  1. I don't think they're aimed at the student market. They look like they're made for someone who needs to keep in touch and do some light computing on the move but have a PC at home/the office on which they do most of their work. I imagine students would benefit most from the less portable but much more powerful laptop. From what I remember of my brief investigation of these things you do get less bang for your buck compared to laptops, the only reason they're in the tempting range financially is because some bright spark has finally figured out that if you tell M$ where to stick its OS and install Linux instead you can make the price much more attractive.
  2. I don't think anyone round here is an expert on the acoustic properties of suitcases so you're probably going to have to experiment. Filling it with jackets is just going to kill the resonance which I'm guessing is not what you're after. Unfortunately I can't think of any way to increase the bassiness of your suitcase without either porting (cutting holes of a carefully calculated diameter in the suitcase) or getting a bigger suitcase.

    DJ Mr Yogi

Out of all the people in the world to choose to ask about Elbow... I couldn't name a single song by Elbow but I feel as if I've known them all my life just through being in the same room as Yogi more than once.
  4. Did Fergie not have a poor first few years at Man U though, flirted with relegation at one point I think. When I look at where MK Dons are today I've got to wonder how much of Ince's success with them was down to squad and how much was down to managerial ability.
  5. Ah, it's the Trouper doing the PA. It'll be a cold day in hell when he doesn't go into a gig like this fully prepared. I'll need to go and buy a hat, just so I can take it off., you seems to pretty much have all the angles covered.
  6. Everything except drums will need to be line checked in my experience, e.g. if you go from a finger-playing passive bass to a pick-playing active bass without a quick line check you'll be picking shreds of bass speaker off the dancefloor for the rest of the night. Sounds like you're planning on changing the entire backline at least once, maybe you should look to add 5 minutes to those changeovers. Spare backline, guitars, cables, skins etc would be another good idea. I'd also advise having a separate monitor engineer. The FOH position will be so far away from stage that communication will be difficult, problem solving will take longer if the engineer has to run back and fore from the stage and it puts an immense amount of pressure on the FOH engineer asking them to do 15 bands AND their monitors in those conditions. Most importantly, make sure the crew/engineers who don't have time to go and eat are fed and watered.(OK, it's maybe not the most important thing but it seems pretty damn important when you're starving 10 bands into a 15 band gig).
  7. Ah, 2 stages, then it all makes sense. Some words of advice: You don't have any real "fuck-up time" in there (unless you get a 1 am) so you're going to need a complete bastard of a stage manager (I'd offer but I'm pretty sure I won't be available). Most bands if you tell them they have a 30 minute set will give you a 30-35 minute set. You need to make it clear to all bands before they sign up that they will be expected to play 30 mins maximum, i.e. aim for 25 minutes and if you run over a little bit then no one gets stressed. Since Calum Underkills seems to like arithmetic he can tell you how much you'll overrun if you give these bands even 3 minutes extra each and believe me, once you lose time at one of these sort of things it's very difficult to claw it back without having to cut sets down. I'd also advise you to have 2 backline crew per stage, one for the drums and one for amps. These guys will help the last band strip their gear and help the next one set up. You've got to remember that it's not just 15 mins to change over, it's 15 mins to changeover and line check. In a pig of a room. With tired engineers. Far form having a pop at you, I was trying to get more info so I could maybe give you the benefit of my experience.I could have just said "How are you planning to fit 30 bands on one stage in 12 hours?" but where's the fun in that. You've known me long enough and shouldn't really expect any less (more?).
  8. That's the way record deals work though, the record companies LEND you some money, you have to pay all expenses AND pay them back the loan. This is normally quite tricky as well because the record company skims a pile of cash off the top of your earnings, then your manger skims 20+% off of what's left etc etc. Still, 150K for a years work isn't shabby. It's a pity Cowell will probably earn 50 times that when you take into account what he gets paid for the show, phone lines etc etc. It also wouldn't surprise me if these expenses include paying top dollar for recording studios, management companies etc that Cowell owns. Double ch-ching.
  9. o_O You got Clark Kent in to do the changeovers have you?
