start with Godspeed You Black Emperor and work your way from there through the constellation catalogue. some guff some amazing, lots of good ideas.

for heavier stuff you could do worse than get the first two pelican releases and if you like those get the other ones.

others worth checking out are gregor samsa, billy mahonie and a hell of a lot of bands from glasgow circa 6 years ago.

also how long will it take for this thread to turn into an argument about what's post-rock or not?

there is a good post-rock discussion site over at AfterThePostRock.com ~ Index

What is and isn't post-rock is very subjective and as Dave pointed out, will probably cause a "discussion" of sorts. I agree with the others recommendations as well. It's also worth checking out bands like Rosetta, Jesu, Manatees, Grails, Oceansize, Kayo Dot, Bloody Panda, Cult Of Luna, Callisto and Caspian if you like the heavier end too.

Haha, precisely.

Going down the Constellation route, I'd say Silver Mt Zion are worth checking out after Godspeed for a slightly more blissful alternative.

You should also check out some local stuff if you haven't already: Katerwaul and Greater the Shadow are both excellent, the former having a very fine record new out. Apparently Fault and Fracture are also super-good.

check out a band called ganger. they split a while ago but i think they are really over looked. craig from aereogramme use to be in them. their stuff is really interesting. think they had 2 bass guitars, guitar and sometimes two drummers. the album hammock style is well worth getting a hold of. theres some stuff on myspace here MySpace.com - ganger - Glasgow, Scotland - www.myspace.com/gangersouthofcaspian

Katerwaul are quality. Really good.

there is a thread about latitudes in the music discussion somewhere who from what ive heard are quite ISIS/Cult of Luna like. If you like all that Rosetta pretty much are isis so worth having a listen. Sika Redem too. possibly *shels too.

They don't like being described as post rock- but the ocean fracture are worth a listen - although their new choons don't dip into the post rock as much as the oldies.

I find more mellow screamo can be nice to post rock ears too. Envy and (nearer to home) Archives do it well.
