  1. "Like A Movie" is one of my favourite pop punk songs. The problem with Midtown is that they had a massive fall out with Drive-Thru shortly after Drive-Thru sold their souls to Geffen. The bitter Richard and Stefanie Reines did their utmost to damage the credibility of Midtown after that. Fall Out Boy "Take This To Your Grave/From Under the Cork Tree" era had the gimmick of shouty bits in their songs which Midtown did not. FOB were a pop punk band who were deliberately marketed to emo kids, whereas only a year or two before that Finch were still being marketed by Drive-Thru as "a dark pop punk band". Fashions change.
  2. What shows you putting on?
  3. Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to my initial post in a positive manner. Imagine that your partner or significant other approaches you and says, "Look honey, I've been feeling unhappy about this relationship for quite some time now. Things aren't as good as they used to be. I don't know what happened or how we lost it, but this... this isn't working for me." What would be your reaction be? Would you want to discuss why they were feeling that way? Would you want to make things better? Perhaps your response would simply be, "Darling, I think it's time you took off your rose-tinted nostlagia specs." You might add, "Don't feel bad. There's lots of wonderful relationships out there, but you're just too old to experience that sort of thing." You can't change people's feelings by belittling them and telling them they're stupid. All you're doing is making them feel more disillusioned. If nothing else, a scene is simply a relationship between its members. We can't rewind the scene 8 years. I do think everyone understands that. But we can think about why the sense of community (for many people) is gone. I'd like to thank Flash for his awesome contribution in summing up the situation on the ground. In terms of aberdeen-music I do hear a lot of people from both camps (it's poorer/it's not changed) saying they don't know what is going on in general. You would have thought the clue was in the name of the website. That leads me to believe that: 1. The scene really isn't as good as it used to be. 2. There may still be elements of the scene that are good or vibrant, but for whatever reason they don't come here. Both scenarios lead to the question: Why? A new band (of young/inexperienced members) is just starting out. Would you recommend they came here as a good way of promoting themselves? Would you recommend they stuck around? A new band (with experienced members) is starting out. Why should they come here? You're a promoter. What importance do you place in using aberdeen-music to promote your gigs? Back in the old days of aberdeen-music I remember when anyone used to offer any criticism of a band or a music project the responses used to get really tetchy really fast. "Why you criticising my band/drummer/vocalist when yours is shit?" Cue 20 page flame war. In the intervening years we've all since learned (for the most part) how to behave and to take personal criticism on board. But it's ironic that although we can take criticism of our own individual projects (to help you get better) we are still unable to do so for the scene in general.
  4. At its heart this thread had a good point, but the status quo non-contributors shouted it down without much thought or true consideration. The simple fact is that most people on this website don't really care about local bands. People who are serious about promoting their music go elsewhere, or at the very least, don't spend too much time here.
  5. A cracking/funny video. Sandwich eating guy is awesome.
  6. For the most part this is good. Nice guitar work, pleasant sound overall. Although you both seem able to sing on your own the two vocals at the same time aren't working. It sounds like you're attempting harmonies, which you sometimes achieve, but then you drift into unison and start to put each other out of tune and it falls apart a bit. With the style you're playing you can afford to be a little looser in terms of your vocal timing but you still need to get it a fair bit tighter than it is now.
  7. Started off well, got a bit bogged down in the middle... but the final pay-off was good.
  8. This is what REAL drumming looks like.
  9. Think it's been a while since we've had a thread like this. Who should I check out?
  10. How many years ago was that?
  11. What a strange little racist. Hates the 'Zionist threat', loves Iran (who should have nuclear weapons), 'enjoyed' Mein Kampf.... sounds English but has a Lion Rampant on his youtube page.
  12. Just park in the street and pay some local youths a bottle of buckie to watch it for you
  13. That explains your time-keeping then.
  14. The longer a drum solo goes on the less I understand what it is I'm supposed to be listening to.
  15. I like your sound, and the melody is quite strong, but it feels a little lacking in energy and commitment, like you're giving it about 75%. Perhaps if the song was recorded a fraction faster and the vocals had more guts in the 'hey' bit.
  16. I think they're all good. I like avant-garde projects.
  17. The whole point of that stupid device is that it mimics whoever it is impersonating.
  18. I once got a kiss from Clare Grogan. She's a fine lassie.
  19. I'm not a big fan of Moore, but I don't understand the argument that if you live in a capitalist country and are financially successful you have no right to criticise the system. "I'm alright Jack, therefore the system is perfect."
  20. I think that's fair. There were a few episodes I found so bad I almost gave up entirely. The Mark Gatiss effort with the creatures in the boy's dollhouse was a stinker - as was the one in the Hotel with the Minotaur. I'm sick of seeing puppets and ventriloquist dummies on DW. The Cyberman episode wasn't exciting in any way. The idea of turning James Corden into the Cyber leader was fuckin pish and that mouse thing was ridiculous. The robot with the little people inside sounds like an idea The Beano would have come up with, and The Girl Who Waited would have been good but the way the white robots walked about looked really bloody daft. There should be someone in "quality control" who just says "Nah, that looks shit mate" and they sort those kinds of things out. Despite all this the last episode was good and the Doctor's Wife was a good 'een. Anyway, I live in hope that The Doctor's return to the shadows will bring a different tone to the storytelling.
  21. I could watch that right now. Sure, Back To The Future has to be on there. Blade Runner too. Where Eagles Dare. The Searchers. Zulu. Star Wars. I find there's films that you've maybe seen a bunch of times already but if they're on TV you end up watching them again almost by accident. Unforgiven is the prime example for me.
  22. Right... last episode tonight? How have you found this series? Pretty poor I think.
