  1. Yep, great UK Band, one of only five rock bands with two original studio albums selling over 10 million copies each in the US - and the first UK band to do it consecutively. The others are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Van Halen. 30 years after their first album they're still a top 5 act in the US and top 10 act here, and more importantly they're fun, they don't really take themselves seriously and they really appreciate their influences. When the great Mick Ronson was ill Joe Elliott paid for a fair chunk of his medical expenses, Joe Elliott is remastering the new Thin Lizzy albums, quite well from the one or 2 tracks I have heard. As I said before I like 'em, they're fun, they do some good tunes and if no-one else likes them, that's fine, I have a better chance of getting near the frony at their gigs
  2. Its hardly comparable to compare foxhunting to the mining industry, according to the countryside alliance: Total hunt income is 14.9million per annum. This derives 57% from member and subscriber charges, 30% from hunt fund raising and 13% from other sources. (taken from Fox Hunting - (supportfoxhunting.co.uk)) There are 748 joint or single hunt Masters (average 2.7 per hunt). They have 510 full time hunt employees (average 2.6 per hunt) and 325 part time employees (average 1.7 per hunt). Total employees plus 'professional' masters amount to about 950. So that's under 1000 people employed in foxhunting in the UK, and you think that's comparable to the fact here used to be 1 million people employed in mining, and even in the early 80's there was 200,000 - that's 200x more I actually agree that this seems opportunistic politics, but your comparison to fox hunting seemed to me to be the kind of totally wrong comparison.
  3. Favourite shows at the moment: NCIS Castle Lie to Me (Tim Roth is excellent in ths) Chuck Bones just started watching Shit My Dad says - which is good but i cant help feeling the character of the father is a less likeable version of the great Denny Crane. Rewatching just to remember how good they were: The Grandaddy of them all - M*A*S*H - Still powerfull, still funny, and often still very sad - the episode with the death of henry Blake is one of the best moments ever recorded for TV. Firefly Buffy the Vampire Slayer Boston Legal - You dont really ehar of this over here but I love it James Spader and William Shatner playing very unlikeable, likeable characters.
  4. Going to see it on Thursday, looking forward to it
  5. One of the best live gigs I've ever been to was Dido and i still regularly play the first 2 albums in the car, at the moment alternated with Springsteen. That being said, even i don't rate the third album much. As I've got older my tastes have definitely changed but I still like most of what I liked previously, not so keen on Marillion as i was then, still like the older stuff, but not so keen on the newer stuff. The last few gigs I've been to have been Asia, Squeeze, Thin Lizzy and the Divine Comedy and the next few are: Marillion weekend in Holland, Brian May and Kerry Ellis and probably Fish when he announces his Aberdeen date Then again as I've got older I care even less what people think of my musical tastes and don't feel any need to defend my favourites anymore - I like em and if other people don';t that's up to them, I generally really enjoy what i listen to, don't go to as many gigs nowadays so just go to things i think I'll really enjoy, and just for the record I'm also waiting and looking forward to Def Leppard touring again
  6. He did some cracking tunes with Genesis, was never a huge fan of his solo stuff but I really like things like: No Son of mine: Land of Confusion: - though in this case the video helps. Jesus he Knows Me: Mama - YouTube - Genesis - Mama (Wembley) HQ Home by the Sea - And there are loads of good ones imo. Phil Collins is an easy target but he's done some cracking tunes. Not sorry to see him go as a solo artist but will be ssad if it means no more Genesis reunions.
  7. Which would, unless my calculations are incorrect make you 14/15 when you left school ?
  8. Saddest obe of the year for me, the great Nicholas Courtney, otherwise known to a generation as Brigadier Sir Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, or the Brig. Chap with wings - Five rounds Rapid... Planet Mondas Nicholas Courtney 1929 – 2011
  9. I would also say a lot of her policies helped to create the "me, me, me" attitude that we have now that has lead imo to a selfish attitude that has caused a lot of social problems that we have nowadays. The 80's under Thatcher were a selfish decade and I think that the children of that decade being the grown ups of today is a lot of the reason why we have such a selfish and greedy attitude. I'm not saying this wouldnt have happened anyway, it could be argued people are inherently selfish and greedy but the 80's policies encouraged, to a degree, that type of attitude. As I said previousdly a great Prime minister if you lived in the south, not so much for the North.
  10. She stole the milk !! To be fair to Thatcher some of what she did she had to the previous Labour government had left the country in a mess, however she did oversee a complete decimation of the manufacturing base of the counry and a series of privatisation deals that cerainly havent helped the industries etc - all of that is still open to interpretation as to how much could be avoided. She also liked to use Scotland as guinea pigs ie poll tax. Anyway best bet is cehck out her wiki page for more information then make your own mind up, but if you were London based you might well rate her as excellent, but if you worked in the shipyards of Govan etc you might think otherwise.
