  1. The band I listen to the most is Dream Theater so needless to say I get bored listening to music with average/poor playing in it. However I agree that you could be a god at your instrument but can't write a song to save yourself ... I have met such people. So obviously having an amazing ear for music is better than raw ability ... it's all about knowing where to draw the line and of course, how to cross it without ruining the song
  2. Now that's poor ... I work 9 to 5 and I make time for the band cos it's obviously far better and would ditch the job without hesitation for the band if I had to. Tell them to get their priorities right
  3. I'm going to say that people don't come to gigs because there isn't anyone to come to the gigs. Aberdeen is home to how many people who would come to gigs? Not many I dare say ... nothing compared to somewhere like Glasgow. The city centre is so underpopulated with gig goers that even the little farming/commuting towns (I live in one so I'm not having a dig) outside of Aberdeen have their own music scene. Anyway, of Aberdeen cities population, who is going to go to more than 2 gigs a week, which I would consider to be pretty hardcore? So obviously there are going to be quiet nights.
  4. Well they weren't open today and there was heaps of mail lying at the door so it looked like it hadn't been open in a while. Instead I went up to Bruce Millers and discovered that they're not that bad afterall. Their drum's are very well priced ... will probably be looking to get my next kit from there albeit that will be in a couple of years cause I want a Starclassic Maple and a rather large one at that Cymbals may very well be quite pricy but I haven't enquired about them yet as I shop in Glasgow for cymbals. Sound Control are seriously cheap for cymbals but not very good unless you know what you want or you've tried them elsewhere as they have almost no stock. Check their website if you want to see what cymbals should cost
  5. I get a feeling that the first album I actually went out and bought was the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californication. First album I owned though was Queen Greatest Hits ... classic
  6. Once upon a time, I was very serious about being a pilot but my eyesight isn't the best so that went out the window. I went to uni for the same reason that most people do ... cause I was expected to and so that I could leave home and get wasted every night ... not always a good idea to continue it on into and all the way through final year however but hey I enjoyed it. I did the subject I did (Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics) out of interest in the subject (planes) but I didn't really do any work (see bit about getting wasted). Uni is good for what you experience. I took up drums at uni and as it happens, that's what I decided to do with my life so I guess I did get something out of it in the end. Getting a job after it was a nightmare though simply because everyone goes to uni and when you come out with a 3rd, you're not particularily sought after. Didn't really know what I wanted to do either which didn't help but I got something in the end (degree related amazingly) which pays the bills and will let me expand my drum kit as far as I can reach
  7. I'm afraid I'm really going to have to agree with this option
  8. Not one good band playing ... what is the world coming to?
  9. I haven't heard them (or at least not to my knowledge) and I must admit that I don't think I want to. The name does seem to say it all. I used to watch the music channels but I stopped cause they just play the same songs in repeat every 45 minutes or something and there's never anything good on them.
  10. Slipknot has lead and rhythm drums ... sort of
  11. Say NO to valentines day ... Am I right in saying it has a higher suicide rate than any other day of the year?
  12. It's a piece of fookin nonsense!! I was devastated the other day when I typed in for mxtabs.net and it took me to some review website. The world is such a stupid shitty place right now ... to quote some Tool (from an "illegal(?)" site ) "Mom please flush it all away". I taught myself to play drums using mxtabs and without it, I would have got nowhere. It's all money money money. I can't even see what their problem is with tabs. I mean fair enough if sheet music exists for it then I can see why it might be an infrigement of copyright but for 99% of the music on these tab websites, there is no bloody sheet music. I would love to get into a heated (with fists) discussion with the git in that article who talks about jail time ... asshole
  13. I don't hate the woman ... I pity the fool!
  14. The only rule you need for Pop Punk is don't play it ... or at least not in public
  15. Also a good idea is to pick something you know about ... something that annoys you or whatever. If you get even the slightest idea, consider writting it down, even if it's just a single line as, if nothing else, it may even help you to establish how you want the vocals to go i.e. how your going to sing them. The one thing that I cannot stress enough though ... even if you think the lyrics you have written are absolutely gash, have someone take a look at them. When you read your own lyrics they can seem really cheesy but others will almost always think very differently. It might also be worth mentioning that you can always change any lyrics you do write, even if you've been playing the song live for several months as I have seen done. Hope this helps ...
  16. I hope they are planning on putting FOM on late cos we do want to actually play a few songs like. We're getting a bit fed up of 20 minute sets as we can only just fit in 4 songs at a push ... generally from the sound engineer who is looking at his/her watch by this point. Am just listening to My Minds Weapon right now ... sounds pretty good but a complete polar opposite from FOM which should prove to be quite interesting.
  17. I graduated without knowing how it worked
  18. My first set of cymbals were ZBT's ... cheap and cheerfull but I grew to hate them pretty quickly as they do sound a bit gash. The hi-hats were paper thin and the ride had really nasty overtones As far as I'm aware, there are a few Z_T's and the basic ZBT is the entry level range. Have a look at ZXT's and stuff as well if these are not to be ur first cymbals. When I started out a few years ago it was only the ZBT's and the ZBT pro's and then u were up to A Zildjian's which was quite a price leap. I have since moved over to Sabian AAX's as they are cheaper (especially in Glasgow ) and, in my opinion, sound better than their Zildjian counterparts (a sort of mix between A custom's and K custom's) so I can recommend giving Sabian a look into as well ... I think it would be the B8 and B8 pro series that are the ZBT and ZBT Pro equivalents. XS20's are cast cymbals (as opposed to sheet) but nice and cheap. From there it is up to the Pro Sonix. Check out http://www.sabian.com to have a listen to them on line.
  19. I dare say that if an ice pick can't get through it, neither can bullets. Does look ace. Very Half Life esque with the ability of the suit to inject you with stuff. The skeletal design thingy that allows you to carry 3 times your own body weight and not notice is very cool as well. Wonder what it would take to blast through it if it really is as tough as they say it is ... Plasma Rifle anyone?
  20. I don't really know any Aberdeen bands that aren't on it ... here's a few worth checking out ... http://www.myspace.com/paritysfall http://www.myspace.com/reasonsarered http://www.myspace.com/theeupstarts
