I don't think I will stop being a "smart-arse twat", so here is my list of favourite sub-divisions of the broader song format:

Ode: John Keats "Ode to Melancholy"

Folk Ballad: Bonny Udny (unknown author), although A Man's a Man For A' That is the greatest of the Scottish traditional songs

Canticle: ironically, my choice for this was released as a pop record! Scarborough Fair by Simon & Garfunkel

Sonnet: the aforementioned NO.65 by Shakespeare

Like a few others here, mine changes regularly, but a good test is if I do them live, so these are high in my chart..

Lal Waterson 'So strange is man'

Nick Drake 'Black eyed dog'

Brecht/Weill 'September song'

Bridget St John 'Ask me no questions'

Ivor Cutler 'Beautiful Cosmos'

However right at the moment I'm torn between these two....

Donovan 'Lord of the Reedy River'

and ANY version of 'Black is the colour' (Espers, Famous Jug Band, Robin Williamson, Lammas, etc). I still need to hear the Patty Waters and Paul Weller versions, though!!!
