Frosty Jack
O'Donoghues just posted this on the Ab-Mus facebook page. Opinions, anyone? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10205076780571552&set=o.5507682625&type=1&theater

Lemonade
Just what I was about to say. Who's paying a tenner to get in to that gig?

Frosty Jack
I replied to their FB page asking how many bands they expected to sign up. They replied saying this is going on for a whole month "so there's no limit!"They deleted my subsequent reply, and I got a PM saying were happy to answer my questions privately... ca_gere
There hasn't been a good ole pay-to-play rage thread on here in a while. With the prize money, is there a point where it gets worthwhile. e.g. if they're paying out 5 grand to the winner?

Frosty Jack
We entered a battle type deal at Drummonds a few years ago, reluctantly, as it was to get on the bill at some new festival (Seaton park maybe?) Then the festival was cancelled, and the competition carried on for a cash price of 2 grand. So we pulled out.

Lemonade
One of my old bands played one years ago with a "CASH PRIZE!" we got an email a week later saying we'd made it through to the next round and then we never heard from the promoter again. I'm sure all the other bands were told they'd made it through to the next round too. No pay to play but he managed to get four bands to play for free and presumably kept all the door money. fatboy
THEIR SISTER BAR THE ABERGELDIE ON HOLBURN ST, AM PLAYING THERE IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS, I HOPE WE GET PAID
colb
The Abergeldie is right next to my house - keep the fucking noise down............. We entered the Captain Toms/Downstairs/Fat Hippy BoB last year. More for networking and the chance to play some busy gigs than any real desire to win. It was free to enter and we got paid a share of the door for the 3 or 4 gigs we ended up playing. Pretty sure everyone came out of that one happy enough.
Stroopy121
Yeah the CT BOB was an exception, but that wasn't pay to play, and there was a real community spirit with that one I thought. Nobody was being taken advantage of. xx
colb
It's the only one ive ever entered. I assumed most were like that, and the O'Donoghues thing was the exception. I was surprised that a pub like that would even try a BOTB thing - surely they only put on cover bands anyway?
Frosty Jack
Apparently the judges were going to be 'experienced members of our regular bands' - ie from what I can see, the likes of Bash St Kids, Pepperpot, Groove Cruise, and other 'circuit' cover bands... *shudder*
ca_gere
I thought all BOBs were judged using solely an officially licensed Clapometer. The XCerts wouldn't be where they are today had they not pipped Estrella to first prize at the Battle of the Bands at Jumpin' Jacks. That's for sure.
waltz
The whole Battle of the Bands format is fucking terrible. Totally counter-intuitive in 'creating a scene' if there's a competitive element. Don't get it. Nope nope nope.
robkevertson
Jesus bring back the 90s when you got paid or at least Split a pot.
