  1. Any chance of Shawshank redemption? Not a very hardcore film but would be funny (in a sad way) to see folks crying in the bar (i know I would....I never got to experience it in the cinema, only on the small TV at home)
  2. I don't think you have to be 18 to play Moorings.....but band members under 18 become a real drag when you play out of town...even some venues aren't so lenient (we have it really easy here, believe me!!!) I'd aim at getting a drummer who, even if not 18, certainly looks and acts it (ie. drinks it down like the best of them!) You don't want to work your way down to Glasgow to be told you drummer can't play. Heh, it didn't even do the Beatles any favours with poor old George!
  3. Run it through a sequncer for me and give the resulting MIDI track....then I'll learn it and tell you what its like....afraid I just don't care for 'scores'... Boys and footballs and shit...I knew it once upon a time but its long lost on me now
  4. Jose Gonzalez ain't it? I ain't too much of a fan of him (due to far too much radio play) but he does know a good mellow tune that is great on the ears when he finds it....folk like james Blunt put me off this style 100%...but its nothing like that thankfully...wish I caught him in ABZ now... "lovestain" is cracking tune.....
  5. Check out the EMU0404 sound card....and look into the software Cubase SX for recording, and either IK Multimedia Amplitube. Native Instruments Guitair Rig, or Native Instruments Guitar Rig Combos for inserting on your input channel for recording guitar straight in. There are other guitar amp simulator softwares, but I find amplitube (especially) to be the best of a bad bunch. If you run your guitar into a Marshall MS2 at the same time you can simulate some sustain which will make its way into the recording if you crank it up (its only a 1W amp and is worth every penny!!!). Theres the WAVES GTR software (and hardware) which apart from the tuner (which is a nice on screen version of the Korg tuner) really doesn't excite me. Amplitube cuts it every time, if you're not happy with the sound after you have recorded it, a bit of EQ and compression (look into either WAVES of Bluetubes if you are using Cubase) really brings it up. If you are using Pro Tools (perhaps you have gone for the Pro Tools digibox or the digi 002) the Line 6 "amp farm" software is the one to go for, and is the product that made Line 6 the compant they are! (even before the Pod's became widespread) Stick with easy stuff and get an ASIO compatible sound card, CUbase SX (a lite version comes free with the EMU0404 as well as a free lite version of Amplitube!!) For drums learn about the Cubase Drum Map and MIDI programming, then into either Cubase's LM7 drum machine (pants) or Native Instruments Battery, BFD's various samples/sample libraries or Reason Drum kits etc......there are a load of great ways to get great drum sounds without needing a real drum kit, just a MIDI keyboard (or patience and the Cubase Drum Editor) can get you great results. Drop me a PM if you want more thorough help...but I hope this is a help and sparks some brain waves amongst people...really...you DON'T need to be spenindg £100's at Capt Toms for a shitty demo when you can do a reasonable demo on the cheap at home, and add to it to your hearts content and add more and more and more in your own time for a very small investment!!! More than nothing, learnh how to play your guitar well. When you are recording into digital...the sound going in is the sound recorded like it or lump it. (what I'm meaning is there is virtually NO character to hide behind....digital is very clean so mistakes, crap sound, bum notes, whatever, and always WAY too prominent) .if you hate the performace then you will hate the performance after its 99th spin and almost final mix.....recording things right to start with is half the battle as it saves the work at midown. Has anyone here ever really been happy with the raw sound on the multitrack at captain toms before a mix down? If it sounds crap then, no amount of tweaking an effects can fix it...seriously...get it soudning right when you record....or scrap the project and tell them it isn't working!!!! There is no "Fix in the mix"...you can try , but you can always tell a recording which doesn't sound like an original and it just lacks groove and flow and kills the sound...... Yadda yadda......keep on pluging anyway....PM me even if you don't want to pay for software....I WILL NOT tell you how to get it for free but advise you work arounds nudge nudge wink wink
  6. For me its a bit like a bike, my feet can't sit totally vertical (or horizontal, I'm forgetting) so they are at almost 45 degree position on my pedal (resting) and I'm pushing my toes down and really smacking the drum head when I do this....same with hi hat pedal....if your legs come up too far past your waist you're doing something wrong...if you are stretching too far... you are doing something wrong. Get it where you can give the kick drum the loudest hit EVER! and you are the right spot. You're probably never going to need to hit it that hard, but if you do., its going to be easy and comfortable. I always hold the beaters againts the skin between kicks, so I know I am getting the full impact each hit. Get a good springy pedal too. I love the Tama Iron Cobra's...espeicaly the flexi guide (material strap) as they are quickas fuck and can be as strong as you are....the double beats are sweet as and when performed with one foot will leave you audience in disbelief that you never had a double pedal!!!!! Its all in the toes anyway......your shoes will make all the difference too. Converse all stars work for me....but I know some folk who need Doctor Martens before they can feel comfortable with the smack they're giving the drum skin. Theres is too much of course, and this can be it (DM's)...although for recording....if you are gating the kick...this is perfect as the kick will be so loud that you will know when there is no kick so you can just scrub the track up to the big transient points on the kick track!
