Spoonie should know the joys of the warwick and gallien-kruger combo. I tried for 12 months to get a bad sound out of that. I recorded a track with my yamaha going into a fully distorted JCM 900, and the FX send going into an 8*12 ashdown setup, which I loved.

Not at all. Try it if you've got some old sweaty strings. My flatmate last year does it, and he's a darn good bass player. Just takes all the residue off them.

if we're all being anal, if you fancy a new set of bass strings, just boil the old ones in the kettle, seriously.

I'd just ground it properly.

I had a similar problem with my guitar, and had to rewire it because the live wire exposed and soldered really badly. I'd check the wiring. Decoupling capacitors are only typically used in DC circuits I think. Z=1/jwC and all that malarkey.