  10. Yeah, fucking hilarious. I bet the cleaners were pissing themselves laughing the next day and thanking whatever god they believe in for the chance to clear up the mess of local "rock gods" AND get paid minimum wage for the privilege
  11. If I were in Cobra Kai or The Marionettes I wouldn't worry about those Get In Get Out chaps, an Andrex puppy with a sore paw could take them.
  12. If you have a spare channel on the mixer you could use the current mic for the more high-end stuff (percussion) and get a separate mic for suitcase/vocals. Something along the lines of a SM58 would do you fine.
  13. In my experience a dry solder does the opposite, i.e. thin, low volume then suddenly spring back to life, normally by applying more current (i.e. turning it up) Sounds more like a pot problem, especially since moving the pot fixes it when the pot is already at max.
  14. Chelsea only have to win if Roma lose, otherwise any old score will do. And who'd bet against Italians playing for a draw?
  15. Live American Football on TV - Sport on Television - Live American Football on TV
  16. Any band that tries to rhyme "groovy" with "duvet" should be avoided. clue: It's the hussys.
  17. live/neutral switched fuse bypassed by nail* no earth connection screw missing from earth terminal* cable grip not on outer sheath I'm not sure what the 6th one is. The little nick in the live and the messy neutral wire are both sloppy but not dangerous. EDIT: The live wire is too long, if that pops out it's long enough to reach the ground terminal. *No prizes for killing people and/or destroying equipment I'm afraid.
  18. That is correct. If I remember my school chemistry it's because graphite is made up of lot's of sheets of graphite, which are quite strong in themselves, but they slip past other graphite sheets easily. A sort of solid lubricant. It's a technique I've heard a lot of but I don't think I've ever met anyone who does it. Mind you, what people use to lubricate their nuts rarely comes up in conversation.* *I had to say it, it's the law.
  19. There's dispute over whether we did. There are suspicions of theft for the telephone and what we think of now as television was invented by an American, JLB's mechanical system was never going anywhere. Invention of the telephone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Who is the inventor of television?
  20. Decent enough article but personally I use the 12th fret harmonic instead of the fretted 12th. They fail to mention that you have to slacken off the string before adjusting the bridge or the tension will sometimes stop the saddle from moving. Unfortunately I've had to do that for every bass/guitar I've set up (especially wire-wound strings, you sometimes don't have to with unwound strings) turning it into a bit of a tune->check->detune->adjust marathon. To the OP: Try setting the intonation again using the method Chris linked to and my suggestions (and the best tuner you can beg/borrow/steal). If the intonation is still out you might have truss rod issues* (or shit neck issues) so maybe splashing some cash to get everything sorted at the same time is the best option. If you're going to buy a new nut anyway why not try the super-glue method first, nothing to lose if you're throwing it away. *I wouldn't recommend tackling the truss rod yourself
  21. I was told that once a police officer (not a PC either, one of the higher-uppies) grabbed a member of bar staff by the neck and pinned them against a wall for daring to suggest that it was the police's problem if the kids were getting pissed on the streets since the venue has no control of them there. If that's the attitude of the police then it's easy to see why there are relatively few 14+ gigs on.
  22. You are using a computer. If it's yours, problem solved. Become the new Stripey!
  23. You forgot to add the cost of staffing, training, maintenance, repair, regular calibration etc to get these things working. Staffing would be a big cost, especially if door staff don't have the powers to search and hold someone. (Do they?). And of course there's the 2% drop in turnover (1% for false positives and 1% for their spouses/partners/friends who also don't enter the premises). Mmm, I can see most of Aberdeen's pub owners being delighted at the thought of forking out money to reduce their income and increase their costs. (That's not to mention all the other costs of false positives, e.g. someone gets a false positive on a works night out gets repeatedly passed by for promotion or laid off cos the boss thinks they might be doing drugs)
  24. So in layman's terms that means there's a fair chance that over half the people searched had no connection with illegal drugs but still had to submit to a search. I would call that a basic violation of human rights myself, and I agree with Flash that it's one small step down a very dangerous road. What's next, forcing people who have failed this test to sew badges on their clothes?
