maud 'dib
I blame the "Aberdeen Sound" which the world can't handle. But, I might be wrong.
Jaaakkkeee
I have noticed a lot of bands playing Aberdeen to death, getting a healthy crowd, venturing outside and getting a real reality check. Can't handle playing to no one. I've also seen bands just not putting in the effort. Will happily be invited to play a gig. But won't ever look for them or ever try. There seems to be loads of bands doing well though.
fatboy
what do you consider as failing not getting signed/becoming famous?
Jaaakkkeee
I'd say a run of a few gigs then nothingness.
fatboy
It really all boils down to each persons individual reasons for playing in a band. A guy who plays guitar, practices once a week, 2 gigs a month as a hobby is a prime example. He wouldn't be failing

neepheid
Same reasons they fail anywhere, I guess. I don't think it's just an Aberdeen based phenomenon. Unless I'm missing your point here.

FatHand
You either have to be innovative or very niche, ahead of the trend on whatever genre that is currently popular or better than all the other acts from everywhere in the world that occupy the same genre or musical space as you. I suspect that due to the small population of Aberdeen an element of competition is missing to really push folk to become the very best. Obviously heaps of practice also helps and is necessary. How many Aberdeen bands practice 5 times a week when they aren't touring or writing/recording?
fertuiee
There is not nearly enough, middle-clarrrse "quirky" solo acoustic performers, mediocre indie bands OR indecipherably heavy bands covered in tattoos with the same haircuts. More please.

Mr Owl PhD
I might be missing the point here, but isn't one of the most commercially successful solo artists of recent years from Aberdeenshire? Or does that not count in whatever this thread is supposed to be about?

ca_gere
a propos de rien (except the last post)... I met a nice psych-folk loving couple here in new york who when they learned I was from scotland their first question was. Do you know 'The Kitchen Cynics'? I think that qualifies as 'made it'

maud 'dib
Aha. to much Merlot not enough explain. I meant fail as in fail to become (blech) culturally significant. Nae in a grand way- just folk generally know a bands tunes. Like the View, or Twilight Sad etc. Seen a fair few bands from Aberdeen over the years that I really thought were at least as good as Idlewild or whatnot. They just seem to gather a bit of momentum then fizzle out. I know Aberdeen is small and a bit remote but it seems a wee bit strange the only folk my mums heard of from Aberdeen are the shamen (love them stillsuits) Annie Lennox and that woman with the sculpted hair do. I forget her name. Sande? "fail" is maybe the wrong word. It's nae like I know anything. Somebody actually paid for a Sidca download and I got ALL emotional.
