overated albums

they've been running this on six music at the mo, i've a couple both records i like but i think are way overated...

Radiohead - OK Computer

i know this choice will no doubt make me some enemies but the critics have been creaming over this one since it was released back in 1997. i dont think its as good as pablo honey or the bends, some of ok computer is extremely patchy, sure it has it moments but it set the trend for radiohead albums from this point onwards e.g. some thrilling moments laced with large chunks of self indulgent twaddle.

the beatles - sgt pepper

yeah sure its the beatles at their supposed peak but its not as good as abbey road, rubber soul, the white album or revolver though i suppose they could all fall into the category of being overated. i always felt the beatles were a better singles band anyway.

Radiohead - OK Computer

Have to agree with you delboy. OK Computer is a great album, but to me The Bends is the best Radiohead album. It took me weeks to get into but it was worth it in the end. Every song is a classic whereas OK has a couple of patchy moments.

Metallica - The Black Album

Loved this album when it was first released but it soon wore off. A few weak songs on it and to me Metallica reached their peak with Master Of Puppets. Not even going to mention any of the albums released since And Justice For All!

I think it's really difficult for me to distinguish between overrated records, and ones which I just really don't like. I think a lot of records immortalised and immersed in mystique when something huge happens, such as the death of a band member. Who knows what sort've impact the Nirvana, Joy Division and Buckley records would've had otherwise. Probably big, but not that big. This can also happen where a band, due to in fighting, disputes or whatever, implodes. Take The La's & The Stone Roses records for instance, cracking in their own right, but both shrouded in mystique after what subsequently went on. Then there's the so-called Top 100 albums, where yer Radiohead and Beatles records feature highly. A lot of the praise is probably just passed down by ambitious music journos trying to sound cool by name-dropping Revolver etc. I've never really got Radiohead, and I've never really got The Clash. I own 'London Calling' and a few others, and while it's good, I don't think it's great, but then that all just boils down to opinion. I think a more useful poll would be for underrated albums, of which I can think of heaps.

Nirvana - Nevermind

Don't get me wrong, it is a decent album but in my opinion In Utero was far better.

Never mind the bollocks - The sex pistols

I just don't get it. its just a load of over hyped crap. The sex pistols had no talent and about 2 decent songs. I think its a damn shame that this is classed as probably the best punk record of all time. The Damned, The Buzzcocks, The Clash, S.L.F and many others released far superior albums yet never got the same recognition as the pistols

Pink Floyd-Darkside of the moon

ok, at the time it was a work of songwriting and audio-engineering genius but apart from a few songs i was pretty disappointed. not as disappointed as i was when i found out it didn't go insync with the wizard of oz.

Black Sabbath-Paranoid

Paranoid and Fairies Wear Boots are awesome songs but apart from that, it's nothin special.

Masters of reality and sabbath bloody sabbath are much better.

Marliyn Manson-all of his albums.

you'll be surprised how far dodgy face paint, a codpiece and some bad 80's covers will get you.

Green Day - Dookie. It just doesn't do anything for me. At all. I only have it because it was 3.99 in One Up and I feel obliged to give any band a try if the cd is that cheap.

anything by coldplay/travis etc. A lot of british bands (especially ones which appeal to the US) seem to follow a formula with each song and it doesn't differ from band to band. And any decent songs that said band might have are played mercilously on repeat everywhere you go until you're sick of it.

i think a lot of albums are over rated.

i ahve to say an under rated band/album. Its the New Fast Automatic Daffodils. fookin quality. they had an album called "body exit mind". easily my favourite album of all time.

sorry to go off on a tangent.

bloody hell, someone else whose thinks 'body exit mind' is a work of genius! it would definately be in my top ten albums of all time! respect!

eh theres nothing overated about that album it is just pure funk all the way thru dont think theres a single bad song on it

Maybe that's why some folk think that it's over-rated.

Would agree with Sgt Pepper although the other Beatles albums mentioned merit the praise heaped on them by fans and critics alike.

Never Mind The Bollocks, yip and would throw in Definately Maybe. It maybe captured the moment and the imagination of a generation but the songs sound gash to me. Would also say The Bends and OK Computer but then I like Radioheads newer albums a lot better.

In Utero is the best Nirvana record, but I wouldn't say that Nevermind is overrated.

Discussing with workmates, we have come up with:

PJ Harvey ~ Stories by the city, stories by the sea

Oasis - definatley maybe

Beatles ~ Sgt. Pepper

Anything featuring Paul Weller

Phil Collins ~ No Jacket required

Marillion (all of it)

Fleetwood Mac ~ Rumours

The Eagles ~ Hotel California

The Smiths ~ The Queen is Dead

The Verve ~ Urban Hymns

Pink Floyd ~ The Wall

Wham! ~ The Final

Motley Crue ~ Shout at the Devil

Geen Day ~ Insomniac

Any Manics album that isn't the Holy Bible (anything after 1995 isn't worth bothering with)

Muse ~ Absolution

Def Leppard ~ Hysteria

Extreme ~ Pornograffiti

Bon Jovi ~ Slippery when Wet

Bryan Adams ~ Waking up the Neighbours

Aerosmith ~ Pump

Jet ~ Get Born

JJ72's second record

Keane ~ Hopes and Fears

Alanis Morrisette ~ Jagged Little Pill (see also: Acoustic)

the red hot chilli peppers - blood sugar sex magic

tish and fipsy, the best RHCP's lp by far.

I'd agree with a lot of posters here, "albums I don't like" are not the same as "overrated lp's"

I think you can only comment on an overrated lp if you like the band (?).

I'd have to wrack my brains for an overrated lp....

possibly :

four tet - everything ecstatic (I was sooo looking forward to this lp, and only a few blinding tracks on it, I got the feeling he was covering "old ground" ... it's a grower though...so I might still change my mind about this one)

I don't know...

it's a fine line between liking something, but being dissapointed with it, for it to be an "overrated" lp...blah blah blah

I get what you're saying & generally agree with you, as per usual.

But surely it can only be overrated if it is highly regarded by critics already?

"Everything Ecstatic" got good reviews but they were hardly gushing or praising it to high heavens. I'd say most people are agreement with you - it was disappointing.

An "overrated" album is one that continually appears in "Top 100 Greatest Albums Since The Stone Age" list or something similar. A few of the albums been mentioned here seem to be down to personal taste (ie, dislike of the artist) rather than starting a backlash in reponse to reviews or generally held opinion (eg - Marillion - who the f*ck rates any work by them as a "great album" anyway?).

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, there are a few albums that are regarded as "sacred cows" (astral weeks, revolver, blonde on blonde) or as great within their genre (loveless, it takes a nation of millions to hold us back) - surely these are the sort of albums that we should be discussing & dissecting rather than Aerosmith's "Pump"?
