DON'T BUY 2 HARD DRIVES OR PRO TOOLS if you're wanting midi and recording under 24 tracks at once. Protools is bum for that, and cubase and logic would be more suited.

I've only had a mess around, but some friends (grnr germlin and acrnym) get some amazing stuff out of it live. Follow-on actions, beatmatching and controlled fx are damn good - I just bung multitracked samples from cubase into it - it didn't seem to offer that much as a recording environment. Anyone used melodyne?

I'm listening to the Red Sparowes album for the first time in a while, and it seems beautiful in textures and direction. Every song seems like a mini-EP. Anyone else of this persuasion? Also, http://www.lionelhampton.nl/ has been absolutely excellent listening tonight.
