if you could start up a project or business to do with the music industries what would it be???

ive got to do a project for uni and we have to have 5 ideas for monday and im struggling so wanted to see what others come up with. ive got a few ideas which i may go with but as ive got to present 5 im stumped.

this has to be something viable because i have actually got to do this and go apply for grants and stuff if i need the cash

it can be anything from starting a record company to setting up a company who does merch for bands.

but it has to have a unique selling proposition

You could kidnap the next Mcfly boyband, and hold them to ransom.

Payable by their record co, but before you hand them back,

Behead the band Nick Berg stylee,

Film the whole thing and sell the movie...

club night would count

someone from my course a few years back thought up of the idea for a night called Your Sound, it then led on to her being employed by DF concerts and now king tuts run Your Sound on the first sunday of every month

see thing is, everyone and anyone can start up a small label or a promotions company. but its not unique. it needs to have something special about it. or ill fail.

its stressing me out already. i keep coming up with ideas like a gig guide for ayrshire. but it has to be something that id make money from. and i cant see people paying for a gig guide.

I don't know if this is relevant or has been done yet, but how about blue tooth for your ipod. Maybe a small earphone that isn't obvious and then you could sit in lectures or boring meetings and listen to your ipod without anyone knowing.

or a beamer thingy that allows all the ipods in the same room to listen to the same tracks. It could either be a gig recording so that everyone is "the audience" or everyone chooses 5 tracks and then we can all listen to each others music.

or what about a dodgy rewards card. This would have to be country wide, the more gigs you go to, the more points you get, then when someone popular comes in to town (like the kooks or the automatic) those regular gig goers have special reward tickets so that they can get tickets if a gig sells out really quickly to johnny come latelys. Thinking about it, the pilot scheme could be in aberdeen and if you go to 50 gigs in a year, you are guarenteed one free ticket to any gig. It might increase attendance to smaller gigs and reward us loyal gig going folk.

sometimes I'm amazed at my own brilliance. All you need now is a name for the card....gigtar... and it could be shaped like a guitar. gigtar/guitar. My humour is lost on you folks.

that gig card thing is quite a good idea but rather than a free ticket it could be used to combat touts. some kind of gig membership card could give you access to pre-release tickets for major tours, perhaps at a discounted rate depending on other tickets purchased. i'm sure touts would still use this to their own ends but it would cut down on it a bit and hopefully get more tickets to those that deserve them.

i dont mean i fail this week for not having 5 ideas that aint been done before

but ill fail if my final business isnt anything different

one of the main critera is that it has to have a USP

this has been stressing me out sooo much

apparently there is no music scene in ayr. everyone plays glasgow. and ive got no clue about glasgows music scene at all.

Building a music scene in Ayr is your USP

What does Glasgow do, or any other city for that matter. You have a many templates to work on. If there is no music scene in Ayr then you have a blank canvass, no? :)

yeah. the more i think about gig nights in ayr the more i warm to the idea.

everyone has just said, oh there isnt any gigs in ayr so we go to glasgow

but the problem is lack of venue

the club i work in is the only place that ever puts on gigs apart from some church. but it aint a good venue.

im gona arrange a meeting with my boss and ask him stuff like if i can still hire it for free and what they do abotu PA. cause i know the glasgow furys are really bad with money

there ain't no venue at T in the park until they build it. How about a moveable venue. All you need is a field/park. T on the road, so to speak.

you'd need to make it variable in size 'cos if you were doing a gig for Belle and Sebastian loads of folk would want to go, but if it was get cape wear cape fly, then less folk.

festivals are very common now, so folk are used to seeing gigs in tents. If you could make a name for yourself, then you could rent out the tent at some of the festivals. Infact, if you had a team that was specialised in putting up the tent, doing pa etc then you could rent yourself out for tours. Coming to a field near you Cathys tent extravaganza.
