Olafur Arnalds + Greg Haines + Finn @ The Tunnels

Recommended Posts

Dizzy Storm & Interesting Music Promotions are very pleased to announce the return of the beautiful OLAFUR ARNALDS to Aberdeen :) and to bring to you the following fantastic line up of artists

Olafur Arnalds

Hailing from Iceland, Olafur Arnalds combines classical instrumentation with an indie-rock aesthetic to produce beautiful, fragile, emotional, classical indie music. Although with obvious comparisons to Sigur Ros who he supported throughout Europe this summer, Arnalds continues to sculpt his own epic, string-laden compositions

Beautiful in the same way the Arctic is

Greg Haines

With the current trend for modern classical/electronic records there is no shortage of cinematic and emotional music - we have Max Richter, Ryan Teague and Sylvain Chauveau holding aloft the torch, but Greg Haines produces something which is somehow more nave, warmer and in parts even more visual.

Finn

Finn is the work of German singer/songwriter, multi- instrumentalist, conceptionist, visual artist and fashion designer Patrick Zimmer. With influences that span decades, he makes beautiful, haunting, mesmerising songs that make a striking impression on all who hear them.

Preview in The Skinny

Olafur Arnalds @ The Tunnels, 22 Oct :: The Skinny

Christmas did come early the first time I heard Arnalds last autumn. His haunting melodies have the ability to bring out childhood memories while easing modern strains like only your mothers sweet lullabies could do. A suffocating comfort in music is rare, but something that the musicians of Iceland seem to etch straight from the life and geography of their homeland. Classical music is re-packaged but delicately opened up to a new audience by Arnalds. He mixes lo-fi electronic loops and samples alongside his accompanying string quartet while his drifting keys and arrangements defy the fact hes still in his early 20s. This edgy romantic weaves a rich musical tapestry which will work wonderfully in the caverns of The Tunnels; so be sure to go, and dont forget to fill a stocking with new album Variations of Static. Is the STFU rule being reinforced for this?

It's pretty intimidating when no-one talks at a gig. Though, it is quite nice.

Hmmm

It's pretty fucking hard to actually enforce anything like that. It's probably more intimidating when people are shouting over the music and paying customers are noticeably pissed off with it.

At the recent Pictish Trail gig I kind of regret having a real go at someone who was being particularly obnoxious and was spoiling the experience for a few folk.

On the other hand, we also spoke about not enforcing it enough at Stars of The Lid when a couples of gypes were being overly loud during a pretty serene set.

I dunno

I really dunno.

It is nice when it does happen though.

Hmmm

below is what is stated in the contract...hopefully people will be as courteous as at the Peacocks gig last year...i will make polite signs to make people aware i think :)

MISC.

lafur Arnalds performance is very quiet. For example the sound that occurs when you open a can of soda can be double the volume of the performance. So please keep the following in mind:

If there is a bar inside the concert hall, please ask the bar staff to try to be extremely quiet and refrain from using loud equipment like expresso machines or coctail makers.

Please ask latecomers to enter the room quietly, and maybe even only during applause or between songs.

Please also try to make sure that there are no other things that could disturb the performance for example: hardcore bands playing in the next room, slamming doors, etc.
