  1. Although I've never been able to test my theory I think musicians wearing earplugs is generally a bad idea. I'm sure that with the cheaper ones the backline and monitoring have to go up to compensate for the loss of mid to highs in the performers hearing, which just basically sticks a big middle finger up to everyone else's hearing. Simplest solution, turn it down. I'd also like to extend a big thank you to every bastard who thumps their snares, plays guitar/bass etc when my ears are inches from the sound source. There is no need for it (unless you're in the middle of a song) you twonks.
  2. It's a hazer, not a dry-ice machine, there's a very big difference. Just be glad it's not a smoke machine.
  3. It's been a while since I was in but I reckon there's no way they're 5M wide (looking round my flat and knowing how big it is) but I could be wrong. We'll split the difference and call them 4x6.
  4. If it's not sold out :: The Wizard Festival :: Tickets
  5. It's only because they're scrapping the intertoto. And cloud, we'd need to get into 8th place for an extra european place and that's not likely to happen so enjoy the moment.
  6. I saw it when it was opium and downstairs was a real mess. Iirc Eric told me he estimated 9 months to get the arches open again so maybe it's worse than I remember.
  7. It shut down. The guy went bust, partly due to him trying to do the place up without planning permission then running out of time and money for the retrospective planning permission he did get which had a 6 month limit on it.
  8. I can't stop picturing your head on the body of an excited puppy when I read that. Tunnels are buying Drummonds, as far as I'm aware the deal is done and the keys should be handed over early September. Eric is buying Esko but has no plans to put on bands. I thought this was common knowledge but obviously not.
  9. It's time to start believing in scurrilous internet rumour.
  10. It could also mean an acoustic is too quiet, which is what I've found when I mic up acoustics in a live situation. Even with a solo act it's almost impossible to get a miked acoustic loud enough to overcome the background chatter in most venues. There are a lot of other reasons as well (using the wrong mic comes fairly low in the list) which I'll not bore you with, physics and stuff.
  11. looks like that didn't last long http://www.aberdeen-music.com/forums/networking/50238-up-coming-bands-required.html
  12. I've never forgiven him for calling Queen's Road Queen's Street. I read the first one while I was travelling and it was alright for that purpose but I've never had the urge to read it again because I don't think I would manage to finish it if I did.
  13. Captain Tom's At a guess, their rooms are approx 3Mx5M MUSICAL VISION LTD // ONLINE // REHEARSING I've only poked my head in the door of one room here but I think it's slightly smaller at around 3Mx4M. aberdeen foyer music Yet again I've only ever poked my head in the door but it seems quite cramped compared to the other two. .:Transition Extreme | Extreme in Aberdeen :. I've never been here but the rooms look comparable to CT/MV in size from the photos on the website. All except Transition are city centre so if you're bussing it they'll be close enough to walk from your stop. If you prefer using your own gear and you want to rehearse more than 4-5 hours a week there are also some band-run studios but they're more word of mouth so you'd need to ferret them out once you're here (and normally have to wait for a band to "die" before one was available).
  14. I'm pretty sure it's just Buggles,in fact that could possibly be the first time I've ever heard (alright, seen) them referred to as 'The' Buggles.
  15. I agree with Tooms, a s/h 1210 in full working order will probably set you back around the 180-200 (new around 340ish) mark and the mixer can be picked up new for around 200 so around 100 seems about right. aim for 550, be happy with 500 and settle for 450 if you have to would be my advice.
  16. The market has changed mate, much less people can get mortgages so rental prices are shooting up *rubs hands with glee*. I've been told by letting agents that I'll get 650+ for my 2 bed flat (and that was before redecorating and fitting a new kitchen) I think you're right about not shitting in their own nest though, everyone I know who stays in the council flats here has never had a problem.
  17. It was (in my personal opinion, but that is of little use) constructive criticism. If he'd only stated that the band didn't float his boat that would be opinion, stating how they might manage to achieve the launch of the aforementioned vessel on Lake Alkaline is constructive. Even if it just makes them stop and think for one second about whether they were tight enough or not then it's done a lot more than anyone making excuses for them will. It was a tad harsh maybe but you can't make an omelette...
  18. Oh Alan, that was poor even by your low standards.
  19. After seeing people jump on Alkaline for sharing his constructive criticism about the band I think I now understand why the feedback forum doesn't get too much posts. Surely it's up to the band to decide whether the direction he's suggesting is the "right" direction or not. Disagree if you want but don't jump on him for having an opinion on an entirely subjective matter when his intentions are obviously not malicious. Wrapping bands up in cotton wool does more harm than good imo.
  20. I don't have any speakers or 'phones at the moment but iirc a generous person would call that an instrumental middle 8. I'm not particularly generous. I blame The Beatles, "A Day in the Life" just gave unimaginative fuckwits a licence to shoehorn unrelated bits of music into the same song.
  21. Do you mean pieces where the guitar part actually carries the main melody line somewhere in it? I mean pieces of music where what the soloist, and quite often the entire band, play something which bears absolutely no relation to the piece that they're played in.
  22. Any "solo" that lasts more than 16 bars incurs the same hatred that fascism/racism gets from me (not really, but you get what I mean), unless it has a point in the song and isn't just "look at me, I'm better than him" wank. Pity I've got a job where I have to suffer them at times.
  23. I know who my friends are, I have no idea why other people would want to.
  24. You dissin' my 'hood bro? Yeah, my security doors knackered but it's never a problem, except for the fucking mormons.
