Went to see A Serious Man the other day. Very enjoyable. Not sure it's one of the Coens' very best but it's still got all the usual ingredients of their more humerous stuff. It's very Jewish, particularly at the beginning. A couple actually walked out bewildered during the opening sequence, perhaps because they thought they'd stumbled into a 'difficult' foreign film by mistake. Today I returned to the Belmont to see The Red Shoes, which I'd never seen before. It's easy to see why it's a classic - incredibly bright and vivid, with great performances and set pieces. Proper old fashioned cinema - it must have been extraordinary in 1948.
