  1. Electric AND acoustic?
  2. A lot of musicians suffer from this 'sounds like something else' problem. Here's how to sort it. If you begin to feel that something you're writing sounds a bit too much like some other song, you should record it - using a dictaphone or the mic function on your mobile - and forget about it for the time being. Later, when you're struggling for an idea, just return to the old recordings you have for inspiration. Unless what you've got really is a complete rip-off, it's highly unlikely that you'll even remember what song it was supposed to sound like in the first place. That leaves you free to re-enter the creative process, unencumbered by the, 'sounds like another song,' paranoia. If you want to experiment with melodies and chord structure, try taking a well-worn song and changing a few notes. Make your melody go down when the song melody goes up, and your melody go up when the song you're copying goes down. Now change the rhythm and the instrumentation. Choose different voicings of the same chords. Try replacing one chord with another. Very quickly you will have something which sounds nothing like the original song. It might not be a great song in itself, but it's a good exercise. One or two small changes can make a big difference musically.

  4. Ally, I'm not sure where you're coming from pal. Are you aiming to do stuff for yourself or are you looking to set yourself up as an agent? At the end of the day playing covers can be great fun and is a perfectly valid form of musical expression.
  5. Oh yeah, but that's only the start of the story. Lucky Rathen knows the end: it involves a third girl upstairs and how I stirred her two shots of flavoured vodka.
  6. I never remember how I met people or if I've even met them.
  7. 1st of April. Oh yes, this shall be watched. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOzXsqoJhtE

  9. Can you remove my signature? I'm getting a bit bored looking at it. Cheers.
  10. I was wondering why I couldn't change my signature. This change is disappointing, especially since I previously explained why everyone should have a signature and the mod team seemingly agreed with this only to change their minds again at a later date.
  11. I like the tune and arrangement a lot but I'm not 100% sure about the vocal mix. Still... there's a lot of awesomely fun stuff in there. Well done.
  12. Without any irony I genuinely like some of the songs suggested so far.... Now THESE... these make me laugh... Coal Chamber, Machine Head, Type O Negative. Anyone got an old Drilling the Vein video collection and a VHS to play it on? That reminds me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8-J4hL7iDM
  13. Don't like her voice that much. Don't like her face. Hate the contrived image and the retro associations picked all too perfectly. The Video Games tune isn't too tragic though. Love the fact that the 'authentic' fetishists and muso wankers have had a nice big smack in the puss over the whole thing. So on the whole she's a force for good.
  14. This calls for a pint at the Mains.
  15. Don't worry Little Green, Jake has a shoe addiction too (sniffing them)
  16. These accusations you're defending yourself from are news to me. I don't even know what band you're in. I presume this statement about you representing all bands in the North-East is simply a deceleration of your impartiality. Otherwise it sounds a bit odd. Did you discuss all this with the guys who run ab-music? (Whoever that is, I'm not entirely sure. Who is 'the boss'?) I think you should take a deep breath, chill out, have a wee think about things, re-open a dialogue and start afresh. It would be nice if ab-music could harness this sort of enthusiasm, and as a community start to feel the same way about itself as you do.
  17. I see your point, although I don't object to this thread as a means of promoting ab-bands. The complaint would be more about the slightly lazy, verging into off-topic intrusions into other threads. See Moshulu/ice cream for quo threads.
  18. Change the forum descriptions to something a bit less wordy. The existing descriptions sound as though they should be read in a mid-atlantic radio voice of the sort you used to find on Northsound adverts. eg. Gigs and Events Announcements is currently described this way: The forum for announcements and discussion regarding past and upcoming gigs, workshops and other events related to the local music scene. Why not just say?: Promote your local gigs, workshops and events here. Networking is described like this: Are you a band looking for a gig or offering a gig swap? Are you a promoter looking for bands to book? Then make the connection in this forum. Why not just say?: Organise gig swaps; make connections with promoters and bands.
  19. Instead of separating threads into 'music discussion' and 'feedback' forums split them by interest/location instead. Have an aberdeen music discussion forum (all discussion and feedback relating to the local music scene in one forum) Make Musicians' Corner (change name of this forum to something a bit more descriptive) Networking News & Announcements Trading Post as sub forums of the main local music forum. This creates a local music 'hub'. Archive/close/delete the generally unused local band forums which (to an outside observer) make the scene look dead. Have a more general music discussion forum for music discussion not related to the music scene. (Favourite albums, Pop Music, new Green Day single etc etc... mildly off-topic music stuff)
  20. At one point Lucky Rathen lived in the BOD. True story.
