuppies now control everything, including the military, the police, and the hospitals. Also the Cold War has escalated, and world appears to live permanently on the brink of nuclear war as every country appears to now have nukes - and watch out for a nod towards Reagan's "star wars" program. In addition to all this, the action is fucking great, there's buckets of blood, and the Robocop suit still look a sci-fi nerd's wet dream, even 20 years on. A masterpiece.
