1. What is 'ideal music' please? 2. Are all kinds of music compromised if they are, or become popular? 3. Do drummers only provide rhythm? 4. How pure do notes have to be, to still be music? 5. Is there a list of acceptable instruments and note purity levels available anywhere? I can't believe I didn't know any of this...

Fuxake... Another reason to hate Dundee. I've been waiting for this for months, they were meant to be playing a month ago or so ago as well, weren't they? Please can you get Martin Stephenson sometime soon to make up for it? I have a contact if you need it.

Nothing to do with singing, it's all about the guitar tone as far as I know. Tuning down makes the strings a bit twangier and more resonant to give a bigger tone. Stevie Ray Vaughan did exactly the same, always tuned down to Eb. Maybe easier to do those huge bends too. I'm pretty sure this is true, but I'm a drummer so it's not my fault if it's bollocks...

It's not too bad, but highly ironic that the P&J are writing about how the local music scene being ignored... The article has that really annoying P&J patronising tone - "You'll never guess, but some of our NE youngsters play in bands, with instruments and everything..." You'll not be suprised to hear that The Score feature quite heavily, with Aly Gray getting a couple of columns to himself. Good for Tom though.

He can sing in F, but not in E? One Semitone makes that much difference? I bought a placebo album once. Cover was exactly the same, CD looked the same, cost me the same, but there was no music on it. Still like it though, for some reason...

He did indeed. 1st time I saw them, and that was one of several things about them that impressed me.

Biz is the king of the obscure heckle. It is always well meant as far as I know. There's a fine line between comedy heckling and abuse though.

My old band used to get the crowd to shout out any three chords, and we'd improvise a song round them. Sometimes sounded awful, like getting G, A and Bb or something, but sometimes it was great and it was always fun. It's good to challenge yourself. Improvising's also a great way to learn how to play in a band. First time I played in public was at the Blues Jams in the Drift Inn, and they were fucking terrifying. You'd get "12 bar in A, quite fast" barked at you, then you were off. If you couldn't keep up, you were laughed out the door. Excellent apprenticeship.

Make every take a performance. Don't just concentrate on playing every single note right, it'll just sound lifeless. Put some feeling into it and you can hear the difference. If you don't put the energy in, the listener won't get any out. Have fun.
