Pictures that don't make you laugh, but still say something to you!

Recommended Posts

I'd never heard of Kevin Carter until I heard the Manics sing about him on the Everything Must Go album. I went on to read up and from there I naturally came across this, his most famous, Pulitzer proze winning photo of a vulture stalking a dying child in Sudan. The story of what happened to him is as big a part of the picture as the story of what happened to the child. Harrowing stuff all round.

Have you read The Bang Bang Club? Brilliant book about those photographers and that period in South Africa.

Whats the big deal with it then? Or is it just another veggie, dont kill the animals kinda thing?

I guess what they want to impress upon people is that it's a travesty that these innocent male chicks are a by-product of mass consumerism and that we should all stop consuming things like eggs/chicken etc to stop the cruel death that results from it.

It is cruel. So I try not to think about it. I could never work on a farm. I'd name all the animals and if some butcher came near me I'd fight him to the death.

But if you put it out your mind it's all good.

Also, couldn't the photographer have gave that kid a hand and maybe gave the vulture a swift kick in the nads?

Lol, killing chicks is cruel, kicking vultures isn't. lol.

You should read about it - that's a part of the reason for what went on after it, the idea that rather than helping out and making things better, these guys were just photographing the misery and profiting from it.

Aha okay. Well as long as everyone agrees the photographer was a dickhole.

Well the photographer agreed with that assesment, because he killed himself afterwards. Stood for ages waiting for the vulture to spread his wings so it would make a better photo, even though there was a help centre that he could have driven the boy to just down the road. The debate was whether it was better to spread that image to create awareness or to help the child.

The world's a tough place, get over it.

What the fuck?! I suppose anyone affected by any of these images on this thread should just 'get over it', and if a picture or an issue bothers somebody they should just shut up, eh? If you're as apathetic to it as you claim then you should just shut up and not troll someone who you obviously dislike. Really shit post, Phil.

There's various accounts on what actually happened with that vulture picture. Even Carter himself felt like shite for taking photos of awful things and not helping prevent them. I can't remember his words exactly but he said something after he published the first pictures of 'necklacing' along the lines of it 'if gets people talking about it so it's ok to take these photographs'. He still topped himself later on after struggling with severe depression though.

You have to take into account the situation he was in though. Apartheid ridden, mid 80's South Africa. It was quite a shite place to be. Him,the Bang Bang club and the Johannesburg Star were desperate to expose the brutality of apartheid and the violence that was dominating peoples lives.

I wouldn't say he was a dickhole at all. He helped spread the word about what was going on in South Africa and helped expose the evil acts that were occuring. Sure he could of helped that child if he didn't do so but hell I'd rather get eaten by a vulture than flogged to death whilst wearing a burning tyre.

To be honest Craig i was just posting a similar reaction to his earlier in the thread. At the end of the day though i couldn't give a shit about that particular photo, the others are completely different and judged accordingly and while some do affect me, others don't. So is it really a shit post to have an opinion? Probably not. Consider your eyes dried.

No, but I'd consider a purposefully antagonistic post pretty shit, just as his shut the fuck up one was. A post emphasising how an issue that means a lot to others is absolutely meaningless to you just seems geared to wind people up, that's all.

And I'll just chuck in an obligatory comment about how Jake is a total cunt.

That was the point, to emphasise my point. Why do i bother...

Yeah I got that. Also I basically disagree with your views regarding apathy to animal cruelty, which tbh is probs why I objected so vehemently.

Anyway, PICTURES!

I don't understand your posting of it in reponse to my post but hey.

Moving the fuck on and back on topic.

I remember as a youngster my mate who was and still is quite short was complaining to me about his height. My grandad over heard him and dissappeared through the house and came back with a huge book.

After flicking through the pages he turned the book round to us and showed us the picture above.

It is a photograph of Simo Häyhä, also known as White Death. He is a total fucking badass.

He has 505 sniper kills to his name which is still the record to date. He also has about 200 kills using a submachine on his tally bringing his total to roughly 705. Not bad for someone who measured in at 5 ft3/1.6om. The winter war didn't end well for him. He got shot in the face by an exploding bullet which blew off his left cheek and crushed his jaw. Oocha!

This photograph also reminds me never to fuck with the Finns.

The battle of Killer Hill in the Kolla region saw 32 plucky Finns taking on over 4000 Soviet troops and fucking winning. They would go about in pairs on skis at night time and attack Soviet camps. Incredible.

Here's a link to the wikipedia page about him Simo Häyhä

Some good stuff posted in here so far. I still get upset every time I look at the picture of the Sudanese child and the vulture.

I think what I find so very affecting about the picture Ewan posted is that it so starkly shows the incredibly harsh, cold reality of the commercialism of the food industry, and without being some super stylised over-the-top PETA type image. Living beings as resources and units.

This is a male baby chick, in his last moment on earth. Below him is a giant grinder into which he will fall alive because he hatched male, and is therefore useless to the egg industry.

His fate is shared by 200 million baby male chicks every year.

Compassionate people should be allowed to adopt the chicks so they can live.

Was it on Emmerdale Farm?
Get it right!

actually .... its Esholt, near Baildon, Shipley, ... Yorkshire TV originally filmed "Emerdale" village there ... but now have a purpose built replica of Esholt as an outdoor set at the studios !

Coz its the original place, Esholt is thronged wi people every summer, wanting to see it .... I was there piping for their pleasure (and making a fair bit of money doing so) ... the tourists were being filmed that day for Yorks TV's "Calendar" news program, and they did a small piece about me piping outside "Emerdale's Woolpack Pub"

(small interesting fact : Although the name has been changed now to capitalise on the Emerdale connection, the pub was actually called "The Commercial Inn")

..... and the thinly disguised "Hotton" in the soap, is actually filmed in Otley, where I grew up !

cool story bro !