  7. Check out Reason.....I can use it live (in a primitive way!!) and can get a lot more done without reading a manual than with live. I had a tutorial DVD for live but it doesn't seem very interesting. Reason on the other hand can do a multiude of things. ie. I recent transferred a lot of old 8 track recodings to WAV and am mixing them in Reason in a totally linear way.....its impossible to do bars and beat editing but it makes life very much like working with a real rack of gear (like I'm used to) so is very exciting....load your eight tracks into NNXT samples and set up a Matrix player to play a constant C3 note and split it with the CV splitter into all the different NNXT samplers and get into it!!!! Its like owning the best analogue while still having the slight convenience. Plus..if you did everything to a click and lock it all in time, you can easliy add MIDI.... The only problem is having no Gate....but you can process a Gate offline to your WAV files...cool as fuck though..I'll post up some samples soon
  8. I knew a great website which let you realise, once your limit on a CC has passed a certain threshold, at the minimum payment per month, even when you die you wouldn't have paid it off. Fuck that moneysavingexpert website its full of shit.... www.fool.co.uk is where you can really learn about finances. More depressing is the amount of people you can read about who are writing off 50k+ worth of debt every day then starting all over again!!!!! Forget a Credit card seriously.....
  9. Ugly people fingering each other outside of Drummonds on a Sunday night.....if you were on one of them, please post here...We could all use a good laugh
  10. While I detest violence and negative feelings, I think the best thing that can happen is if the local roadcrew kick a bit of sense into him and he decides whether he should carry on or not...hopefully not. Babyshambles/Libertines/whatever I feel are nothing special...and his Sid Vicious persona which he wishes to play up to is so dated and meaningless that no one should give him the time of day. He is obviously loving all the gutterpress attention. Personally I feel skin cancer from the non - existent sun in Aberdeen is more of a threat than him and his bunch of cronies, and would make a far more interesting read in the papers...it's underminimig everyone who has ever tried to speak out against "the establishment" and it makes such a mockery of it that the middle class (the people who really need to learn the way that things are) will always associate "anti establishment" as "attention seeking media whore" and nothing will be accomplished...theres a reason punk had such an impact it did when it first came about.....Sid vicious wasn't dating a supermodel, people in the public eye were realtively clean cut (even Gary Glitter) and daring to say anything which lead public opinion against the status quo was almost an arrestible offence. Pete isn't even detained longer than a few hours before he's back on the street comitting oh so shocking offences....(seriously..drugs...wow....) As I say...while I absolutely detest violence (it makes me ill) it would be great to read that the boys in Aberdeen said a big fuck you to his entourage and taught him the way it is......if he continued on all power to him, he clearly is a junkie who no one should give two fucks about (You wouldn't pay £10 to go watch the junkie bastards who broke into your home and stole your hi fi would you!!!!) and if he isn't, he'll go crying home, and some other local talent can get up front and show everyone how its done.....track marks and yellow skin don't equal song writing genius..... Posted under the influence of too much alcohol
  11. Of course the quote above is a total piss take....lightning bolt a prog band? o_O
  12. If you want a good deal on a mortgage APR rate, you need a 15% deposit...thats the magic figure, so I'm told. 15% of 80k(avg price) = too much for anyone...
  13. Where the hell did you read in this that they will be for gigs, or will even definitely be going up? (as you have stated!!!) Local interest only = monster trucks and the circuis....
  14. London doesn't sleep till about 8am so just find an all night cafe and catch some kip on the way back up to Aberdeen. Cheapest / Safest option!
  15. Anyone who went to this show insulted their own intelligence.
  16. That's a Bee Gee's song...not Take That.
  17. Pretty 'effin fantastic! It's just a shame that this sorta sound is everywhere now, as the needles have been doing it forever....they need a good track to cut through and claim their much deserved glory...this maybe isn't the track but its a step in the right direction!
