I watched Manhattan again last night. Probably my favourite Woody Allen film. Beautifully shot in black and white, rather touching albeit ferociously cynical romantic comedy story - complete with some very cool one liners.

8/10

I heart this film. It's between this and Annie Hall for my favourite Woody Allen film.

Megamind

Another 'watch with the bairn' film. Will Ferrell voices master criminal with big blue head Megamind, who kills off his arch-rival Metro Man (Brad Pitt) and then realises his life is empty without his nemesis to battle, so he tries to create another superhero. Hal a news cameraman (Jonah Hill) accidentally becomes said superhero, ends up being shite and then seeks revenge on Megamind after he suspects him of shagging his unrequited love interest Roxanne (Tina Fey). Some pretty funny bits, better than average for this sort of thing.

Burke and Hare

Nowhere near as bad as I expected it to be. A few good laugh out loud moments and heaps of cameos made it an entertaining weeknight film. Brilliant turn from Ronnie Corbett.

RED

I spent the first 10 minutes wondering if this was the same film I thought it was and if it was how was it going to turn into the film I thought it was. As soon as I voiced that thought it immediately changed gears and became the ridiculous, over the top film I was expecting. Awesome casting - Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Brian Cox, Morgan Freeman, Richard Dreyfuss, soon to be Judge Dredd Karl Urban, the kooky brunette from The West Wing, the old guy from Airwolf! All of them over doing things magnificently and having a great time destroying everything in sight.

Ok, the dialogue could have been better for a Friday night film to go with a few beers it was pretty awesome.

Eden Lake: For a pretty low budget Brit Horror flick it was very watchable, nicely paced and gory enough to keep me interested. Pretty bleak on the ending front too. Plus the chick in it is gorgeous (always helps). 7/10

Oh buggering hell, bleak barely even describes the last half hour of this film. I wanted to kill myself when the credits were rolling. I had to punch my bird in the face just to cheer myself up.

Yep that last bit fair stayed with me for a while.

The lives of Others: Great moving German drama. Made me appreciate being able to do things we take for granted such as this post for example. 8/10

The latest viewage....

Men Behind The Sun

Based-on-fact drama about Squadron 731, a Japanese military unit who were attempting to devleop a strain of the bubonic plague for biological warfare use and also carried out horrific experiments on Chinese and Soviet prisoners during WW2. Extremely gruesome. The version I have is dubbed (badly) and some of the dialogue is risible as a result. Lots of Dr Evil escalting laughter, the type where the bad guys starts, then his henchmen nervously join in kind of ruin the grave nature of what's going on. No rating

Martyrs

An existensial gore-fest from those crazy French! I don't want to give too much away, but it's a must-see for fans of "clever" horror movies. 9/10

Fragile

Fairly interesting wee chiller (set in the Isle of Wight) about strange-goings on at a children's hospital. Stars thon burd out of Ally McBeal who is/was knobbing old mumbly Blade Runner himself Harrison Ford. 6/10

Teeth

"Vagina Dentata!, Vagina Dentata!" exclaims the gynaecologist, clutching his hand with four (aye FOUR) blood-spurting stumps, whilst the teenager on the examination table screams in horror. Check this wee badly-acted/scripted gem out - it's prablably the only chance you'll get to see a Rottweiler snacking on a severed cock....outside of Northfield anyway. 7/10

The Lucky Ones - Three US army soliders (Tim Robbins, Michael Pena and the deliciously lovely Rachel McAdams) on leave and forced together on a road trip from New York to Las Vegas. Realistic characters and dialogue and all three lead actors were superb. Nothing mind blowing or particularly original about the story but a charming little tale nonetheless. 7/10

Neds

Film about how a young lad in Glasgow caleld John McGill strays from being a promising student to a delinquent when he mixes with the wrong crowd. Starts well but seems to lose direction about halfway through. Some of the best characters seemed to get very little screen time, i.e. John's big brother Benny's mate with the sideys, hilarious during the first meeting with John (albeit with some benefit from subtitles even for Scottish folk). Not bad but not great.

6/10

Unfortunately there is no such thing.

What if you wash it with Febreze?

FRESH.

I just noticed I haven't actually watched any films in too long. And there's been some really good looking ones in the cinema. 13.50 for this unlimited card and I never bloody use it!

Watched the start of Inception the other day before the Grand Prix if that counts?

***** - I love it.

SherryBaby - Interesting without ever being gripping; poigant without ever being affecting; deep without ever being profound; in short, good without every being great. Loads of naked Maggie Gyllenhaal though, if that's your thing.

