  1. Yes, there is a lot of doubt. The healthy-eating issue is often clouded by a whole lot of self & commercial interest, politics, food-faddery, misinformation & public health policy in this country is still often underlined by an attitude of patronising contempt for "the public" If you want an example of what can be done tho, look at Finland, where 25+ years of intervention to change a diet & health record that was initially worse than Scotland's has paid-off big-time. Much of it was done via a subsidy/tax regieme, making less-healthy foods much dearer than the alternative & a great deal of that went into making a good range of fresh produce available to remote communities. All-in, it took the sort of state intervention that goes down like a lead baloon in this country. The alcohol restrictions - including no going between pubs & State Alcohol Shops (like sex-shops here) were a bugger tho.
  2. There are a whole lot of other factors that have bearing on the development of type-2. Some are genetic whilst the mechanism for others is barely understood yet. Whilst diet & activity are certainly important factors' date=' in both development, avoidance [b']& control, blaming obesity/inactivity in the way they currently do is a gross oversimplification & is also highly unfair on those who developed it by other means.
  3. Oh yes! Pubs/other licenced places are on a bit of a knife-edge as far as unescorted underagers are concerned & the new licencing laws redefined the responsabilities of licencees & made them liable if anyone over 18 other than a parent bought or or even allowed an underager to consume alcohol. I can cee their concerns, especially if a large mixed-age group gathers. All it could need is one person to take the piss & they could be in pretty deep shit. I think I read something about spot-checks on pub underagers being stepped-up recently? Also, admission of people between 14 or 18 has always been entirely at the licencee's discretion so maybe it will change a bit once whatever concerns have passed.
  4. My experience of christian evangelicals of all sorts is that you can barely get a cigarrette paper between them' date=' especially when it comes to a basic level contempt/disrespect for those who don't share their particualr belief. I'm not attacking his beliefs. Indeed, I fully respect his need to believe whatever [b']he wants. I only take issue with his evangelism. Plenty of occasions - generally declaring takes some sort of superior, judgemental or assumptive form & often attempts to judge the subject by some inapplicable yardstick or tries implicate the declared-against in some sort of evil, unchristian or immoral act/viewpoint when there is often no justification/disagreement whatsoever. IME it is usually a prelude to an attempt to utterly quash any difference of opinion or to railroad "the only true way! I'd suggest that is fundamental intolerance?
  5. I'm normally extremely tolerant but the act of "declaration" itself' date=' is imo an aggressive religious gesture & well into the territory of those who might try & force their belief systems on others. So no, I'll stick to my beliefs & wish you well with yours. I agree, most folk just think you to be misguided overenthusastic fools. However, after several years schooling & various later experiences at the hands of a succession of prize bigots & fundy-fuckwits, I'd tend to make an exception to my usual tolerance for your particular breed of cuntishness. Pass the petrol please!
  6. I didn't see this particular programme but I'm concerned that this is only another bit of sticking-plaster on a more serious issue & frankly, school dinners are only a smallish part of the problem. The whole issue of childrens lifestyle needs to be addressed & no amount of healthy food at school can counter a poor diet & lack of appropriate activtiy both in school & at home. Also, the whole concept of "public health" in this country is a well & truly screwed-up by post-war "cheap food at any cost" policies, consessions to major commercial interests & some pretty barking ideas more motivated by politics/social control than any genuine concern with health. Frankly, education authorities are the last people I'd be willing to trust with a child's health & I'm concerned that this may become another attack on parental rights in general. That Rotheram article above has bugger-all to do with healthy eating BTW & is a near textbook example of what happens when the press put their own agendas first. The mothers were actually protesting the school's move to a much shorter lunchbreak - despite being quite unable to cater for a lot of kids in the 40mins allowed. Many pupils were getting no food at all!
  7. Remember, the smell seems less to you when you are smoking but to everyone else around you, the guy with the "stealth" joint tends to stick-out like a sore thumb. Marsh - you forgot about lock-ins! Nice to know what the boat is about, I saw it last night too.
  8. They are the lot who believe we're all infested with the roaming souls of dead space aliens. Also a exploitative' date=' money-grubbing bunch of thieving, ambulance-chasing, absolute c***s. [url']http://www.xenu.net/
  9. How can anything involving that talking plank Owen be described as "promising"?
  10. For me, it is rough-cut Burley tobacco, rolled in an old-style blind rolling box. The sort of thing folk used in the days when industrial fags were an expensive luxury. For machine fags, I'll tend to get Dunhill Bensons or order a carton from abroad for nights-out, driving or bike trips.
  11. "Happy" songs generally have the effect of making me want to fire-up the chainsaw, or better still a flamethrower.
  12. Yes, I think you do. Although if they sent a cheque, you can insist on some very specific conditions for them collecting it. If they don't comply, it is yours to keep but only at the same time as the bank become no longer required to honour it. Also, it is highly unlikley that a firm will start recovery action/bring-in the debt collectors for a £30 refund. Personally, I'd just shove it in the post back to them.

  14. Well, yet another one who had a good time here. Just back, after a bit of R&R in the wilds of Assynt & I too have a Drive by Arguement tale - I knew I'd heard the name somewhere. The must be a busy bunch!
  15. http://www.jefitoblog.com/blog/ Has a recent "introduction to Journey" with a selection of tracks from each album throughout their career. As well as a live concert recording. Plus a load of Bruce Springsteen if that floats your boat. They tend not to stay-up very long, but should be there for a few more days.
  16. Don't statr me on those particular guys! Old wounds I'm afraid. Still, my first two sets of TITP tickets were free. Nowadays, I & quite a few friends of the time, wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire, unless of course we could piss petrol!
  17. Sadly, he is deadly serious & yes, he had a high level of education. The end of which marked the point where he began to go off the rails. He is very easy to meet - Often has his trolley-board outside the Schoolhill war Memorial or around the Wallace Statue.