  11. Bruce Springsteen With The Sessions Band - Live In Dublin - DVD or Bluray The Barenaked Ladies - In America - The Stunt Tour Marillion - Live at Lorely are my most watched
  12. Was nice to see everyone, sorry, to those I spoke to, I was so quiet, i was just knackered, and then pissed off cos my new camera ran out of batteries before I could get a chance to play with it properly Also was so tired left before the end so apologies to Jo for missing most of her second set. Really enjoyed the first one and Bigsby's set. Nice to hear the Sweetest Smile again - still a brilliant pop ballad
  13. Jo McCafferty and Dusty Valentino will both be playing sets at the Old Schoolhouse on the 2nd February. A rare chance to see Malpaso Gang guitarist Dusty play a solo set and Jo will be playing a mixture of songs from her past albums and her latest 'Overtaking on a Bend'. 14. Absolute rubbish imo, my dad was a joiner for the council and my mum a telephonist for a bank and they worked night and day so all 3 of us could go to Gordons (admitedly something that comparitavely with the current price of fees might not be doable i dont know), my dad did homers every week pretty much, and I genuinelly think it was a good thing for all of us, and has benefitted us. There are rich and elitist twats at private school undoubtedly, but that's the same for all of us. If you're lazy and not willing to work it doesnt matter whether you go to state school or private aschool you wont get much out of it, if you're willing to put the effort in I genuinelly think, if you can afford it you will get a better education at private school (this may have changed its been 16 years since I left school, but thats how it was when I was there), I would also say that whether you have the 'superior' attitude etc that is presumed to be from private school is far more something that is instilled at home, as no-one ever believes i went to a private school and I think thats far more to do with the attitude of people, something I think comes from the attitude shown at home.
  15. In the early 80's we used to get Starblazer, and the Eagle one when they did that, which was very good, Used to love the Eagle and Eagle/Scream in the early 80's with the Thirteenth Floor, Doomlord, monster and Dan Dare.
  16. The best ones are the ones with the original core team of Clement Freud, Derek Nimmo, Kenneth Williams and Peter Jones, sadly all now passed on, but Paul Merton also does a sterling job.
  17. Anyone but Sky, we had them but wanted to change the name on the account from my girlfriends name to my name, in order to do this we had to cancel one account and open another, which we guaranteed would be a maximum of 2 weeks, the account was shut down on the 23rd december and we're still waiting for broadband, add to this the fact that i said I only wanted line rental from them if they could keep my number, and they ignored this, deleted our existing number and gave us a new one, and told us we couldnt get our own number back again, and that they sent us a letter asking us to phone them (which we never got, and we didnt have a phone line) to discuss it, when they didnt hear anything they just went ahead, despite the fact during this time I had spoken to them on the phone and they hadnt mentioned this problem. So really you don't want to go Sky, they're good when everything goes well but a nightmare when things go wrong and think nothing about lying to get clients.
  18. Sherlock Holmes was a decent action film, but a shit Sherlock Holmes film
  19. I'm assuming that's Henning Wehn, he was the support at the Stewart Lee gjg last year and was absolutely brilliant, really enjoyed him, so I'm more likely to give him a chance on other things but I've not noticed him being too bad.
  20. I like the Uxbridge English Dictionary rouind where they try to come up with new word definitions... some need to be read outloud before you get them : Abominable practice frowned upon by all but the most aggressive of matadors Accomplish one who aids and abets Sean Connery Admin contribute the least Apollo Roman god of chicken Appearing an iPhone app that pierces your ear while you talk on it Balderdash the rapid receding of a hairline Canada a snake in a tin Category an allegory about a cat (q.v. 21. Anyone here a fan of any specific Radio drama or comedy? My favourites include: Old Harry's Game Andy Hamilton's brilliant comedy set in hell. I'm sorry I havent a Clue Not quite as good since Humph died, but on it's good days it's one fo the funniest things. Chain Reaction Interesting show with celebrities intervieing each other - better than it sounds, the interviewed celebrity gets to choose and interview the next celebrity. The Ubelievable Truth Quiz Game in which the contestants try to smuggle truths through The News Quiz Satirical and amusing News Quiz - I admit not the best decription but strangely accurate The Now Show Political Satire done well by ex-Mary Whitehousers Punt and Dennis amongst others The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939-1944) Radio adventures of Sherlock Holmes starring the legendary pairing of Rathbone and Bruce, one of our favourites for long car journeys Other classics I enjoy include the Original Hitchhikers Guide, Just a Minute and King Street Junior. Anyone else a fan of radio as a medium for drama/comedies ?
  22. Isnt HMV free postage, it always has eben when I've bought there ? Like anything else it depends what you buy and when you buy it HMV has the complete Frasier boxset for 39.99 which is 20 cheaper than anywhere else at the moment, which when you think about it is 50% of the sale price better than anywhere which is a huge saving, really just depends what your looking for.
  23. The reception for in car DAB radio's up here is still really poor, I've had a DAB car stereo for a couple of years and its only in the last few months that I could just about get good enough quality on the move to actually use it, even then I just generally tune into Radio 4 and listen to that
  24. That pretty much sums it up for me, the odd funny moment but generally sub-par Scotland the What, Buff hardie's son is in them i believe. I tend to find it's like Scotland the What but a lot cruder and it sometimes just feels like it's done like that for the sake of it - maybe to differentiate from Scotland the What, rather than to add to the humour. Just bought the new Scotland the What book so looking forward to reading that. I kind of felt that thy just don't have the NE Observational style that Scotland the What has that makes them so much better, a proper understanding of the NE mentality instead of just adding ina doric accent to existing sketches. Someone's done a great video for this: Also can't beat:
  25. Just been speaking to Chris Achilleos asking him if he had any of the original Doctor Who artwork he did which was incredibly iconic but sadly he said that's all gone, I'd love to own dome of that.
