  1. if you just have a normal desktop PC, then you most likely have an average soundcard, without any special capabilities. To get quotes from movies, you may find it easier to trawl the web for samples - for most films, the best quotes have already been sampled and exist somewhere or other. google is handy for finding them. however, if you can't find the quote you are looking for, you may have to do it yourself. this may be tricky, depending on what kind of soundcard you have. if the film is on a dvd, then you can rip the audio file from it, and use something like SoundForge or Audition (ne CoolEdit) to copy the sample you want. may help if you give some examples of what you are trying to do. as for your mastering question, do you really mean mastering, or are you talking about recording? if mastering is what you are after, here's an interesting article (though not strictly about mastering, it may be useful for what you may wish to do): http://jamin.sourceforge.net/Loudness/loudness.html hope that helps.
  2. i don't think they started doing USB until pentium 2 chipsets came about. not sure really. i'm pretty certain that laptop won't have USB on it though.
  3. yeah i thought that too, but i think lester burnham was specifically answering demon cleaner's point, about doing bad things to one's body.
  4. how much would you accept for the digitech and boss respectively?
  5. yeah i was at that gig. quite enjoyed their set, would probably see them again. it wasn't that busy i don't think. can't remember who any of the other bands were. the frontman was pretty good. the guy who sang for Gun isn't in El Presidente, in case you were wondering.
  6. i'd go see them for sure. on the turn is an amazing album.
  7. not sure where in aberdeen you'd get, but i'd be interested to find out if you find a shop that sells. Sound Control in Dundee may be your closest bet. Though from a quick look at their site, I don't think they have any by the brands you are looking for. http://www.soundcontrol.co.uk
  8. You might want to look out for issues regarding the Data Protection Act, not to mention copyright law. It is arguable (i'm not joking) that the live recording can be attributed as "identifiable data", that is, data that can be used to identify a data subject (e.g. vocal tracks). In such a case, if you intend to record a live performance, then I think two things are requisite by law: 1. You must be registered as a Data Controller with the Data Commissioner. 2. Data subjects have a legal right to obtain all personal data held by you, the controller on them, the data subject. The maximum amount you can charge for a request for personal data by a data subject is 10 I think. A further legal problem is one with copyright. If a band plays a cover in their live performance, then there may be some legal issue with recording it. I'm not quite sure about exactly what it contravenes in terms of copyright, but I know that around 7 or 8 years ago when the Pelican were putting on live bands, they stipulated that you absolutely must not play covers in your set, if you wanted the set recorded. Obviously, this would only apply if a performance has actually been recorded. However, by ultimately restricting rights to recorded material (or if both the recording is deemed as identifiable personal data, and you are not registered as a data controller), you may be breaking the law. You'd obviously want to check all this out with some legalese person. Here's some information on the Data Protection Act 1998 (can't remember if it's been updated since then): http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts1998/19980029.htm
  9. wow, that looks like a great desk - i feel silly for paying 60 quid for a folio notepad now! does it all work ok? looks like it does groups as well! very handy. as for a vocal microphone, keep an eye out on ebay, and don't be bothered about losing lots of auctions. i would choose about 3 or 4 microphones that you are interested in, and just keep scouring. i'd say if the mic is not new and goes for anymore than about 70% of what it costs to buy it online, it's not worth winning. about six months ago i got a neumann tlm-103 for a very fair price and it was in excellent condition. akg 4000b and rode nt1000 are often popular choices, though i've never heard them myself. it's worth spending a bit more for your vocal mic; i wouldn't have said it would add that much as an overhead kit muc that you couldn't do with a dynamic and some e.q. However, vocals are your stand out instrument in a track, and the difference in quality of the mics used should have a noticeable difference.
  10. malt mill does a good one, and drakes and drummonds are both quite good too, but i think the best aberdeen guinness comes from ma cameron's
  11. Maybe it's too dark in there. Just kidding, I'm all for a smoking ban in public places too. Smoke yourself to death at home if you like though!
  12. i don't even know what this, though i know who all of the collaborators are. what kind of music is this?
  13. I am, I am. Ideally just some nice reverbs and multi-tap delays. something like the alesis midiverb 4 would be nice. has anybody got any not in use anymore that they'd want to part with? do CLS have rack kit for sale? i know they sell some mics and stuff... anywhere else in aberdeen selling such kit second hand? thanks.
  14. I never said it was new. Lots of people have heard the legend, but not seen the actual video, which is on that site.

  16. more pressing and important may be who the british will vote in as government in 2005. if bush wins, do we really want a labour government that is going to repeat the last 4 years of being led up the garden path by the US in terms of foreign policy and diplomacy? i can see liberal democrats taking a much bigger share next year than ever before. it may be a case of saving ourselves if america can't do it for themselves.
