Vegans

Also, girlanachronism, are your clothes vegan too? If so, any good stores to recommend?

Yeah, I don't wear any leather, wool or silk. I find that most of the high street stores do cheap faux leather shoes and accessories. There are a couple of specialist vegan clothes stores that do really well made shoes that last forever, like Bourgeois Boheme: Vegan Shoes & Ethical Fashion - Bourgeois Boheme, but the styles tend to be fairly limited and they can be a little on the pricey side. Jeans and things are easy as well, the majority of Levi's jeans now have a cardboard label on the back as opposed to a leather one. There aren't really any specialist vegan or ethical clothing stores in Aberdeen, but I get buy fairly well on the high street, I just keep an eye on the labels and occasionally buy vintage too.

It's probably not a massive deal if you're changing from veggie to vegan, but it's not a good time for drastic diet changes.

Oh yeah, nah my exams are a while off, not gonna mix exam stress with dietary change. Thanks for the tip though. You a vegan yourself or just happen to know a bit?

Yeah, was thinking there'd probably be no real need to use specialist stores. Tbh gonna probably get the dietary side of it sorted before I start fucking around with all my clothes, baby steps and all that. Who knows, might try it for a coupla weeks and find it's not for me? Wait and see. Gonna be heartbreaking to part with my Adidas high-tops though :(

I am but a man who loves vegetables.

I've stopped eating wheat and lactose on separate occasions however, and it made me sluggish as fuck (albeit about 2 stone lighter in the case of the wheat amnesty) until I got used to it.

It's definitely a good idea to make the transition slowly, give your body time to adjust. You absolutely shouldn't feel sluggish or lethargic (I actually felt the opposite), but if you do, you need to figure out quickly what you're missing, and it's probably sensible to revert to your previous diet until you get it sussed, as it's certainly not worth getting ill over.

It's near impossible to be 100% vegan anyway, there's animal derivatives in so much stuff; camera films, some plastics used in electrical fittings, so unless you're planning on living in a cave then it's pretty difficult, but I personally feel a lot better just making as much effort as I can. When I first became veggie, I continued to wear a lot of my non-vegetarian clothes until I could afford to buy new ones, and then gave them to a charity shop. A lot of vegans will wear their old non-vegan clothes until they're totally worn out and have to be chucked, and will refrain from buying any more non-vegan clothes in the future, I think that's fair enough.

Yeah, these are all sound tips guys, thank you!

Thing is, I quite enjoy my weightlifting. I want to keep that up but is that even possible when vegan? Need to consume probably 130-150g of protein a day without going over (roughly) 2,700 calories a day and not consuming too much fat. Possible to bulk up on a vegan diet?

Most of the online resources are about losing weight through a vegan diet but I don't want to do that!

I'm sure Bill Pearl is Vegan now too.

Here's a nice, cheap, simple and tasty lunchtime recipe:

Pita bread pizzas

You'll need:

-One or two small wholemeal pita breads (you can pick up packs of 6 in most supermarkets for pretty cheap).

-Passata (this is just sieved tomatoes, you can buy big cartons and jars of this at any supermarket for dirt cheap, often less than 30p a carton. A fraction of the cost of pizza topping sauce and sans all the added salt/sugar).

-Veggies of your choice for topping (I try different combinations a lot, but right now I'm loving red pepper, red onion, mushrooms, plenty of jalapenos and black olives).

-One clove of garlic (optional)

-Olive oil

*Pre-heat oven to 180C

*Chop the veg.

*Pour a liberal amount of passata over the top of the pita breads and top with the veg.

*This step is optional, but I think it makes the veg cook a bit better: mix around 1 tbsp olive oil with a crushed garlic clove and lightly drizzle over the top of the pizzas.

*Bake for around 20 minutes.

*Enjoy!

I like taking a couple with me to work in my lunchbox and eating them cold.

Just remember (like REALLY bear it in mind) that Vegans stink like no other people in the world. Do not think that you can drop out a silent parp while in the company of others. They will know that it is you, because nothing honks like a Vegan trump.

Complete and utter shit.

Being vegetarian for 4 years then vegan for two my arse didn't smell any worse than before or after I was veg*n.

But if you are, you are not really the best person to judge the potency of your own parps. Independent adjudication required.

From experience of being stuck in vans with vegans and non-vegans eating lots of vegan food (on tour), I've found that vegans' farts are no more potent than anyone else's. However, non-vegans/vegetarians that are eating a lot of vegan food (as we did on tour) do tend to have horrendously dirty bums.
