HairyScaryMark
i don't know all the details' date=' but isn't the issue that he's saying he DIDN'T do all that shaggin, and is alleging libel against the newspaper?.[/quote']yesso if he really did do it' date=' that makes him no better than lord archer.[/quote']noLord Archer got a prison sentence for lying in court. Tommy Sheridan is not being accused of a crime, he is in court to clear his name, with the claim that the news of the world printed lies about him.It appears that he probably didn't do what he was accused of and there is little or no evidence to say he did. spellchecker
yesnoLord Archer got a prison sentence for lying in court. Which he committed as a witness in his libel case against the Daily Star, which was a civil trial also. Lord Archer was also in court to clear his name - and won his case. It was later proven that he had lied in his libel case, which is why the perjury case came about. My point was that if it is later found out (or had been proven in this case) that Tommy Sheridan lied in this libel case, he too would be liable to be prosecuted for committing perjury. Michael MacLennan
I thought the News of the Screws only had to prove that it was "substantially true" or summat? No' date=' that's not the case for defamation, though that is what they said about the article. The problem is that, even if 'substantially' true, those parts that aren't true - if they lower him in the eyes of the public - would be defamatory. It appears that he probably didn't do what he was accused of and there is little or no evidence to say he did.It doesn't appear that way; it appears that some parts can't be relied upon, but to believe that 18 independent witnesses would perjure themselves in court... well, I wouldn't be surprised if the appeal reverses the verdict (or at least substantially reduces the damages). I don't think it would have been the same result if it wasn't in front of a jury, though I think the News of the World were very unwise to advance the argument in court that what they said was 'substantially true'; not least because it already implies that they're not telling the truth about some parts. eat your parents
Particularly when he addressed the court as "brothers and sisters" in his 80 minute closing summary!Sheridan is renowned for doing that though. His use of political communication is pretty good, he manages and wields the "mob" well. His stunt up in Aberdeen (which was purely pointless, simply media hungry and provoking a crowd reaction in my opinion) when the Queen passed through displayed this. He addressed everyone as brothers and sisters, and then managed to deliver a speech which had certain members of the public shouting out Sex Pistol quotes.I agree with some of the things he stands for, and have to admire the way he can manipulate coverage. Or is that not valid in this case?

A number of papers considered running the story regarding Archer, however none of them thought they could afford the repercussions that could ensue a possible libel case - The Daily Star thought otherwise... Guest DustyDeviada
So will the appeal be decided by a jury as well? 'Cause if it's decided by judges I think he could be in trouble. And would he then be liable for the costs of the appeal AND the original trial?
Guest Jake Wifebeater
Things'll be pretty interesting in the SSP now. If Tommy runs for leadership, he'll rout Colin Fox. I can see Fox quitting, along with Rosie Kane and Carolyn Leckie, collectively the "unsavoury cabal". We'll come out of it the better, though.Darn shame, Carolyn Leckie's pretty tasty. Frosty Jack
We'll come out of it the better' date=' though.[/quote']Do you think so, or do you think the public image of the party has been irreparably damaged? You'd agree that whatever the outcome, it has hardly been a great advert for a serious national political party.

The only reason this got so much publicity is because we're a hard-left party, and big business has a vested interest in doing all it can to suppress it. Just a cheap smear campaign by the gutter press, fuck them for the muppets they've been shown to be.And it's been a hell of a lot of publicity, too. That's probably the appeal, getting a bit fed up of picking up young bints at Fortress Weep.

delboy
tommy sheridan is on george galloways talksport radio show tonight from 8-10 PM, could be an interesting listen....dunno what all the fuss is about, its not like he's breaking the law if the alleged incidents took place
Chris
I don't think it's been a great advert for the SSP. To my eyes the whole thing has resulted in the SSP looking like the old cliche of infighting, hypocritical socialists of old, full of python-esque "splitters". Which is a shame. I'd hate to see the party disintegrate over this and I hope the damage can be repaired in time for the elections next year.

Sam_b
The same as SSP members can't understand why people would want New Labour running it....
Guest Jake Wifebeater
Colin Fox - Is calling for unity within the party. Of course he is, he's fucking bricking it now that Tommy Sheridan has said there's an "at least 50/50 chance" of him running for SSP leadership.Rosie Kane - Has stated she can never work w/Tommy Sheridan again. Lator!Carolyn Leckie - Has remained silent so far, and continues to mysteriously draw me towards her effortlessly. She will be mine one day. This is going to run and run for weeks. Received a 12-page A4 missive today, detailing the "other side" of the story. That'll be read over tomorrow's Joe. Crazy days.
delboy
sadly sheridan himself wasnt on george galloway's radio show last night (contractual reasons) but he covered the whole thing in full, didnt really know too much about it as naturally it hasnt been given as much coverage in the rest of the UK as scotland. galloway kept referring to the news of the world as 'sewer rats' which amused me.
