  1. Do you know if it will be more of a venue venue or somewhere like the Globe which will have local covers bands etc playing?
  2. Yes to all in bold. See below for coming up with bad band names. I liked the name Archives before that year where every single band name was pluralised. A Guy Called Guy was bad. It was worse telling people who asked what your band was called. Embarrasment of the highest order. Carson Wells is maybe not great, but it doesn't make me cringe and it doesn't make people pity you.
  3. This is embarrassing, but there was a point in Dream Theater's career when they were kind of in limbo between really gay prog rock and a pathetic attempt at trying to go heavier or something. Anyway, the album Metropolis part II: blah blah blah is really good. The vocals are super cringey at times, but some of the guitar and drum work is really really cool. As good a guiarist as the boy is I think Portnoy did a lot for that band, can't see the fans liking the new stuff as much without him. I think he wrote a lot of the lyrics as well. Oh dear.
  4. Cheers pal. I really like some of Toby's stuff, but some of it I don't like as much. Either way, probably the most charming man alive. HYHI are pretty cool. I'm digging it.
  5. So true. The 'hit' Iron Galaxy is fantastic. Cann Ox is dark though, very El-P sounding beats. Vast Aire's verse is so good. If you dig the dark stuff you can dig out El-P's solo stuff. The rapping/lyrics isn't anywhere as good, but some of the beats are insane - DeLorian feat. Aesop Rock is great. If you like crazy metaphors that you prolly won't get and sick flow Aesop Rock is your man. None Shall Pass is a really good album, probably most accessible, but Labor Days is pretty much one of the defining Underground Hip Hop records of the noughties. Gonna delve into this. I've listened to to the non-prophets album, but wasn't that big on it. Prefer Sage's solo stuff. That song 'Crack Pipes' is great. Crucial! Nobody seems to recommend Slug or Atmosphere - but I think this is really good. Bluesy, white boy rap. Slug Live the second song at 3:15 is better, but they are both good Living Legends feat. Slug. I've been listening to some grime recently and I dig this. Basically rapping over commercial dubstep: P-Money - Slang Like This (Prod by Sukh Knight)
  6. I'd agree with you here. I reckon the chilled out melody over the super heavy bass driven part is a really nice contrast. Not so big on the second one.
  7. Yeah I have heard good things about them and because they are all solid state you can avoid all the inherent problems/risks that come with tubes. They compete easily with the sound/tone of a tube bass amp too. Good amps. The only problem is the expense though. I know Guitar Guitar in Glasgow has them, definitely worth a trip down to try em!
  8. Not really. But hopefully some more gigs with Scottish based bands will happen in there (keep costs down - no guarantees). I caught the last three Pensioner songs. They were great. Like, Epic is a banger. I'm siding with the people who like more vocals as opposed to the instrumentals. Mondegreen had their moments for sure - there were some really cool 'jagged yet driving' parts. Min Diesel looked great, as did their CD.
  9. Yeah. It's all in room 2, so you use that kit and can mix and match the cabs as you fancy i think.
  10. It is a lovely guitar. Agreed about the listing. I always thought he was using a Japanese tele. Would have thought he would have upgraded by now. Obviously sounds good. I'm currently winning. HA. What does it sound like? Has it got quite a nippy high end?

    Amp Repair

Too true. 45 quid for the best part of 2 - 2 and a half hours work on my Mesa.
  12. This was good. Best gig I've been to in a ages. Good turnout too. Wads of new faces. Tunnels didn't feel empty for once. Dross were pretty good and will definitely get better over time. Tight for a first gig too. I forgot how much I enjoy watching Jan make love to his guitar. Manatees were excellent. LOUD, but not too loud. Awesome dynamics, vocals and they were super tight. Sound was great too - especially the drums. That big fuck off ride cymbal sounded amazing. Enjoyed Taint, both the older and the newer stuff. A lot of 'classic rock' in there, which I generally hate, but they definitely kept it interesting. There was a stinking rotten solo at one point, but then they absolutely pummeled into the next riff, which was probably their heaviest. Was totally made by the shift. Good song writing.
  13. Snafu has been in and out of liquidation countless times recently. It's ridiculous. Keeps me in a job though! I just heard about the Exo incedent at work as it's a friend of a friend of a friend type thing. Sounds savage. They don't seem to be giving much away.
  14. Ohhhhh! I just facebooked about this. Well done on getting this. Away to listen to HYH now. Toby is theeeee boy.
  15. Is that the bass DI pedal? If so that is a proper steal!

I think the fact that Dennis lets you come into his workshop and watch him work speaks volumes for the confidence he has in his ability. It also give you a good idea of what you are gettiung charged for. The local shops will charge you the same for a lesser job, and you'll probably end up having to go to him anyway.
  17. Yep heard about this too. The world of Facebook has said that they were getting noise complaints from Riley's and they couldn't afford to refurb to sort it. But that's Facebook. If it is the case it's strange that this has only happened recently. They seemed to be gaining quite a bit of popularity in the club nights and the number of gigs going on seemed to have picked up again.

Dennis Marshall is the best you'll get. Stays down in Dunfermline, but well worth the jaunt. I'd imagine the parts for the repair won't cost a lot in this case (unless you need new valves), it'll all be labour costs.
  19. Not my thing at all but they're well recorded, tight, the songs seem to flow well and there are quite few different ideas throughout. This is in no way meant to cause offence, but I'm sure the kind of people who watch/buy Kerrang will be into this. Did Dan record this? How were the guitars recorded? I know he likes his POD, just wondering whether he would have mic'd stuff up aince I remember you saying you have decent gear.
  20. I went and listened to a lot of SL's album today. Those songs sure sick in your head. After seeing them live once I seemed to know them all. Some sweet choruses there too. Probably won't be in the country, but if i am I will be there, singing a lot.
