National Anthem for Scotland

Recommended Posts

As we all should know, Scotland does not have an official national anthem.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what it should be?

I would choose either:

  1. Scotland the Brave
  2. Hope Springs Eternal by Capercaillie
  3. Loch Lomond by Runrig

There are also a few others that I might choose.

I think that Flower of Scotland is too anti English, pro war and depressing. Why should we use it as an unofficial one? Scotland is a country of peace and futuristic visions as many innovations of the past and present have proved. Why should we use a song which tells of slaughter and death which happened three to four hundred years ago.

It's not really anti English, it about the battle of Bannockburn, when Robert the Bruce defeated Edward II in 1314.

Its good to have a patriotic song, better than Scotland the brave, which is a pretty awful song. Flower of Scotland is rousing and anything but depressing, maybe you should listen to the whole song before making judgements on it.

A Song Ruined has a fair point. Michael Marra, the Dundee singer, wasn't keen on the "Here's tae us, wha's like us" crap, and wrote a song called "Hermless" as a possible Scottish National anthem. The chorus goes

"Hermless, hermless, there's never nae bother fae me

I ging tae the libry, I tak oot a book

And then I go hame for ma tea"

Personally, if we HAD to have a National Anthem I'd go for Hamish Henderson's "Freedom Come All Ye", with its socialist hands across the ocean theme.

God save the Queen.

No chance due to it being hijacked by football casuals of a certain nation not that far away from us, also it's already the Great British national anthem and unofficial english one.

Scotland is not a nation so scotland shouldn't have a national anthem. Our national anthem is god save the queen( unfortunately as it is one of the worst songs ever)

I agree with you on all counts. I only chose a song, cos I like it and think it would sound good sung by a few thousand rugby fans at Murrayfield!

In what way do you associate it with being the "unoffical english" national anthem? English people use the anthem as it is the National Anthem. As should Scotland. I don't like God Save the Queen...but it's the national anthem.

nation ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nshn)

n.

A relatively large group of people organized under a single, usually independent government; a country.

The territory occupied by such a group of people: All across the nation, people are voting their representatives out.

The government of a sovereign state.

A people who share common customs, origins, history, and frequently language; a nationality: Historically the Ukrainians are an ancient nation which has persisted and survived through terrible calamity (Robert Conquest).

A federation or tribe, especially one composed of Native Americans.

The territory occupied by such a federation or tribe.

So I suppose you could class Scotland as a nation. A nation doesn't have to be classed as under a government as I'm guessing you're classing it under. It can be calssed under a people, but I don't think it should be degenerated into what is and isn't a nation.

Caladonia sung by Eileen Rafferty / Jackie Miller et al....

What a beautiful song....

I`ve never thought of myself as Scottish to be honest although i`d class myself more as a Highlander than anything else.

EDIT:

I was chatting to someone the other day who`d never seen a Highland Cow...

Used to see a family of them every day in a field on the way to school. They are the coolest animals ever. AND they advertise Highland Toffee..... mmmm

Yes it's the national anthem in that it's the British national anthem. A search on the internet shows that either 1) England doesn't have a national anthem or 2) the national anthem of England is Land of Hope and Glory. The fact that both Scotland and Wales are the only nations that have individual national anthems just goes to show how proud the people were of being independant' date=' and the fact that England doesn't just shows how arrogant their ancestors were. Northern Ireland are a special case given all the trouble they have had over identity.

Scotland is not a nation so scotland shouldn't have a national anthem. Our national anthem is god save the queen( unfortunately as it is one of the worst songs ever)

Actually if you want to get into semantics England is the only country that has never been defined as either a nation or a country by boundry lines. Whoever split the countries that make up Britain, defined the borders for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but just labelled the rest as England. So if anything England is less of a nation than Scotland.

I'm sorry but to me a song about death and fighting is rather depressing! I have listened to the whole song. It is rousing and implies that we should rise up against England. How can you say that it is not anti English?

Wild Mountain Thyme gets my vote.

The name of the United Kingdom Of Great Britain and Northern Ireland refers to an association of Nations under a single head of state and government. Scotland is a nation within a nation.

By the way' date=' the word "nation" does not appear once in the 1707 Act of Union.[/quote']

Another great song which I would have to look seriously at.

Possiblyt the song with the words "i'll take the high road and you can take the low road"