***

The Last King of Scotland - Terrific performance from Forest Whitaker. Stunning movie all round.

*****

Child's Play 2 - Really expected this to suck, turned out I enjoyed it very much. Arguably better than the original. Creepy, but never scary. And possibly the best DVD cover of all time.

The Fighter - Watched this on Saturday night having spent the best part of the day in the pub so I am not responsible for my own opinion. I really enjoyed it though. A decent story and and a cracking (if you'll excuse the pun) performance from Christian Bale. 8/10

A Perfect Getaway - I don't tend to watch horror films (which is how this was classified by Love Film - more of a gory thriller I think) because my girlfriend refuses to watch them because she gets nightmares and I don't like being scared on my own. I thought I'd give it a shot and am please to say I was very brave. 75% of it was just building up to the finale with the odd jumpy bit and in isolation was quite dull but when the twist was exposed and it all came together I thought it was quite smart and exciting. I'm not an expert on the genre so don't know how it compares but it was only an hour and a half long and so I'd say it is worth the watch. Nice looking girls in it too 6.5/10

Forgot this one (had blanked it from my memory):

Casino Jack - Kevin Spacey and Barry Pepper play nefarious lobbyists in George W. era America. Based on the true story of Jack Abramoff (Spacey). A convoluted plot that was hard to follow, particularly if you’re not totally clued up on the American political system, characters I didn’t care about and hammy acting. 2/10

28 Weeks Later - Pretty gruesome, but not exactly an amazing film. More just...gruesome. Wooden acting from most of the cast.

Aye. It's like a "not as good as the first one, but still good" kinda film. Also, even though it was directed by a European (am I right? canna mind) it seems really American compared to the first one.

I don't mind the film that much but it bugged me how they overused the great bit of music from the climax of '28 Days Later'.
Agreed. I think that score should be kept under-played, to preserve its effect when hearing it. Kinda like I'm fed of hearing the Requiem for a Dream score played fucking EVERYWHERE.

YES! I didn't mind it the first time it appeared, which I think was in a trailer for one of the 'Lord of the Rings' films but it's definitely been oversaturated.

Our latest two Love Film DVD's didnt work... which is unusual. So I watched Inglorious Basterds again... SUPERB.... also have watched Taxi Driver which I missed out on first time around. you've probs all seen that ... so you know its genius. Life is Beautiful another one recently viewed... Genius film .. Italian 2nd World War story thats starts off as a slapstick comedy and quickly becomes a grim story about Nazi Death camps... well worth watching.

Ed Wood

I watched this Tim Burton classic again at the weekend. It's such a great movie with a wonderful central performance by Johnny Depp as the wannabe director who's boundless enthusiasm cannot be dampened by his complete lack of talent. Martin Landau's Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his astonishing performance as the ageing, drug-addicted Bela Lugosi has to one of the industry's most deserved awards. It's worth watching the movie just for Lugosi's reaction to the very mention of Boris Karloff (who he colourfully describes as "that Limey Cocksucker"). Funny and moving. 10/10

Project Nim: Documentary about an experiment done in the 1970s to raise a chimpanzee with a human family to see if it can learn sign language. A very compelling and sometimes rather disturbing film, although I didn't think it was told as well as it could have been. Sometimes the dramatisations and the music were a bit intrusive. The scientist who ran the project comes out of it pretty badly. He seemed to be doing the research more to provide opportunities to get into the pants of the female research assistants rather than for any scientific reasons. Very worth seeing though.

The Town

Is it just me or was this just a remake of Heat? Very, very similar to Michael Mann's brilliant film. In fact I'm pretty sure at one point Ben Affleck's character is sat in his flat watching Heat on TV. Anyway it was a pretty good film. Not as good or as important as some reviews claimed it to be but at least Affleck's making decent movies again.

Morning Glory

I thought this was great fun. Diane Keaton and Harrison Ford are superb and the whole thing played like a straighter 30 Rock. I reckon it would have been an even better film without the shoe-horned romantic comedy sub-plot.

30: Minutes or Less

Went to Cineworld in Union Square on a Friday night for this and promptly remembered why I don't go to Cineworld in Union Square on a Friday night. Despite that the film was decent. The same director as Zombieland teaming up again with Jesse Eisenberg and also starring a ridiculously over the top Danny McBride. A stupid story, stupid characters but all played for fun and it makes a good Friday night film.
