  1. I like the guy who asked if he could just buy 'Here comes the hot stepper' by Ini Kamoze.
  2. Can I suggest the IMP folks lay down a few ground rules to Ms Cairney if they book her again. Maybe something like "The role of the support act is to support the main act and not for them and their mates to talk through the main act's set". Just basic stuff, something like that .
  3. Lovely set by MSTU. Very nice people too. Nicky Cairney was all right but I was irritated by her and particularly her mates noisily jabbering their way through much of MSTU's set, despite the fact that people, including MSTU, had been quiet and respectful during hers. It wouldn't have been so bad if they were at the back but they were very near the front. Hypocritical and irritating.
  4. Laura is totally great - from the very top division of singer-songwriters. I enjoyed Clyde too.
  5. Would love to have heard them do Modern Girl. I think the other one was a Robert Palmer number.
  6. I got mine from OneUp Records. Not sure if they're available online.
  7. Just listening to them and am really impressed. The band includes some people from Laura's band. I like the tune 'Torrey Pines' with Kimya Dawson. Maybe we could get them to drop the 'e' and do an Aberdonian version.

  9. Monkey Swallows the Universe made my favourite album of 2007 and they're wonderful live. This is also likely to be their penultimate gig ever, or at least for quite a while, as the band are going on 'indefinite hiatus'. It should be a special night.
  10. BBC NEWS | Scotland | North East/N Isles | Fresh hope offered to Lemon Tree
  11. I got it as a download from EMusic. It'd be really good to see her here!
  12. Arborea "Wayfaring Summer" Robert Pollard "Coast to coast carpet of love" and "Standard gargoyle decisions" Sharron Kraus "Right wantonly a-mumming" Paula Frazer "Indoor Universe" and "Leave the sad things behind" Malcolm Middleton "Into the Woods" Imitation Electric Piano "Blow it up, burn it down, kick it 'til it bleeds" PJ Harvey "White chalk"
  13. Thistletown debut. I'm also expecting a new Alela Diane record, which I think should be very fine.
  14. Top ten might be something like this: Alasdair Roberts 'The Amber Gatherers' Efterklang 'Under Giant Trees' & 'Parades' Electrelane 'No Shouts, No Calls' Jeffrey Lewis '12 Crass Songs' Lisa Knapp 'Wild and Undaunted' Monkey Swallows the Universe 'The Casket Letters' Nina Nastasia & Jim White 'You Follow Me' Paula Frazer & Tarnation 'Now it's Time' Rachel Unthank & the Winterset 'The Bairns' Voice of the Seven Woods 'Voice of the Seven Woods' Of these, the one I keep coming back to is Monkey Swallows the Universe 'The Casket Letters'. Wonderful record.
  15. According to Emma's Myspace, this gig is now cancelled. She says she's hoping to return to Aberdeen in 2009!
  16. I'd noticed the wonderful Monkey Swallows the Universe were playing Aberdeen and I'm glad to see IMP are putting the show on. It looks like being their penultimate show ever, rather sadly, after they announced they were putting the band on 'indefinite hiatus' so make sure you get along. Good to see the equally wonderful Mary Hampton will be back in Aberdeen too.
  17. It's not that cheap but the Foyer always does really good vegetarian dishes. Nice desserts too.
  18. Over the past three years some of the best gigs I've ever been to have been at the Lemon Tree: Bonnie Prince Billy Boredoms Alasdair Roberts and Mary Hampton this year The Arab Strap Triptych show a couple of years ago with Tape, My Latest Novel and Kieran Hebden One that particularly stands out was the amazing (though quite poorly attended) show with Maher Shalal Hash Baz, Bills Wells, Tenniscoats, Kama Aina. I went along not knowing what to expect but it was one of the most wonderful things I've ever seen.
  19. I'd also say Carbon Glacier is best. They're all good though.
  20. This bit of Will dressed in a skeleton suit is quality. And he sings on it. Watching it's good but doesn't quite make up for Scout being 'unexpectedly ill' and cancelling her show in Glasgow last night. Which was a bit of an arse if you'd travelled down from Aberdeen for it.
  21. I like loads of female artists but I recently came to the conclusion that three stand above all others for me: Mary Timony Juana Molina Nina Nastasia
  22. Sad to hear that. I remember hearing Laura Cantrell play his stuff a lot on her radio show. Country has lost a lot of its greats in recent years.
  23. I guess fairly American in focus and more on modern things, which probably explains why Peter Sarstedt's 'Where do you go to my lovely' isn't on there. Because it's without doubt the worst song ever written. 4 Non-blondes and Billy Joel's 'We didn't start the fire' are also pretty terrible, so at least they got them.
