Soda Jerk
I think you should take your Napoli goggles off for a second there. Its well known they are dodgy defensively and last night even tho Chelsea barely looked bothered they still caused them issues. They will cause them more problems at SB id imagine.Outside of the top 4 in Serie A, their goal difference and goals conceded is nothing too concerning. they've only conceded 3 more goals than AC Milan who are top. It's not a top drawer defence, but I wouldn't say it's suspect either. They concede a few, probably due to how they play, and how they shift to a back 3 when they bomb forward. They keep the ball well and score loads of goals, so they're probably not too concerned.
soundian
Because that's their name in German anglicised whereas Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli is in Italian and when converted to English doesn't translate to Naples. Why should we call them Naples if the Italians don't...Eh?The city we call Naples is called Napoli by the Italians. How is that different? Soda Jerk
I assume he's saying they are only translated into English if the name uses characters which aren't used in the English language, like Munchen and Goteborg with their umlauts, they are translated to Munich and Gothenburg. Otherwise, Bayern Munchen would be Bavaria Munich, wouldn't it?

Chris
they've only conceded 3 more goals than AC Milan who are top.Woah I just had to check the table after reading that. Juve are unbeaten but Milan are still 1 point ahead (having played 1 more game) despite losing 4 times. Those draws are killing the old lady. soundian
Read what i said.So why do we call teams from Milano AC and Inter Milan? There's no dodgy accents there to get in the way.I think it's probably just convention, how we're used to seeing/hearing the teams names. If you notice, there is a trend towards pronouncing Barcelona as Barthelona and not (as most people in this country still pronounce it) Barselona. Maybe in twenty years we'll all be saying it Barthelona.
Woodsinho
I'm pronouncing it Barkalona from now on.

The boy on here that lives in Barcelona can probably confirm.

Adam Easy Wishes
Nah, I don't think it is the other way.I think that normal Spains say Barthelona (like 'Arthenal' if you want another example). Catalans say Barse and Arse.
Shaki
I thought the "th" was used because someone in the Real family (DUCWIDT?) had a lisp and all good Spaniards wanted to copy it?Or has this been debunked on QI already? Maybe in twenty years we'll all be saying it Barthelona. You're missing the point. People can quite happily say Napoli or Naples without any prior knowledge of pronunciation of a countries language so there's no point bastardising it for the idiots. When Napoli works, why would you use anything else? He made a comparison between that and Bayern Munchen which isn't the same.

Soda Jerk
Also, AC and Inter don't call themselves Milano. It's the English who put the Milan in Inter's name, but AC Milan call themselves as such. Not sure why. That's a whole new can of worms, probably.
