  5. his picture was wank, so i didn't listen to anything, but go to www.isaiahwilliams.com . He's unbelievable.
  6. I've used Sennheiser MD421s which are really good all round mics for about the same price, but sharper than the shures.
  7. go to audioscrobbler.com and last.fm. It's a plugin that uses your winamp playlist to generate matches with your own, and others with similar music taste to make your own personal radio station. And it works! My username's m0nkyb0y.

    tech heads...

they don't really do anything out of the ordinarly as regards equipment. Some of their songs aren't bad at all.

    Death...

where're the 10 samples going to come from? Me and matt had an "amen break"-off a couple of weeks ago which was interesting. 1 sample, 1 hour incidentally - up here: ftp://80.229.1.39/ login as guest, password is "password".
  11. Lightning Bolt - The Faire folk Primus - tommy the cat Candiria - Constant velocity... not the best by any means, but good. Incidentally, go to http://www.isaiahwilliams.com/ and check out the video. He's 9!!!
  12. pointless me repeating what andy said, but everyone's missing out the majesty of the thumb!
  13. les paul std, schecter diamond series with dimarzio pickups, yamaha classical and electroacoustic, yamaha bass, ex7 keyboard. i've stolen my flatmate's double bass and have a couple of mics and a not bad pc cubase setup. And a shit peavey amp and a jcm 900 100 watt combo. Party pieces are eruption and bach's fugue in d on slap bass
  14. about 20 grand. Soundfonts are good if you have a compuddler.

    Merzbow

the arches was great. maldoror, dharma and merzbox (big compilation) are the only ones I have. The merzbox was pretty cheap, i'd recommend it. Anyone know how much stuff that guy's actually put out?
  16. I've played a lot of yamahas and owned a rbx with pickups changed which i loved and still have (in two bits. in a bag) i quite like the rock bass budget warwicks.
  17. It's phat, but the tunes don't go anywhere.
  18. a gameport can usually be converted to MIDI with the appropriate cable. I heartily recommend the soundblaster live! value to anyone, as it uses a chip (101k) used on a high end emu card, and hence has cracked asio (gets low latency for audio in cubase etc) drivers by kxproject, and the gameport can be used for MIDI with a 10 cable. They'll be really cheap too (10ish?) If you get a master keyboard (MIDI keyboard or a keyboard with just MIDI out) and perhaps a small mixer for the line-in it'd be sweet. I like using audiomulch for software sometimes too.
  19. Cornelius (DVD is AMAZING), Kid606, Cex, Squarepusher, Atari Teenage Riot, FSOL, Coldcut. Autechre
  20. yup! the man on the burning tightrope is very good.
  21. I've noticed quite a lot of cheeky samples, some everlast and sonic youth, but it's excellently chopped up.

    lofi

naa, there's something great about recording in really weird places and crackly record players and recording with shit microphones and limiting drums to get a huge sound. If a cd's badly engineered, it wasn't done with enough creativity or mixed well, but I don't think that's synonymous with the popular definition of lofi. We ended up choosing a mini belt amplifier recorded with a 3 pc microphone rather than my JCM900 or amplitube because it gave a far better sound for the song. Stripey, having asked the question of what lofi is, you don't seem to want to accept any other definitions than bad quality recording.

    Musical tastes

I first started listening to metal (anthrax, 'tallica, gnr) and hendrix when I was about 8, then got into hardcore and grunge, then into listening to more metal bands and heavier metal, started getting into prog (tool, king crimson) and electronica towards the end of school. Since coming to uni i listen to a lot more electronic music (gabbacore shall become a musical genre!), moderate amounts of jazz and prog and usually tons of fairly complex or heavy music. I still like most of the music I always did. On a side note, I borrowed a live cd today from tchai featuring al di meola, john mclaughlin and paco de lucia and it's absolutely fucking stunning.
  24. get one of the (correctly) transcribed versions of eruption, and practice it with a metronome, and up the speed a notch every time you get it right.
