Following their success with last years 30th Anniversary production of The Yeomen of The Guard the student members of The University of Aberdeen Gilbert & Sullivan Society return to the stage of the Arts Centre. The Gondoliers, or, The King of Barataria, was the twelfth opera written together by Gilbert and Sullivan. Opening on December 7, 1889 at the Savoy Theatre, The Gondoliers ran for 554 performances, and was the last of the G&S operas that would achieve wide popularity. Its lilting score has, perhaps, the most sparkling and tuneful music of them all. With well loved songs such as the tenor showstopper Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes, the clever In A Contemplative Fashion and the joyous and energetic Cachucha this tale of mistaken identity, romance, republicanism and royalty is a masterpiece of comic opera and an entertainment perfectly suited, set as it is in warm Mediterranean climes, to the dreich chill of an Aberdeen winter. Wednesday - Friday 19.30 Sat 14.30 & 19.30 Tickets available from Aberdeen Box Office and Aberdeen Arts Centre.
