Quite a useful way of learning is to record what you are playing - choose a song you like and just solo over the top of it. Then listen back to it a few times with a critical ear. Some of it is likely to be cringeworthy, but you'll find some licks that you like so file them in your repertoire! I learned pretty quickly that I was overplaying sometimes needed to just lay back a bit:up: (BTW - I'm talking about bass playing)

Shamelessly rip off your influences and hope nobody notices:up: If you know your scales, then making up a solo should be no problem. The blues and pentatonic scales are probably the best place to start, but before you can break the rules you need to know them - eg why certain notes work over certain chords etc. Experiment......

Should you raise a bass combo off the floor so it's nearer ear level on stage if you are playing with a full PA? I can't seem to get a satisfactory answer - some say that decent combos are designed to work with the floor, and others say you should raise it up despite bass being omnidirectional. Confused.....

I was getting might pissed off with my Warwick Streamer LX Jazzman as I coudn't get a low B string to fit through the bridge, and had a pile of low B's sitting at home which were useless to me, so I fired off a complaint to Warwick. Fully expected not to hear back from them, but go an email from the vice president of Warwick explaining that I should be using tapered strings and they were sending me out some of their new EMP string guage of my choice. Look at the lines round the Top Gear track that The Stig uses - they are totally different to the lines that the F1 drivers, past or present use, so I reckon that it's unlikely to be an F1 driver. Maybe rally or touring car driver?
