BBC NEWS | Business | Woolworths closure sale kicks off

But does anyone really care? It's hardly the staple of the high street it used to be, these days it seems to sell mostly tat that you can find a bigger selection of at Asda and Tesco, and it's not as cheap either. I think part of their downfall is that they are a "jack of all trades, master of none" - ie they have a small selection of loads of different things (toys, homeware, console games, electronics, CDs etc) but you can get a much better selection of these things at specialist stores, and Woolworths doesn't really specialise in anything.

Ah well, closing down sale starts today, head down to the Bon Accord for bargains a-plenty. Be prepared to elbow old ladies out of the way.

You get pick 'n' mix in Asda, in fact therein lies the root of Woolies' problem - the supermarkets have expanded into just about everything in the last ten years, and Woolies have simply been squeezed out.

Sad, and I'll always have fond memories of the old Wooliesss on Union Street where MacDonalds is now, but that 's market forces at work I'm afraid.

I think it's quite sad. I used to get my new school year stationary in Woolies and on Easter Monday we'd go on a day trip to a sea side town and get half price Easter eggs.

In saying that the last thing I bought from Woolworths was a birthday card about 2 months ago.

I bought some dominoes and Othello (the board game) about 6 months ago.

Scenes like that literally turn my stomach, fucking vultures circling. Can't stand seeing people degrading themselves like that.

Personally, I'm not arsed about it as I don't really do much shopping as such so I'm never in there. However, a friend has worked there for years and she's hanging on to the bitter end, hoping against hope for some sort of redundancy deal. Either way, the CV's been updated so good luck to her. I hope people spare a thought for her when they're scavenging their way through the place.

Not

Woolies is rammed full of worthless crap anyway, that's why it's closing down. You're right though, that won't stop people from falling over themselves to get 20% off a plastic Christmas tree.

Nothing worse than angry ladies with nothing better to do with their time than fall out in the aisles of a shop with a Xmas sale on....

My fiancee worked in Next in her student days - people queueing at like 2 in the morning to be the first through the door at the sale etc. She said people used to come quite close to fistycuffs if they didn't get the size off the rail they wanted.

Losers.

Shame to see Woolworths going down the pan. That's another toy shop gone from town.

Mind you, I won't miss the 'Back To School' posters just as the summer holidays were starting.

And where else am I going to buy all my JML crap?

Poundstretcher.

Also add Zavvi and Whittards to the list.

BBC NEWS | Business | Zavvi placed into administration

Typically, Branson timed it impeccably when he bailed out. He's got the Midas touch alright.

Not had a chance to look in the one here but I'm hearing that the security firm that provided cover for many Zavvi stores down south pulled their staff as soon as they knew about the administration thing.

Cue mental scenes of shoplifting in some places.

Shoplifters don't watch the news or have a clue about anything. It'll just be normal xmas shoplifting.

When I worked in the one in the Bon Accord centre there was no security guard (he got fired and was never replaced) and no CCTV. We got robbed blind every single day.
