  1. I've never really understood playing in a covers band. I enjoy messing about with mates and playing a 'cover', but i reckon the kick you'd get out of playing music that'd you had written and one person enjoying it would far outweigh the kick you'd get playing a cover and ten people enjoying it. thats just what i think though. i have no experience. function bands are a bit different. see them as more of a service to be honest... kind of like a caterer. or a dj is probably a better comparison. i think i'd quite happily be in a function band and play for free. especially one of those scottish country ones that play at celidhs. looks a good larf.

    Song Writing

I don't know... If you mean time-wise your definetly right. But the sound we are getting out at the end is definetly what we all want and something none of us could have come up with on our own.
  3. Beats an office job... tenfold. I'd use the money to make music i was really interested in.

    Song Writing

do you end up using all those ideas or no? and do you come up with them collectively or write them on your own? i heard a while back Renn is some sort of Guitar Pro virtuoso and writes a lot of his music on there. Blessed time signatures + guitar pro; that just baffles me. i'm far too musically inept for anything like that. with regards to the archives stuff - thats basically the way we write and what i was trying to explain in a "crap at explaining things" kinda way. what about key and scales and stuff like that? does somebody have an idea and say "its in E minor" or is it just a kind of trial and error to see what fits? (questions directed at everybody)
  5. I'd be interested to know how other bands (local or not) go around their song writing. Heard a bunch of bands doing it a bunch of different ways. If anyone has experience in which a more than one way which one has worked best for you/your band? Also interested in whether different genres/styles a/effects the way a band writes.
  6. went to look at the transition ones today. they were ok. The amps they had there were pretty small looking 65w maybe for the guitars not sure about the bass. mackie pa as far as i was aware with 4 mic inputs. 2 shure sm58's with stands. plenty of sockets etc. cable for amps. not for mics. cymbals supplied. seemed fine for more 'get in a room and thrash about' kind of thing. probably not for the more serious bands. unless you basically had all your own gear and wanted a cheaper practice. a down side is that the rooms are upstairs! but i do think there was a lift, so if your cabs etc have casters you should be fine. its 14 an hour, but from what the guy in there was saying for a membership it costs 15 a year. for members it costs 11/hour for members. so as long as you go there for more than 5 hours its worth the fuss. plus you can always crack out your weapon of choice and go out for a board/wheelyboot/bike. how nostalgic.
  7. white sounding hip hop... think you've just gone and created yourself a whole new genre there. or is that not r'nb? speaking of which the more mature classic rock fans on these forums must be just as annoyed as the people who are up in arms about the mis-use of emo. didn't stuff like early fleetwood mac and led zepplin not get called rhythm and blues? or r'nb? it seems only to be rock music that has a crazy amount or genres and sub genres. back in the day when i wore 36" jeans on my 30" waist and wore tees that most people could drown in i noticied there was only a couple of names that all essentially meant the same thing. Indie Rap or Underground Hip Hop. This covered everything from darker stuff like el-p and cannibal ox to rap with a lot of hardcore links (i guess because of the new york hardcore scene) like non phixion. maybe i just didnt bother taking any notice.
  8. apparently random is a way of describing someone's personality. if you describe yourself as random this makes you especially cool/different/?'emo'? i forgot to say it annoys me that people who say they are "really into music" or "into any kinda music (except that screemy shite and deth metal lol)" and don't dig a little deeper.
  9. don't forget pissing on (and alledgedly bottling) some poor girl. i enjoy bitching about the 'scene' and people who put [ON TOUR] on their myspace when they travel down to dundee. but i'm sure there is someone who enjoys bitching about how i don't understand doom/doom metal and how i can like post rock bands because "the songs are too long" or something to that effect. it can go on like this forever. what is annoying is that a lot of people won't or just can't be arsed digging anywhere below the surface and expose themselves what they may or may not like. its just (as maxi says) all to do with advertising and people listening to stuff they are spoonfed.
  10. wasn't there a night a couple of years back in the deen where a bunch of bands played a set plus a pantera cover...? a tribute to dime or something. thought that was a pretty crafty idea.
  11. Pretty poor to be honest... not really sure what they're playing at
  12. Wales handed Japan's ass to them tonight. i enjoyed it. Japanese put on an ok performance. The Japanese 11 had a bit of toe on him. England vs. samoa tomorrow. I reckon it could go either way. Hope Henry Tuilagi has is bouncing boots on and gets a few Englishmen to take a seat.
  13. i have nothing witty to comeback with. defeated... i'm a broken man. i wasn't actually commenting on his hair though. i was talking about that "mosh and roll" slogan. mingin.
  14. couldnt see a dd-3 going for more than 40 quid on ebay...
  15. oooucha. you willing to go any lower on the dd-3? cheeky, but i'm tight. :] Huw

    Metal is shit

hear hear. they put on a quality show. and the vocalist's leg shuffle... i wish i could do that. Machine Head... I was a big fan (of 'through the ashes...') when i didn't really know anything. They are very cheesy, especially on 'The Blackening' (the name..awful) but i just take them for what they are now. Occasionally i do get overwhelmed by just how bad Robb's lyrics are though.
  19. jesse was it only weed he was on...?
  20. i didnt think much of HHLL. there sound wasnt amazing. i liked the bass tone though. dirty as fuck. the vocalist from what i could see was caned on something. him and the 'gyrating' guitarist didnt really win me over. fbtmof dissappointed a lot of people i think. i heard a lot of talk, they didnt deliver though. the vocals were so high in the mix too. not pleasant. i felt like a complete arse standing there with a finger in my ear. worse than all this though; 'Bleed From Within' had a song called Let's Play God.
  21. nae entirely sure if theres been a post. apoligies if there has. apparently the vituoso drummer has become a permanant addition. Chris will never get to play alternate bars of 7/4 and 5/4 live again. just wondering what people's take on this is? and whether anyone knows what went/goes on in Dillinger?
  22. chun-chun-wee-wee? Would that be a verbalised version of a 'beatdown'? ace. Striking open strings repeatedly proves that so many of these bands are lacking in talent. Even if they are 'talented' (can sweep pick), proves they have very little song writing ability. I could put up with the hair etc if there was something solid behind it all, but theres not.
  23. The bit where they say 'Chris' instead of 'drums'. Ha. I never really enjoyed this cover, as much as i like Greg's voice, it just didn't do it. The 'solo' was rubbish too. If they really were gonna just do a straight forward cover a cheesy 'hi-gain' solo would have been the order of the day. Pentatonic all the way. The slightly poppier side of me enjoys a very select few of the Radio One Live Lounge covers. Like Razorlight - Hey Ya! and Lost Prophets - Cry Me A River. Just a smadge different, but a nice listen. Futureheads - Hounds of Love. The vocals, i do love them.
