french_disko
Didn't realise any of these albums were rated by anyone.they're simply big sellers by the look of it.
lepeep
I get what you're saying & generally agree with you' date=' as per usual. But surely it can only be overrated if it is highly regarded by critics already?"Everything Ecstatic" got good reviews but they were hardly gushing or praising it to high heavens. I'd say most people are agreement with you - it was disappointing. An "overrated" album is one that continually appears in "Top 100 Greatest Albums Since The Stone Age" list or something similar. A few of the albums been mentioned here seem to be down to personal taste (ie, dislike of the artist) rather than starting a backlash in reponse to reviews or generally held opinion (eg - Marillion - who the f*ck rates any work by them as a "great album" anyway?). Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, there are a few albums that are regarded as "sacred cows" (astral weeks, revolver, blonde on blonde) or as great within their genre (loveless, it takes a nation of millions to hold us back) - surely these are the sort of albums that we should be discussing & dissecting rather than Aerosmith's "Pump"?[/quote']it is interesting...I guess there are two types of ever rated then!one, personal (I was told it was amazing...but it's so so)two, expected (the masses decide that an LP is "a benchmark", and (you, I , we) disagree.I'd say that the latter, would all depend on taste, and we'd just end up in a shitstorm (slagging off tastes is pointless)...so, I'd have to stick with my original post to define the "rules" of what you think is an overrated lp, you have to be objectivally critical ...sounds quite wanky, eh....nae like me... Do you think in some instances that if you repeat something enough (in this case, how great an album is) then it simply becomes truth? It's like the Emporers New Clothes - it's gonna take a brave person to stand up and say "Actually, The White Album was a pile of wank". Another thing with critically aclaimed albums is that they simply don't stand the test of time - something that was relevant in 1968 may sound dated today; something that was technoligcally advanced in 1991 may sound as futuristic as a Sinclair C5 now. Does that make them overrated though? Maybe i'm just over-analysing what should simply be a tongue in cheek thread, I don't know...... french_disko
Ok, I'm going to contribute to this list rather than over-analyze it - I'm going to say the new Dragonforce album. I don't know what it's called. I haven't heard it. I don't even know if it exists. But everyone that saw them in Moshulu last night seems to be raving about them but I consider them to be overrated Heavy Metal bollocks that only spotty virgins would like. Or I would if I ever heard them.** Stands back and waits for the flack **
weaver
Iron Maiden - Powerslave + Number Of The Best are always the two pointed out as being there best albums, however Bruce Dickinson wrecks anything he touches - their first album is a record of unadultered genius and all the rest were patchy reworkings of the same song with shit operatic vocals. Run To The Hills? Fuck off.

Jammer
That may be a bit over the top but it did have Ob La Di Ob La Da on it which is one of the biggest musical crimes ever. There are thousands of songs worse than that. Jeez it's just a bit of fun.The dated thing does of course matter but the likes of The Beatles and Beach Boys tend to leap out of their peers efforts (lyrically and sonically although I don't like the snare sound on the White album!). Time does tend to seperate the wheat from the chaff though.I'd like to put these into the mixVelvet Underground + NicoREM - Automatic For the PeopleThe Who - TommySmall Faces - Ogdens Nut Gone FlakeLed Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti

I haven't heard it. ** Stands back and waits for the flack **How can you under/over rate an album you haven't ACTUALLY HEARD yourself and thus not form a valid opinion on? There's a difference between 'overrated', and 'overhyped' - though that still doesn't apply in this case seeing as there was no thread on this board wanking over the last DF album, AND prior to all the threads regarding Moshulu gig, the last thing posted would have been my review of one of their gigs a full year ago?..........(Oh, on the topic - any Radiohead album.......) jester1470
In Utero is the best Nirvana record' date=' but I wouldn't say that Nevermind is overrated.Discussing with workmates, we have come up with:PJ Harvey ~ Stories by the city, stories by the seaOasis - definatley maybeBeatles ~ Sgt. The others are just big sellers, as someone said that there is a difference between peoples tatse and something being rated universally as a classic, therefore overated.CheersStuart

Its not a patch on "The Who Sell Out" or even "A Quick One" which are littered with moments of pop genius.Somebody else mentioned "Astral Weeks" and I'd have to agree - it sounds rambling and unfocused to my ears. I far prefer "Moondance".
conor82
overrated albumsIn Utero far exceeds Nevermind, Nevermind for all its' poppy gloriousness is nothing in comparison to In Uteros' mindless self-induced 'fuck me I'm a wanker' lyrics and its distorted 'golden showeresque' guitar chords.Other overrated in comparision records include Weezer 'Blue' album (which incidently is great) but in comparision to Pinkerton is like like Joan Collins spread Eagle with her muff out screaming take me now you dirty sailor bastard and then claiming she is the virgin Mary. Also anything by Oasis makes me wish life was so easy that the Janitor hadn't caught me with the noose. Damn Janitors, they should know their place.
Taylor_dB
It's discussions like this which remind me why I bother to check this forum...Nevermind starts off ok, but it throws you the best of it right at the start and once you're past the main stuff I tend to switch off and not care anymore. In Utero doesn't do that, it's consistantly strong through out, yet lives in the shadows of Nevermind. Owning a copy of Nevermind is now more a fashion statement to say "I like rock music, and I like Nirvana and think Kurt Cobain was a genious!" which translates into "I'm so clich, but I don't care because by showing my love for Nirvana people now pretend to like me because I like the same music."OK Computer was a really good album, however, I have to agree with the majority on this one.You want to talk about overrated then talk about "Load" and "Reload". I know you're probably thinking that they didn't get good reviews, but no matter how bad the review were, it was still overrating them. I'm too tired. Advisors appointment tomorrow! Woo! Guest DustyDeviada
There is quite a lot of wank on The White Album, Revolution No. 9 for instance, does anybody really wat to listen to that? That song that Ringo sings, "let's all have a nice story" or something, crap as well.I'm with George Martin who reckoned it would have been better to have one ace single album than pad it out to a double. Typical McCartney whimsical pish ranking alongside The Frog Chorus and Mull Of Kintyre.

Willum
Megadeth- The World needs a hero. The single "Moto-psycho" was terrible.I wouldn't call it an overrated album, as it's not very rated highly at all. Dread and The Fugitive Mind is awesome though. As for overated albums, Coldplay's new one. I had to listen to it several times, it's much rubbishness.
